I think the Void is used as a plot device to further the downfall of Cyclops. The void is an entity that forces its victim to act upon the darkest impulses in their mind. On the other hand, Cyke had a strong Psychic defense. Perhaps what happened to Scott is that the Phoenix and the Void are trying to take control over himself, and to win the Phoenix had no choice but to call Jean herself. Jean was a double-edged sword to the phoenix as she not only helped Phoenix overcome the void but secretly helped Scott in taking control over the bird's own power. The first part became a success, but because of Void's influence, Scott's psyche was somewhat shattered. The revolutionary Scott we saw at the end was one who was fractured by the society, the world, the Phoenix, the Void, and most of all, by his own guilt upon killing his mentor.

The only reason I can support for not liking Cyclops is the Madelyne Pryor and Emma fiasco, but that issue really fixed itself over time. He is the only leader suitable and no one really stepped up to lead when the race was dwindling. Xavier died which was sad to folks, not me, he will be better as a martyr to drive the x-men forward though.

I think Marvel is responsible for Madelyne Pryor's situation. The post phoenix death arc and the duel were never Storm's arc, to begin with. They are the arcs of both Cyclops and Storm. While Storm's arc is about rising to the situation and become the leader, Cyclops's one focuses on finally letting go of the X-Men and grow up as a man. The moment Jean dies and reborn as Phoenix (which Marvel screwed Chris Claremont over by reviving Jean Grey), we all know that something will be different. Instead of Jean getting a rise in her own power, the Phoenix represents her as being who is possessed and slowly losing control over herself. At the end of her suicide, Cyke feels as if his bonds to the X-Men are also lost.

Now comes another character who basically looks like Jean, but she has none of Jean's powers, to begin with. Furthermore, in many situations, even in the current stories, it was hinted that Scott and Jean are holding each other back while being a support to each other as well. It was exactly why in the post-Jean death stories Scott's character arc felt as if it is going through the development phase. After Scott lost Jean, he felt as if he lost his will to stay and fight. With Madelyne, Chris Claremont's supposed happy ending involves Scott leaving the X-Men to show that he had grown as a character, before returning to the original crew, except Dazzler replacing Jean in the X-Factor series.

The duel, where Scott was forced to accept his new reality as an incapable leader because of his struggles in deciding, which was the best choice between his team and family is the closing story for the aftermath arc from Jean's loss. Once Claremont started working on X-Factor, Marvel forced him to replace Dazzler with their Jean, whose resurrection and Phoenix being a separate entity rather than a force that possessed her.

With no other choice, Claremont had to accept Jean and made her the heroine of X-Factor. But editorial did not stop there, they wanted to kill off Madelyne in the worst way possible. Thus the story of Scott being a deadbeat husband and a deadbeat father happened. Moreover, they even turned her into a villain who is not only Jean's clone but also a deadbeat mother who is willing to sacrifice her son for more power (At least, it gave us Mister "Jean+Scott obsessed" Sinister and Alexander "Magic Mike" Summers).

Now the Psychic Affair between Scott and Emma. Rather than seeing the affair itself, it's better to check on everything that happened before it. Scott's story begun after he got separated from Apocalypse, but with a scarred mind. Around this time, Emma has to deal with the massacre at Genosha with her having to deal with survivor's guilt. Jean, who is not ready for a leadership role, got herself placed as the headmaster, and her increasing powers thanks to her newfound mastery over the Phoenix Force and Scott's own issues lead to a failing marriage.

All of these events culminated into a situation where Scott chooses to attend therapy sessions with Emma, who herself is finding a form of comfort in her rival's husband. With all these going on, one situation changed everything for them. The riot at Xavier's led by a rebel student named Quentin, resulting in Emma losing a daughter.

Scott who already understands this pain decided to comfort his new friend, who wants to escape her sadness by any means necessary. Thus she entered insider Scott's mind, instigating the affair. One another thing to note about this situation is that another one of Emma's daughters is mad with Emma doing nothing like she used to. Thus, she informs her headmistress which results in them being caught.

All in all, the affair was the perfect turning point in Scott's character. Many of us know that his love for Jean is holding him to the X-Men and her powers and personality somehow holding him back from pushing himself forward. However, the affair splits them up.

One thing I like to say about Scott's story is that while it's happening, people won't like where it goes, but once it's done, everyone will inevitably accept that everything falls perfectly, in his journey as a character and as a person. And that is why Cyclops is Right (I mean the best).

@mcklayn: Not a force field, but a suppression field. an AoE move that serves as both a defensive and offensive move would be better. Scott's power is like getting hit by a bullet. It could be a non-lethal stun shot or a massive blast on the scale of Death Star Superlaser. All in all, his blasts are contented solid light beams that can be used as a variety of blasts. For someone like him, a suppression field would be the perfect technique. While all three brothers absorb energy, Vulcan has complete control over those blasts while Havok can convert and store it at a faster and higher rate. As a matter of fact, it could be stated that the psychic fields around the three brothers are somewhat different.

