Top ten movies of 2015

I haven't even see 10 movies from the 50's so here's a much easier blog to write.

10. Cobain: Montage of Heck

No Caption Provided

Kurt's story told in a unique manner, one he would have surely preferred over the more frequent sensationalist films and books that have come out since his death. Up close and personal, you get a feeling of who he really was and not just what he did.

Best part: The art/animation sequences

9. Avengers: Age of Ultron

No Caption Provided

Yes, yes, okay whatever, I liked it you don't have to agree.

Best part: The uncut version of the cave scene. Whedon felt this should be guillotined so we could spend more time on the farm, I bet he now wishes he cut that "Natasha = monster" scene instead.

8. Crimson Peak

No Caption Provided

Not quite the masterpiece I was expecting but then I my expectations were fairly unrealistic. Unfortunately not as successful as expected at the box office thereby Bluebearding my hopes for a large-scale gothic horror renaissance, though Universal persists with their Universal Monster Cinematic Universe (I did not intend on typing the word "Universe" that often) so hope still remains for the future of pipe-organ film scores.

Best part: Set design, naturally.

7. Bone Tomahawk

No Caption Provided

I was expecting (and maybe half wanting) a pure ultraviolent exploitation piece from this Kurt Russell - plus a bunch of other actors I like - Western but I was quite surprised. Beautifully shot and awesomely performed (especially Richard Jenkins, he's such loveable old coot here) this might be classiest film I ever seen where someone gets their vocal chord graphically cut out their throat. Might be.

Best part: Scalping scen... Uggghhhh WTF?!

6. The Gift

No Caption Provided

Congratualtions Joel Edgerton, I have officially bumped you up from "Dude In Movies I Don't Watch" to "A National Treasure". :)

Best part: Jason Bateman playing against-type.

5. Ex Machina

No Caption Provided

Why, in movies, do we always create artificial intelligence that is more intelligent than us? Sounds like that's just asking for trouble. Cyborg better look at least as good as Ava.

Best part: Red light = tension!

4. Jurassic World

No Caption Provided

Any movie that can make cynical old me feel like dino-loving 6 year old me again gets an instant spot in this list. It's the climax, it's all about the climax.

On another note: why would anyone actually care what shoes she was wearing...?

Best part: Obviously Paddock 9 opening

3. Mad Max: Fury Road

No Caption Provided

It's so awesome when a movie I want to succeed actually does better I ever even imagined it could. One question though, what's with Furiosa's accent? Where the hell did she even get that accent?

Best part: The Doof is who I want to be...

2. Inside Out

No Caption Provided

If I actually gave a jizz about any dumbass award ceremonies I'd say this would be the most logical winner of Best Picture. It's good to know Pixar's best days may not be behind them after all, surely the next Cars will be the last, right?

Best part: The fact it gave me the feels over a character who wasn't even real!

1. It Follows

No Caption Provided

It would seem the sex = death in a horror movie trope is alive and well, not to mention the growing-up-sucks genre (I love that genre), I liked this one so much I watched it twice in a row - and I never do that.

Best part: That opening scene and how you have no idea WTF is going but realize later on how cool it was in retrospect.

Honourable Mentions:

  • The Final Girls
  • Bridge of Spies
  • The Good Dinosaur
  • The Revenant
  • The Martian
  • Cinderella (yes, really)
  • Straight Outta Compton
  • Run All Night
  • Big Eyes

I went to see Avengers Age of Ultron once while intoxicated and fell asleep half way through because it was boring. The rest of the movies on this list, I have not watched.

These nerds are going to lose their shit when they realize you didn't include Star Wars.

@invain: I didn't see Star Wars so I can't comment on that one.

Really? Not one other than AoU? I would've figured at least 2, 3 or 4...

I would've liked you to sum up more what you liked about each film, but I still enjoyed this list! I'm hoping for more other users to make something like this. I intend to publish one soon. Not sure when.

Would I be correct in assuming you prioritized personal preference instead of objective quality? Or do you really believe Age of Ultron is a better made film then, say, The Revenant? I'm not attacking your opinion, I am genuinely curious.

