Jessica Jones (Earth-616) Respect Thread

I put this together for my CaV against Gintoki Sakata but a lot of it's pretty generally applicable so I figured I may as well turn it into a full-fledged RT and help pad out my blog more.

I imagine that a lot of people are curious about Jessica's general power level in the comics after the Netflix show, and it would be nice to have a place to direct people, so without further ado...

Jessica Jones:

Be warned about language. Jessica likes four-letter words and I already got permission from the mods to give a general warning rather than censor it all, so keep that in mind going forward.

Alias #1 (2001)
Alias #1 (2001)

Biography:

Jessica Jones, wife of Luke Cage and mother of Danielle, is a private investigator, former superhero and member of the New Avengers. Following the car accident that killed her family, Jessica developed superpowers that gave her strength, speed and stamina well above any average person. While in her early appearances she was severely out of practice and out of shape, at her best Jessica has shown to have strength on the level of super soldiers and has a number of standout feats that allow her to compensate for a general lack of skill.

Overall, Jessica's real foe has never really been the forces of evil- more like the forces of shitty New York life in a world full of crazy-ass superheroes. Jessica has never really been the hero type and tends to shy away from fights, but more recently her experiences alongside her husband Luke Cage have given her a lot more experience and training at using her superpowers, bringing her physicals back to her peak and giving her control over her ability to fly again... although she got pretty rusty during a stint of prison and is pretty much disassociated from the Avengers. So she's not exactly at her prime right now...

All the same, Jessica has threatened Wolverine to his face, bitch-slapped Spider-Man and constantly intimidates the hell out of Luke Cage. All in all she is one tough lady, and not someone you want to piss off.

Strength:

Raw strength is Jessica's best asset by a pretty wide margin in general, especially based on her more recent showings. Initially, during Alias (where she debuted) she had some trouble even with ordinary humans and embarrassed herself even against a regular convenience store robber (in an absolutely great scene I might add).

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4
Alias #16 (2003)

That said, Jessica is not ordinary human level- not even peak human level based on her best feats. She has come far and improved a lot since her early days.

And even then, from Alias, which has her lowest showings:

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3
Alias #5 (2002)

Jessica easily punks Man Mountain Marko- a heavily enhanced superhuman that has traded blows with Spider-Man and Luke Cage- even though he got the drop on her. (And this is during Alias, where she is far from her prime!)

Alias #8 (2002)
Alias #8 (2002)

Tears through a chain-link fence with her bare hands.

Alias #21 (2003)
Alias #21 (2003)

Puts a man's head through a TV.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3
Alias #20 (2003)

And one-shots Spider-woman (Jessica Drew).

Her feats have only gotten better with time, and she is especially dangerous with bloodlust, where she has a tendency to do Superman-esque bullrushes and basically just punch the shit out of people with raw strength.

Some of Jessica's more recent showings of strength and striking power:

The Pulse #7 (2005)

Puts her fist through the hood of a car with a casual punch.

Smashes up the side of a truck and incaps a Skrull at the same time.

New Avengers Vol. 2 #2 (2010)
New Avengers Vol. 2 #2 (2010)

Knocks back a heavily enhanced Luke Cage with a punch.

It is also worth noting that this increased level of strength seen at the time of New Avengers isn't just the PIS Bendis-force at work. Alias made it very clear that Jessica was at a low point for her powers during that story which can clearly be seen by her superior feats shown in flashbacks during that book.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2
Alias #23 (2003)

After just discovering her powers Jessica was strong enough to push over a tree and casually lift a bicycle with one hand.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2
Alias #23 (2003)

Not long afterward she one-shot Scorpion who has fought Spider-Man and given him trouble.

As Jewel she was even better, and demonstrated a scary level of strength and resilience when bloodlusted via Purple Man.

Alias #25 (2003)
Alias #25 (2003)

Picks up and throws a whole police car.

This is the level of what she's capable when really pushed.

Overpowers a group of demons that in numbers were overwhelming Luke Cage and even the Thing.

She later saved the sorry asses of Luke Cage and Iron Fist from a gang of demons they were struggling with.

...But that's not the least of it, because the next time these two meet Jessica casually one-shots her while sitting on the toilet.

Defenders #2 (2017)
Defenders #2 (2017)

Gave Diamondback a black eye with one punch and physically restrained him, despite his newly-gained, super-powerful amp (enough to match a blow from Iron Fist).