Havok's field should be called the absorption field while Vulcan's should be called a domination field as he manipulates the energy as soon as it enters his zone. This domination field allows Vulcan to understand, comprehend and take total control over the energy around him and converts it into something he can absorb faster, unlike Alex, whose body converts the energy after he absorbs. Also, Marvel confirmed that Scott needs to absorb energy in order to use his punch beams.

This could be speculated as to the same case as Vulcan. As Scott's body is metabolizing the absorbed energies, it converts itself into his stamina and durability. This could be seen during the King in Black Event. Here, there possessed Cyclops' powers are not only weak but also dodgeable. More than that, he was knocked out with a single punch. While many readers and fans theorized that his powers have retconned to absorbing solar energy, I'd say did not. He does absorb solar energy, but it enhances his physiology, especially his stamina keeping him in a peak state all the time. This also happens to his brothers as well but to a greater extent.

Without these enhancements, the three brothers would've already been worn out, exhausting themselves after having a great moment of their own. While this enhanced stamina does run out over time, as such Scott always gets tired or knocked out after struck by a thunderbolt stream from Ororo, it cannot be helped to notice that his stamina and resilience are no joke.

The best part about being in a competition is never about keeping first place for yourself. It's about falling and getting back and returning to the first place by surpassing the one that beats you and struggles yourself to keep the position but will always be prepared for a fall so that you can rise again. That is what Scott is. Many times throughout his journey, he failed far miserably and faced bigger issues than anyone else. Yet he returns, better and stronger.

He would gladly give up his position to someone else once the job is done, but until that time, he will struggle. And when he fails at its end, he would simply acknowledge his defeat as well as the superiority of his opponent, before silently walking away. Because of that, he is still an important piece in the history of the Marvel universe, even if many people hate and undermine him.

What I found interesting about Cyclops is no matter, which writer comes and goes, their story somehow fits in with his character arc. I don't know how it happens, but every time a writer touchers Scott, we hate the guy, and when he is done, we realize that somehow it was exactly how it meant to be. Even when he was written as the worst, somehow it fits. More than that, I came to accept his affair, fall, death, and even the soul-searching arc. Somehow, they all fit him, but not for a character, but for a human.

@frocharocha: The only sad part about fate is that Karna is can only be summoned as a Lancer, and his weapon is a one-time galactic scale spear. In the epic, many characters, including Krishna, Parashurama, and Bhishma have stated that no man in this world is equal to you in archery as well as the mystic/ divine arts of Astra. He does not have many weapons like Arjuna, nor does the facilities and time to acquire them. The only powerful weapons he has are the Spear from the series, a powerful bow that once belonged to the God of Destruction himself, and a unique set of divine and mystic astras including the ever famous Brahma Astra and the extremely poisonous Naga Astra as well as the most destructive Bhargava Astra.

Karna was nerfed with each and every step, but nothing could stop this guy from doing what he wanted. He was cursed to forget everything he learned at a crucial moment in his life, made to offer the armor that protects him from all kinds of attacks and nullify any kind of magic, had his earrings that prevent curses, poisons, and illness from affecting his body and soul removed, put in an emotional turmoil between his blood brothers and sworn brothers and finally, he was stripped of every In the end, he chooses to move on to the next life, only because God himself personally begged him, telling him that he had done more than his part to this world and now he must leave by offering all the Graces that he had acquired from his immense good deeds.

If only he was given the class of either Caster or his favored Archer class, he could show his full potential. But then again, the creators must have thought that if he was put in either of those classes or even rider, which he was proficient at, he could be unstoppable. Perhaps it is exactly why he was nerfed to the job of a Lancer and granted a limited edition weapon like the divine spear of the thunder god Indra, Vasavi Shakti.

I wouldn't mind Emma getting married, but Scott is the archetypical tragic hero, someone who gets a screw off every time he came close to a happy ending. With Madelyne, Jean, and every woman who came into his life offering him happy endings ended up with a tragedy. Thus, it is better for them to stay the way they are since both of them made the other better and became more than just supporters.

She is the only one who has a soft spot. Other than a few students and some teammates, he humanizes her the most and she empowers him in ways Jean cannot. Jean acts as Scott's moral and emotional support, but Emma made him more confident and outspoken. She made him face his fears, insecurities, and trauma, something that neither the professor nor Jean did. Also, Scott asked Emma to erase memories of his and Frenzy's AoX relationship from his memories, even though the post-AvX Cyclops is a mix of both his AoX and Ruler of Utopia personality. As for Emma, Scott came in her like at the breaking point where she had fully lost everything. He reminded her of who she was before hellfire club and gave her the life of what could have been if she took Xavier's offer when he and Scott came for her as a teenager. He helped her rebuild herself from her broken pieces and put her on a path of redemption.

We all know how that turned out in X Men the End. I wouldn't mind seeing either Ruby or Megan. Or Ruby being Megan's some form of alternate reality future counterpart where Cyclops lived and hardened himself and became a more bitter and ruthless version of Revolutionary Scott.