Again, enjoyable list!

Hope to see more lists from you. Why don't you do a ranking of the MCU? I would love that!

Perfect timing. I'm in the process of preparing my list. I will put it out sunday. First it was gonna be top 30 but had to short it down to top 25. I had seen many good movies this year that i had to cut out 10 movies just from the honorable mentions alone. I hate not giving attention to movies that deserve it. I have seen 92% of the movies on your list and hon mens. Hmmm i'm not sure how I feel about it overall.

But it's you opinion I respect it. Wish I could comment on the movies independently but I'm on my phone and I hate typing on here.

Also I'm glad im not the only person who doesnt have Star Wars on their list. Since I havent seen it either.

Most average movie watchers will put Mad Max or Star Wars at #1. My taste is pretty different

@theamazingspidey: I'm what some might call a "head-up-his-own-ass" kind of viewer, my personal preference is the only thing that matters to me. Might make me sound like a douche but at least my lists won't just be carbon copies of everyone elses because I hold professional film critics and their opinions in contempt.

But seriously imo, objectivity is non-existent when judging a film's quality. A film of objective quality is one where the director remembers to take the lens cap off the camera before filming. Objectively speaking: there are no good movies, only existing ones. Every rule every legendary director ever told every young protégé is still just a subjective opinion. No art is objective, if it is - it's not art.

As far as Age of Ultron vs The Revenant is concerned, I like The Revenant (obviously, I mentioned it after all) but I know I will probably never watch it again in my life. I've seen AoU three times now and I enjoyed it more than the first. I don't need to over-analyze my mind to realize I'd support AoU in that battle. The fact that I'd be only soldier on its side matters not to me.

I would opt not to do a CBM ranking until later in the year as this is probably going to be the best year yet for them and my opinion would surely change soon after. Unless they all suck, which is possible. Unlikely but possible.

Thank you for your comments, I look forward to reading your own. ^_^

I guess I'm the only one here that doesn't quite understand It Follows. It made little to no sense for me.

Crimson Peak was underwhelming for me, to be honest. Good, but not intriguing.

If you had differing opinions I'd like to hear them, films make my lists based on knee-jerk reactions. I choose not to overthink it, this makes for divisive selections and (in my opinion) a more interesting dialogue.

Thank you friend, I have not seen Star Wars. I did not see Star Wars because I am not a Star Wars fan (I'm not a hater either). They'll just have to make do without my money. ;)

I was slightly disappointed, pre-release I thought for sure it would be my number 1 due to my fondness for gothic horror films, however it still offered enough of what I wanted most from it (visuals and atmosphere) to make my 10.

It Follows wasn't for everyone, but it was for me. I find growth and the loss of innocence a captivating theme within horror so it had me fairly hooked. I felt it benefitted from a second viewing and might recommend you watch it again - there was a lot more story than I first noticed.

I understand where you're coming from in that respect. Hell, I've went back and forth on whether or not you can "objectively" judge a movie. And yes, in the end of the day, it is all opinion. It is all your opinion of how good a movie is. Your opinion of how good a movie is, is just as subjective as how much you enjoy the movie.

However, you can judge a film on several factors to determine how good it is as a piece of film. You can judge a film on how much you enjoyed it, which you state to be doing, that is perfectly fine, but you can also look at character logic, editing, originality, plot holes, plot consistency, writing, pacing, self awareness, character motivation. I'm just spit balling here. For example, The Avengers is one of the most enjoyable movies for me. It's simple, fun, effective, achieved everything it set out to achieved. But when I compare it to The Dark Knight: that movie had much better conceived characters, it had a more meaningful story, it had more stakes to the story, it was more original. While The Avengers is a generic team up story.

Therefore, I conclude that The Avengers is the movie I enjoy the most from the two. I prefer it. But The Dark Knight is better made. It is a better piece of film making that holds up much better when put side-to-side with classics like The Shawshank Redemption, then The Avengers would. Do you get what I mean? I understand that not everyone thinks the same way towards movies. As a matter of fact, you might feel contempt towards me for saying this. I just hope you understand where I'm coming from.

