The bit about the Avatar's role wasn't something I had previously considered regarding this fight. Not only from the standpoint of restoring airbending to the world, but Korra only ends up in this situation because she chooses to sacrifice herself to save the airbenders - if not for her being chained up on Laghima's peak, Zaheer wouldn't have been able to capture her. Zaheer despises world leaders, and he sees the Avatar as the ultimate authority figure who transcends the divisions of nations and is globally revered, yet here she is willingly laying down her own life for other people. And only because of this sacrifice are the airbenders able to rally together to pull Zaheer out of the sky, defeating him physically, spiritually, and ideologically. It's another layer of irony to this brilliant scene.