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2
Defenders #4 (2017)

She then went on to absolutely whoop his ass and overwhelm him with her strength, bloodying him again. This is the same Diamondback who, in the very same fight, tanked an Iron Fist and kept fighting afterward. Jessica easily put in her fair share of hurt into Diamondback in order for Danny to beat him; they took him down together with equal effort. (Jessica's beating is presumably the reason Danny was able to suddenly beat him despite getting beaten down moments earlier.)

Secret Warriors #4 (2017)
Secret Warriors #4 (2017)

Visibly hurt and stunned Tiger Shark with a punch.

Defenders #9 (2018)

Fought evenly with and even got a clear upper hand on Moonstone in hand-to-hand combat.

Jessica Jones #6 (2017)

She also stomped Doc Ock as Jewel.

Durability:

Jessica is honestly a bit of a wuss when it comes to durability; her strength is certainly her more impressive trait. That said Jessica has herself stated that she has superhuman durability and she can certainly survive attacks that would kill an ordinary person.

The Pulse #14 (2006)
The Pulse #14 (2006)

She's tougher than she looks.

Jessica walked off a bullet wound without getting medical attention. She was "mostly fine", according to Daredevil.

Also tanked another indirect blast that blew out an apartment building.

Said attack she was also there for, and not injured during.

Said Luke's strength was giving Captain Marvel, the Thing, Iron Fist and Wolverine all trouble at the same time, so needless to say he was hitting really hard at the time.

Casually blocked a blow from Thunderball's wrecking ball.

Defenders #9 (2018)
Defenders #9 (2018)

Fights evenly with Moonstone and takes at least one direct punch (on-panel, almost certainly more over a prolonged fight that occurs mostly off-panel) with no lasting damage. That's a former Captain Marvel!

Daredevil Vol. 2 #48 (2003)
Daredevil Vol. 2 #48 (2003)

Tanks being burned by Typhoid Mary... and then being hit by a car.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2
Jessica Jones #18 (2018)

Tanks being punted out of a building by the Armadillo.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2
Defenders #3 (2017)

Tanks the crash after being in a car that was swatted aside by a new, super-strong Diamondback, with no damage.

Defenders #4 (2017)
Defenders #4 (2017)

Also tanks being tossed through a window by Diamondback and merely complains about having glass in her hair.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3
Alias #26 (2003)

She took both a blast from Iron Man's repulsors and an enraged punch from Vision (she had just clocked Scarlet Witch in the face), one after the other, and survived.

Alias #26 (2003)
Alias #26 (2003)

It is worth noting that this critically injured her, though, so she certainly cannot stand up to this kind of damage in general.

Speed/Mobility:

First off, Jessica can fly, and currently has pretty much total control of this ability. Initially she had very weak control of this ability, and in Alias she basically denied that she could fly at all because she had trouble landing. As Jewel, though, she had basically normal superhero flight, and in New Avengers and elsewhere she has regained that control.

Edit (2/15/2018): As of the most recent issue of Jessica Jones (issue 16) Jessica seems to be somewhat rusty with her flight again; this may be something of an inconsistency since she seems to describe it as something she has never been good at (certainly not true considering the New Avengers days) but it does seem to line up with her other most recent portrayal in Defenders given that to date I don't believe she has flown at all in that title.

It is also worth noting that while her flight speed is faster than her ground speed, she is fast on the ground, too, and she also has some good reaction feats to back all this up.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2
Alias #4 (2002)

Some casual and precise flight even while out of practice.

Alias #8 (2002)

Jessica is fast enough even on the ground to casually catch up to a man with a 20-foot lead who is already at full sprint.

Fast and evasive enough to briefly evade gunfire from a robber.

Alias #25 (2003)

Casually creates a blur-streak behind her while in flight around the city.

Tags Green Goblin out of midair fast enough to steal his glider.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3
Amazing Spider-Man #653/#654 (2011)

Can fly fast and accurately enough to keep up with even Captain Marvel during a combat situation. (Also held her own against numerous Spider Slayer robots, as a strength/skill feat.)

Alias #26 (2003)

Narrowly dodges a blow from Thor Slowdinson.

Bullrushes and clocks Scarlet Witch in the face before she can react.