I watched The Revenant twice in theaters and will be watching it a third time. This is mostly for the film making craft. It had bold film making, it was a visual masterpiece and the scenery was absolutely breathtaking. The one-shots were amazing. It also had impressive physical acting in Leonardo DiCaprio, (it's always guaranteed it's his year for the Oscar, since he collected a Golden Globe, SAG and BAFTA for his performance) and an Oscar worthy performance by Tom Hardy (he'll probably be snubbed by Leonardo DiCaprio. It was also one of the most "in-the-movie" films I've seen in years, in which you actually felt the struggle of Hugh Glass. Age of Ultron is a simpler watch, but it ultimately wasn't as accomplished as The Revenant, therefore I conclude that Alejandro González Iñárritu's film to be much better then Joss Whedon's. Again, not trying to change your opinion at all. I'm just using another example of this mentality.

I understand. Me too! In fact, I'm considering waiting until after 2017 because if they execute the WW film well enough, that could be in my Top 15. And if Batman v. Superman delivers, then Part 1 of the Justice League is also a contender. And Spider-Man is one of my favorite superheroes, so I'm inclined to wait for his reboot. Poor Spider-Man. He hasn't been treated very well in the cinematic realm. This is the third, modern attempt at the character. In my opinion, we've only gotten one great Spider-Man film, Spider-Man 2. And it was awesome. Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3 were both mediocre. The Amazing Spider-Man movies are guilty pleasures. I hope they bring us a Spider-Man 2 level Spidey film this time around.

Are you impressed with the quality of superhero movies so far, this year? By that, I mean Deadpool.

I should stop now. I'm reaching SC levels of posting.

I guess I was too shallow while watching it (Crimson Peak). It just seemed like any other old-timey movie. I didn't get any underlying messages quite like I did with The Babadook.... Now that's a good film.

It Follows wasn't for everyone, but it was for me. I find growth and the loss of innocence a captivating theme within horror so it had me fairly hooked. I felt it benefitted from a second viewing and might recommend you watch it again - there was a lot more story than I first noticed.

I kind of saw where they were going, but the execution on both the actors and the directors part in my opinion, could have been better. I may just watch it again.

@theamazingspidey: First, Deadpool ruled and surprisingly so as I always found him annoying more than anything before the film. But I'm happy for it's success, Ryan Reynolds gave me a reason to like Wade Wilson and the action was the tightest and hardest-hitting of any CBM I've seen (that might just be due to me seeing in Imax however). The bar is high.

I may have seen far more faults in AoU than many other films but I don't take marks off for what I believe are flaws if a movie gives me other things I like. Sometimes I love a movie more for its flaws. I prefer a movie with one scene I love than ten I like. I feel over-analyzing a film takes the enjoyment out of it for me, I rather go with my gut.

Spidey has done fine in movies:

  • Spider-Man hasn't aged so good but still has the distinction of being the film that really kicked off the CBM age, not X-Men or Blade.
  • Spider-Man 2 I agree is still one of the best cbms and easily the best.
  • Spider-Man 3, yeah no.
  • Amazing Spider-Man is a decent movie imo. I liked it.
  • Amazing Spider-Man 2 has some good stuff, it's problem is it's made like a TV episode not a movie. There's basically more stuff relevant to the future in than the present in it.

Five movies and an assurance of more movies in the future is a great place to be at. I'm a Titans fan more than anything... They don't even have 1 movie or any announced for the future... Poor Spider-Man? >.<

Also, I didn't want to have to admit this but I was fairly toasted while watching The Revenant. I really don't remember the shot details. >.>

I agree. Deadpool set the bar very high. It is easily the most fun I've had in cinemas in years, possibly the most fun I've had in all time. It holds a special place in my heart. The action was great as you mentioned. But another reason I loved it is the non-linear storytelling and the pacing. That way, you're served the ultra violent from the get-go, and also some form of buildup with the flashback. Instead of sitting through an hour of origin story, then an hour of action, you get both simultaneously. It was just hysterical. The entire theater was laughing minute by minute (to be fair, it isn't that hard to get Aussies to laugh but this was easily the most enthusiasm I've heard from an audience since Harry Potter).

