Superman (DCAU) Respect Thread
By Amendment50 29 Comments
This is another respect thread I ripped from one of my CaV openers, one against Kenshiro which turned out to be a mismatch. I believe there is another, much older respect thread for DCAU Supes on CV but this should be easier to follow and more comprehensive. It's a good place to reference anyway.
DCAU Superman:
Biography:
This is Superman from the DCAU- that's Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited. He's the same old Superman- doomed planet, desperate scientists, last hope, kindly couple- and is a pretty typical portrayal, but significantly weaker than most depictions of Superman. Even then he is completely superhuman and one of the most powerful beings in the whole DCAU with almost certainly most of the best physical feats.
Strength:
Superman has some spotty strength showings from episode to episode, especially in the original animated series, but when push comes to shove, he is pretty exceptional even then. By JLU his regular strength level is about on par with many of his most impressive showings from S:TAS.
Overpowers a massive hydraulic press powered by machinery that takes up the space of an entire roof. Effortlessly lifts hundreds of tons.
Easily punches a guy across the length of a casino. Just as easily punches him into the air so high that he doesn't come down for 15 seconds.
Literally knocks a 350 pound gorilla the length of a football field with a finger flick.
Easily smashes a gigantic boulder with one punch. Easily knocks Lobo from the street all the way through the top floor of a skyscraper with one punch.
Casually blocks angered blows from the superpowered Apokoliptian, Kalibak.
Superman is strongly and repeatedly implied to be more powerful than Supergirl who can lift skyscrapers. He even lifted a skyscraper himself in Batman Beyond, if you don't believe me.
One-shots Aquaman who can hold his own against and tank blows from Wonder Woman.
Diana is building level herself for reference.
Single punches that create shockwaves enough to shatter all the windows of skyscrapers. A punch hard enough to collapse a building with one blow.
Angered punches shake Metropolis itself. A single serious punch is enough to warp the air and knock Darkseid through 7 skyscrapers without even slowing down. A sledgehammer levels a city block. Also note him clearing the entire distance instantaneously, as a showing of speed.
Durability:
Superman's durability is on par with his strength and he has tanked repeated blows from opponents at his strength level countless times before.
Superman is impervious to lava. He is also impervious to bladed weapons, bullets, bombs, lasers and most conventional weaponry in general.
Tanks a fall from a skyscraper with no injury.
Tanks repeated blows that shake the earth. (They are in an underground facility, the walls and floor are shaking from the hits.)
Tanks punches from Darkseid that not only shake the earth but crumble a palace.
Tanks repeated blows from Captain Marvel, who has almost Superman-level strength, hard enough to collapse a skyscraper. Their fight destroyed every building in sight.
Takes a point-blank blast from Darkseid that reduces the entire palace to rubble. Walks away with burns; not even KO'd.
Tanks an explosion that dwarfs the size of a pyramid with no injury whatsoever- just look at the resulting crater. This explosion was self-inflicted by the way and created by flying into the ground.
Speed:
Superman, like many characters in the DCAU, is prone to jobbing and does not always use his speed effectively. However, his reaction and travel speeds are both impressive and when used properly he can casually move at hypersonic speeds.
Casually faster than human perception. (Yes, that is Superman in Batman's costume.)
Catches bullets super casually.
Can tag the Flash who is casually faster than electricity.
Superman can also give Flash a serious run for his money at normal non-strained running speeds. Superman and Flash were both implied to be able to circle the Earth 100 times over the time it would take to complete a normal race.
Travels from Metropolis to orbit in a split second.
Reacts to and dodges a blast of electricity.
Livewire has literally described herself as "pure electricity, 186,000 miles per second" in the past (Superman TAS, "Double Dose") so there's really no argument that this is some kind of Avatar-verse fake stuff. But even if you want to stretch it and aren't impressed by that...
Superman has also reacted to and outsped real lightning.
...more than once.
Misc:
Superman's heat vision is strong enough to cut through solid rock and hot enough to melt steel, quickly and casually.
In a concentrated burst, a heat vision blast is enough to down Mongul similar to his physical blows. When really cutting loose (for instance under Darkseid's brainwashing) a single burst of his heat vision created an explosion large enough to clear a massive palace.
Unlike his comic counterpart, Superman does not have freezing breath in the DCAU. However he does retain super-powerful breath, just without the freezing element.
While pretty much out-of-character, Superman notably displayed the ability and resourcefulness to use his heat vision to lobotomize Doomsday. It's worth noting in a bloodlusted match as a very quick means of earning a kill/victory, especially given that his heat vision can easily penetrate the skull of Doomsday who has Superman-level durability.
It's worth noting that there are comics based on the DCAU as well. Those were not led by Bruce Timm to my knowledge and I believe their canonicity is arguable. I haven't read them either way so consider this respect thread strictly an evaluation of Superman's animated feats.
I'm a big fan of the DCAU, and Tim Daly's is one of my favorite portrayals of Superman out there. Hopefully this provides a clearer reference for anyone curious!
Thanks for reading, all!