Alias #20 (2003)

Hits Spider-Woman before she can react.

Mighty Avengers Vol. 2 #5 (2013)
Mighty Avengers Vol. 2 #5 (2013)

Wallops Ock-Spider-Man in the face before he can react even with his spider-sense. It's practically stated on-panel here that she outsped the spider-sense considering he bragged about it literally one sentence earlier, so this one's hard to argue against. (This also is a pretty good strength feat btw.)

Jessica Jones #3 (2017)
Jessica Jones #3 (2017)

Evades a punch from Spot, who fights with portals and is essentially a teleporter (and has repeatedly tagged Spider-Man using this method).

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2
Jessica Jones #4 (2016)

Effortlessly tags and pins down Frog-Man, another Spider-Man villain (though admittedly a bit of a joke one). Still, it also serves as a decent strength showing.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4
Daredevil Vol. 2 #48 (2003)

Keeps up with Typhoid Mary in a fight, tagging her repeatedly and dodging a lethal blow at close range.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3
Defenders #4 (2017)

Repeatedly tags and outspeeds Diamondback despite him demonstrating the speed and skill to tag and keep up with Iron Fist in a fight only moments prior.

Jessica Jones #8 (2017)
Jessica Jones #8 (2017)

Dodges close-range gunfire from (the Life-Model Decoy of) S.H.I.E.L.D. director Maria Hill without much effort.

At the end of the day, Jessica is pretty unimpressive for a Marvel superhero, but her high strength and flight still makes her a serious contender, kind of like a street-level Superman. She is pretty easy to underestimate which is usually results in pain for the people that cross her.

She doesn't fight often, but honestly she has a pretty good track record when she does. I think she is worth talking about more, and hopefully this respect thread has helped give her a little less obscurity.

Thanks for reading, all!

For those of you that haven't checked yet, by the way, Jessica's newest feats from Defenders are demonstrably on the physical level of Iron Fist in speed and strength.

3—Jessica says she can stop a “slow-moving” car

3—A guy from the house attacks her with a bat. She grabs the bat and puts him in a sleeper hold. Another apartment guy attacks with a knife, she beats him down by a kick against the wall. Finally a woman attacks and she KOs her by tossing her against the wall.

4—Jessica rips a padlock off a thick chain, breaking the chain.

4—Jessica throws the gun through the wall, so there’s a small gun-size hole in the wall (drywall), which probably requires it to be moving pretty fast to make so small a hole. She tosses a mattress against a wall.

4—She lifts a metal radiator and throws it through some closed doors into another room.

4—She reflexively smacks a (thick) glass wall in the lawyer’s office and cracks it.

10-Tosses one of the guys from the support group into a wall oneshotting him

10—Jessica jumps up to a pipe at the top of a restaurant, maybe 15-20’, and rips it out of the ceiling after several kicks at the ceiling/continuously pulling—i.e. it was a challenge to pull out.

11—Jessica weaken from broken ribs lung into her kidney she fights Nuke , on drugs. She holds a chair against him to hold him to the wall (the legs of the chair put holes in the wall as more easily seen in the next episode); he manages to get out although I think not from direct pressure.

11—She kicks a desk across the room (sliding on floor), knocking him over.

11—They struggle over a gun, seeming to have reasonably similar strength in doing so, with her having a bit of an edge.

"Durability"

1—Bangs Luke Cage and isn’t hurt when he thinks he might have hurt her.

3—Jessica gets two cuts/bruises in her face from falling down the (sharp glass) stairs from the first guy.

4—Jessica is clipped in the shoulder by a bullet, and is hurt, seemingly like anyone would be.But walks of off just fine.

5—Jessica and Nuke fight several bodyguards—6 or 8?—and lose; she basically is beaten by undergoing continual tasing, at least 20 times or more. She is down, but not knocked out. In comparison, one taze KOed Patsy, and Nuke was tased but not KOd. Nuke fought a few bodyguards and KOd one.

6—Jessica digs through the dirt and rocks with her hands, which get bloody.

10—She is immune to Kilgrave’s powers.

10—Robyn (twin) knocks Jessica out for few minutes who was sleep deprived by hitting her on the head with a 2x4 from behind twice.

10—Trish bites Jessica when she’s supposed to put the bullet in her head and Jessica feels it.