Easily my favorite superhero movie.

That's a fair mindset. Age of Ultron had great scenes: Hawkeye's speech, Ultron in code form, house fight scene. It's still a fairly entertaining movie imo. I don't blame you for liking it, or hell, loving it. I'm respecting of your standpoint on film. Sometimes I just want to tear my hair out because I'm trying to critique shit. And to be fair, I sometimes slip. Hell, I rated Deadpool a 10 on my review. If I rate BvS: Dawn of Justice too high, I'm bound to get people who tell me I'm too liberal with my ratings, but like you, if I love a film a lot, I will rate it how I feel I should rate it. For example, Deadpool had a hollow villain, very few surprises, average cinematography outside of the fight sequences... but I enjoyed the living hell out of it. Why I should I bother with those flaws?

It really depends. If my love for a film is overwhelming, I will also ignore flaws.

You make a valid point, lol, but what I mean is that Spider-Man has had quite the variation of quality over the years and has struggled to find his home. I don't think another superhero in the cinematic realm's been rebooted this regularly and rapidly. Sam Raimi's films were rebooted 5 years after.

Now they took a year break from the Spider-Man franchise, and they're rebooting him again in Civil War. It's like he's a new pair of shoes.

I don't think I'll understand "watching movies drunk" xD

Yes Aussies tend to be easily amused imo. I felt like everyone but me was pissing their pants during Ant-Man.

Another way to look at your scoring system could be, does any film deserve a 10?

Spidey (like Bats) gets the constant rebooting because he's the priority, it's their special treatment. It's a compliment in a way.

Well, I'm not easily amused. And I hate it. I wish I could laugh at more things. I'd probably live much longer but I'm so miserable heh.

Well, Roger Ebert said you should rate a film depending on how well it achieved everything that it set out to accomplish. Deadpool accomplished everything it set out to, which is why I rated it a ten out of ten. But as I pointed out before, that's just a personal rating. That movie overwhelmed me with love. That said, I don't rate everything a 10 out of 10. I have a standard. I'm mostly liberal with comic book movies because they're comic book movies. They're what got me into film. They were my childhood.

There are only select movies like The Shawshank Redemption and Whiplash that I rate a 10 out of 10. Hell, I wouldn't rate Blade Runner, 12 Angry Men, or To Kill A Mockingbird a 10 out of 10. I'm not just saying this because I want to declare "I'm the next Roger Ebert. I'm such a great critic. Look at me, I've got such a high standard." I just don't want people to think I rate everything a ten.

I still think Batman has had a better cinematic run then Spider-Man. Batman has had 5 movies that were a success. Spider-Man's had a rocky career with the polarizing Marc Webb franchise, and the awful Spider-Man 3.

@black_wreath: Well let me save you some time.

Kingsman, Fricken great definitely worth a watch, even if you don't like spy movies. This was to spy movies. What the original Kickass was to superhero movies.

Spectre, aka, the new James Bond. It was good. American Ultra, also good, but very unoriginal.

Man from Uncle, and The new Mission Impossible, both absolute shit don't waste you're time.

Haven't seen but plan to and could be on the list : Revenant, Hateful 8, Concussion, Pawn Sacrifice, Creed, Straight Outta Compton, Southpaw, The Martian, The Big Short, Ex Machina, The Walk, The man from UNCLE, The Lobster, Everest,Legend, etc....But most of these aren't going to happen anytime soon so....

And I didn't watch Star Wars yet and don't plan to either....

Victor Frankenstein was something I was pumped for then when it came out (for some reason, apparently nowhere in my area...) I heard it had very little to do with Frankenstein and was mostly a buddy movie with a minute of the monster. I'll probably watch it eventually though.

Chappie, to me was the most disappointing film of 2015. I think I can now officially say I dislike Blomkamps films as soon as they get to the third act as that's when he seems to give up on having new ideas.

