Best Daredevil Covers, #s 1-100

Daredevil has been a longtime favorite of mine. Recently, I've been trying to round off my collection of the first volume. I'm close. I'm now officially one hundred issues away from having a complete set! To celebrate, here are my top ten favorite covers from the first one hundred issues.

List items

  • Gene Colan is one of the best Daredevil artists of all time. I've always found this cover to be a great one because we get to see both of the Daredevil costumes.

  • This is the first meeting of Daredevil and Spider-Man. Though they've had several team-ups over time, this one is special. The Frank Giacoia cover is absolutely perfect.

  • Barry-Windsor Smith's cover to issue #51 is one of my favorite covers of all time. It gives Matt Murdoch the spotlight instead of Daredevil.

  • This Wally Wood cover is simple, but iconic. Characters roping under Stiltman's legs is something readers see in nearly every Stiltman appearance. This one is different because it was first.

  • The 50s were a rich period for Daredevil covers. I was fortunate enough to be able to pick up a nice run of these a while back. I love how Daredevil, the man without fear, is surrounded by the word coward.

  • I love this cover featuring the horribly underutilized Mr. Fear. I think the black border and excellent perspective make it a winner.

  • Gene Colan's cover featuring Dr. Doom is killer. While we see DD's reflection in Dr. Doom's mask, he's really trapped inside Dr. Doom's body! This is a great, zany issue all 'round.

  • The 100th issue is a special one to me not only because it has a great cover, but it was also the first "old" issue of Daredevil I purchased. I love DD's rogue gallery in the background in gray and blue while Daredevil swings over them.

  • Black Widow is receiving a renaissance now thanks to the Avengers movie, but it pays heed to remember that she and Daredevil once shared the Man Without Fear title together. I love the later Daredevil book covers for providing essentially a window for us to see the cover action while having the border around it.

  • While wordy by today's standard, this cover is a classic. It's essentially a sales pitch by tying in Spider-Man and Fantastic Four. "Hey, look! we created these guys too so this has to be great!"