10—Jess, back in the day, wanted to escape Kilgrave and considered jumping off a high-rise, which it generally seemed like she was going to do.She said it was like "Prying fungus from a window" to get Kilgrave out of her head. So it's safe to say she would survive the fall from a building stories up

11—Jess is hit by a speeding truck that later she says didn’t brake at all. It dents the front, and no longer functioning as it was smoking really bad, she was knocked down and stunned but she is able to get up and stumble off. She has suffered from broken ribs lunged into her kidney.

11—She says she heals faster than normal people.

11—Jessica weaken from Broken ribs lunged into her kidney fights Nuke on drugs. He knocks her into a bookcase. He takes another pill and throws her straight through the wall. She gets up pretty fine from that.

11—They trade blows and slams against the wall. He says “any other day you would have won this” but the ribs are holding her back. He kicks her in the ribs and puts her in a sleeper. Patsy shows up and the get away, but Jessica says she can’t beat him, she’s too hurt.

12—Bloodlust Luke and Jessica fight. He hits her some distance away. He pulls off and hits her into some stuff. She seems fine with these hits other than holding her broken ribs. They trade blows.

12—She hides and gets ready to hit him with some metal but Luke grabs her through a wall (drywall) and pulls her through.

12—Jessica tears off a cop car door and holds it as a shield, Luke punches through the glass and then repeatedly punches the door, not making a hole although denting it, then grabs it and tosses it. She gets in the car and he drags her out. Overall, she seems much more durable to damage here than when hit by Robyn’s 2x4 twice.(But it was head trauma)

13—A doctor slashes Jessica’s leg with a scalpel, pretty deep, but she basically ignores it.

Fighting Skill

2—Jessica and Luke beat up maybe 5 rugby players

3—Nuke gets back up again after she grabs him from the ledge, and she takes him down again quickly. Then a guy from the house attacks her with a bat. She grabs the bat and puts him in a sleeper hold. Another apartment guy attacks with a knife, she beats him down by a kick against the wall. Finally a woman attacks and she KOs her by tossing her against the wall.

5—She beats up two muggers, throwing one through a door of a garage/shack.

5—Jessica and Nuke fight several bodyguards—6 or 8?—and lose; she basically is beaten by undergoing continual tasing, at least 20. She is down, but not knocked out. In comparison, one taze KOed Patsy, and Nuke was tased but not KOd. Nuke fought a few bodyguards and KOd one.

6—She and Luke fight maybe 6 thugs and win. It takes a while though, for both of them—the guys keep getting back up. Otherwise they do a lot of typical throwing around.

8—Jessica wrestles with Nuke and they both manage to slip in and out of each others’ holds

11—Jessica and Nuke, on drugs, fight. She holds a chair against him to hold him to the wall (the legs of the chair put holes in the wall as more easily seen in the next episode);he manages to get out by kicking at her leg. He shoots and misses. She kicks a desk across the room (sliding on floor) and knocks him over. They struggle over a gun, seeming to have reasonably similar strength in doing so, with her having a bit of an edge while weaken. He slams her into a book shelf in the wall. He takes another pill and throws her straight through the wall. She gets up, They trade blows and slams against the wall. He says “any other day you would have won this” but the ribs are holding her back. He kicks her in the ribs and puts her in a sleeper. Patsy shows up and hits him in the head with a fire extinguisher, which he doesn’t seem too hurt by. They go into the bathroom and he can’t open the door when Trish and Jessica are holding it back, even when he’s kicking it or taking running starts. He breaks a hole in the standard wood door with a metal pipe only after several hits. Jessica says she can’t beat him, she’s too hurt. He throws his bottle of blues through the window, breaking the glass. Trish takes a red and fights Nuke, stabbing him in the arm, which he doesn’t seem to feel. Finally Jessica punches him sending him flying into the AC breaking the table, than she grabs him and hits his head into the AC,after that she back hands him sending him flying into the cabinets crashing down and finally she grabs him and smashes his head into the refrigerator several times hard and collapses the fridge on him. He is KOed for several hours. The drugs he took he didn't feel any pain so this very impressive not to mention he's been a Officer for 8 years and has tactical military training.

