Undercover Brother ... but good 0

I enjoyed this 'graphic mystery' written by Mat Johnson and drawn by Warren Pleece (I recall him doing some stuff in one of the early Lucifer trades). Things have very obviously changed in America over the last few decades, but it'd be foolish to think that race has been completely eradicated as an issue in the deep south -- having grown up in the Carolinas, that's party why Incognegro resonates so deeply with me. The book explores well what it means to be the 'invisible minority,' the perfect t...

(DEUS EX MACHINA)^2, Yet Still Overjoyed 1

I'm still absolutely gutted that Marvel is axing this title -- maybe I should be miffed at all you bastards for not buying it along with me? Anyways. Paul Cornell and m'boy Kirk are going out with a bang, as #14 and the Annual that preceded it were two of the strongest installments of the series thus far. I mean, last issue, everyone died. Cap was exiled, Blade was wandering the hinterlands. Dracula slaughtered parliament. Yet, the "twist" was so undetectable, that when it happens, and you're wa...

Judd Winnick :( 1

This was really, really bad. DC had just spent the last three months spoon-feeding us the Battle for the Cowl story-arc (which was okay, mind you  -- Judd Winnick with this issue proving just how awful Tony Daniel's series could have been had he written it). Really, for three months we were immersed with Dick Grayson's decision to take up the mantle of the Bat, something that by the Secret Six tie-in was clearly inevitable.Who retcons innocuous details from last month's story? Judd Winnick. Who ...

Gorgeous stuff (Or, how I started to love comics once again) 0

My first issue of anything that my Mom picked up for me one day at the local shop in our Charlotte, NC suburb was Batman #497, the "Breaking of the Bat" Knightfall issue. I remember the guy at the counter saying "Bruce Wayne is done, kid -- Azrael is Batman now." That was my introduction to the world of mainstream comics in the 90s. This issue and the Animated Series were my introduction to comics in the 90s, but for some reason I ended up a Marvel kid -- rabidly following Onslaught, the Spider-...

Az: Year One 0

A great annual from possibly my favorite series, following the events leading up to the first Batman: Sword of Azrael issue. The story focuses on the Azreal Ludovic Valley, father to his successor Azrael Jean-Paul, painting him in a new light, as a character machinated by the Order of St. Dumas, one prone to frightening delusions and hallucinations out of the cult's indoctrination. Denny O'Neil changes how we are to view Ludovic's visit to J-P's apartment the night the former died -- instead of ...