That's all I saw from your list but thank you for sharing and not seeing Star Wars. ^_^

@invain: Really? Not one other than AoU? I would've figured at least 2, 3 or 4...

Didn't go to the movies much last year.

If anyone cares I'll do a top 7, just because I've only seen 8 movies released last year and hated 1 of them (It was Spectre)

7. Ant Man

6. Avengers: Age of Ultron

5. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation

4. Bridge of Spies

3. The Martian

2. Inside Out

1. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

I have disappointed you. :(

Be it the order or be it the selections?

@black_wreath: Well let me save you some time.

Kingsman, Fricken great definitely worth a watch, even if you don't like spy movies. This was to spy movies. What the original Kickass was to superhero movies.

Spectre, aka, the new James Bond. It was good. American Ultra, also good, but very unoriginal.

Man from Uncle, and The new Mission Impossible, both absolute shit don't waste you're time.

And what about Paul Feig's Spy? ^_^

You took Chappie too seriously....i was not hyped for it at all but when I watched it, it turned out to be awesome...So I guess it has to do with expectations...Although I agree, they could've improved it in terms of their foul language, their clothes, etc but the third act was just like the producers saying "We have giant robots in our movie, so I advice you to use them in a big fight so people aren't dissapointed.." so the director tried to include them into the movie...Acting was solid tho, and basic plot line too...

@abdullahzubair: I was hyped for Chappie and so was let down. The action was fine and the title character was the best thing in it. My problem was the plot points were a repetition of the director's previous films. That and Die Antwoord bothered me, a group whose trolling I kinda liked until this movie.

Recurring themes are an interesting thing to have in a director's filmography, recurring plots - not so much.

Well....I didn't watch any of his previous movies so if you watched Chappie before others, then you might have liked it more.. Were they at least done differently...??.

@abdullahzubair: District 9 is the best one by a large margin and genuinely felt original.

Watch them back to back you'll notice that they all feature: Sharlto Copley, gangsters, commentary on the socio-polital-economic status of South Africa (resulting in big explosions) and a volatile military guy as a villain...

They all start with a unique, intelligence sci fi premise before becoming a Michael Bay film, basically The Island...

Well... I haven't seen the island or the District 9 so can't argue there...But District 9 has gotten lots of praise so will be looking at that shortly... But which has better execution and better premise is important...

No mentions of Sicario? imo that was easily a top 5 movie of 2015. I'd also put Antman as the top cbm of 2015.

I haven't seen it, I probably should since Emily Blunt is one of my reasons to continue living.

I have a personal grudge against Ant Man and by extension Edgar Wright too now. It's actually the first MCU film I opted not to own when it came out on dvd.

4. Jurassic World

3. Avengers: Age of Ultron

2. The Revenant

1. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Yea I didn't watch a whole lot of films last year...

Just for the record The Revenant is a better film but I'm still amazed we git a really good Star Wars film, and I love Star Wars.

On my to watch list:

Mad Max

Ant Man

Kingsman

Hateful 8

Straight Outta Compton

The Big Short

Ex Machina

The man from UNCLE

Legend

I can't believe someone actually enjoyed Pixels, that film was most definitely awful and I didn't even waste my time with it. Then again it seems people are still fans of Adam Sandler films...I was when I was 12.

I was a little surprised too but I can't comment as I haven't seen it - I avoided it like chlamydia.

Excellent list, especially the top 3 which is exactly the same as mine.

Have you seen the Revenant?

@jhazzroucher: Actually this was just personal preference, box office was not taken into the equation.

Seriously? I did not expect anyone to say that. XD

Those of use who believe metaphorical-STD horror and psychoanalytical children's films go well together are a rare breed, we must cherish each other...

No Caption Provided

Yes I saw the Revenant, I gave it an honourable mention. I was heavily inebriated while watching it so it was either handicapped or given an unfair advantage... I'm not sure which so I just left it off the list.

I couldn't forgive what they did to Janet. I was looking so hard for her in the quantum realm...