12—Luke and Jessica fight. He hits her some distance away. Luke takes a swing at her but she grabs it with two hands and holds his hand back. Then he pulls off and hits her into some stuff. She seems fine with these hits other than holding her broken ribs. She throws chairs and he defects them. She knocks over a cabinet and he one-hands it off several feet away. He punches a hole in a brick wall and gets his hand stuck. While he’s stuck she hits and kicks him and hits his head into the wall. She tries to jump off but he catches her (looks more like flying than jumping Im not sure). They trade blows. She knocks some speakers on him and it takes a bit for him to get free. She hides and gets ready to hit him with some metal but Luke grabs her through a wall (drywall) and pulls her through. She argues that he doesn’t want to hurt him and while he doesn’t respond, it looks like he agrees, and he seems to start swinging wild, not really trying to hit, and punches through a drywall wall. She gets a number of hits in to no avail. She grabs him and pushes him through the drywall, he may be a bit stunned. A cop goes in and Luke tosses him out a decent distance and speed. Jessica tears off the cop car door and holds it as a shield, Luke punches through the glass and then repeatedly punches the door, not making a hole although denting it, then grabs it and tosses it. She gets in the car and he drags her out. Jessica shoots him in the chin with a shotgun, which knocks him out.

"Flying/Jumping"

1—Jumps to a second or third floor fire escape.

1–She gets to the outside ledge of Patty’s penthouse by unknown means, presumably jumping and climbing.

3—Jessica says she can’t fly, but jumps and falls down known as guided falling as she would say

4—She jumps on top of a dumpster.

4—She jumps an unknown number of stories to the ledge of a building.

4—She gets to the outside ledge of Patty’s penthouse by unknown means, presumably jumping and climbing.

7—She jumps from subway tracks to the platform.

8—She jumps at the end, seemingly really flying this time—goes out of sight of the guys she’s near, although we don’t see it. Is carrying Kilgrave while she does it. One of Simmons guys quotes "Did she just fly?"

10—Jessica jumps up to a pipe at the top of a restaurant, maybe 15-20’

10—Jess, back in the day, wanted to escape Kilgrave and considered jumping off a high-rise, which it generally seemed like she was going to do but couldn't shake Kilgraves control in time.

12—Jessica jumps down from a balcony to the main floor of the club, maybe 40-50’, with no problem.

12—While fighting Luke, she tries to jump/fly off but he catches her (looks more like flying than jumping).

13—Jessica jumps the length of a long building’s hall, maybe 100’ or more (starting from a balcony).

"Speed/Reaction/Agility"

5—She says she can run a mile in under 4 minutes, compared to Nuke’s 6 minutes

7-She jumps out of the way of a close speeding train

She has more speed feats but I got too lazy.Hopefully you can feel in the blanks with that in her Defender's feat.

Another speed feat is when she was chasing Dr.Kurato she kept up with him just seconds behind him, even with a full head start.I can't think of what episode that was,I think 4

Have you ever thought about it?

Couple more neat durability feats from the newest issue of JJ (#12). Plus that big-ass reveal/foreshadowing at the end.

Major recommendation if I haven't emphasized that enough already.

Great respect thread.

One of the most detailed I've ever seen.

Nice, could you try one for maybe Luke Cage?

@danieldaripper: I'm sure there has to be a solid Luke Cage respect thread out there already. But he also has a way longer history and it would be a lot more work to compile a comprehensive respect thread for him.

@amendment50: Maybe Diamondback, he beat Luke pretty bad in the Defenders comic with that sprinkle dust so you could possibly add that.

@danieldaripper: Yeah I guess I could throw together a Diamondback respect thread if I got the time. Would be pretty short though; as I understand he died like 1 or 2 issues after Luke Cage's first appearance and wasn't seen again until Defenders vol. 5 this year.

@amendment50: That's why I suggested it to you, he doesn't have as long of a history as Luke Cage.

Updated with what (disappointingly!) seems to be a recent nerf for Jessica, specifically that she is apparently not so adept at flying anymore.

Updated with one final, bizarrely good feat for Jessica (and the other Defenders as well) from the finale of the Defenders run. Was a ride; not the best written comic in the world but a fun time nevertheless. I really liked how prominently Jessica featured throughout, felt almost like the main character of the last issue here.

@amendment50: Bump.

You should add some of the Jessica Jones: Purple Daughter series feats. Yes, it’s relatively new, but hey, good to know where Jessica stands currently.
