The disrespect is crazy in this thread.
No, MJ is not overrated. He's crazy influential to pop music today, was an amazing entertainer and has some of the most famous songs of all time. His music could make you dance or cry.
The people mentioned above are amazing too, and it's crazy that some people never heard of them. Their legacy doesn't make MJ overrated though.
Jimi Hendrix is extremely influential and was the greatest guitar player of all time. His influence on rock/blues and guitar playing is immense. Are You Experienced is commonly put up there as one of the greatest albums of all time.
Bob Marley became a huge cultural icon and pioneered reggae into popularity in the states. I just don't think he was as musically superior compared to others (instruments, singing, etc).
Freddie Mercury is one of the greatest lead singers in rock/pop. I think Queen has an amazing greatest hits album, but their albums were pretty disappointing. Still, Mercury is an absolute legend.
Yes Bowie is arguably more influential (I'm a big fan) than MJ. and Prince was very musically talented, but you can't deny the immense popularity MJ had, which you have to respect. It's no easy task, and very few people achieved his success. Many modern singers are clearly influenced by him, in dance and vocals, like Bieber, Usher, Jason Derulo, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, and so much more. He's definitely not my favorite artist or anything, but I can't not respect his imprint in music history.
