I put this together for my CaV against Gintoki Sakata but a lot of it's pretty generally applicable so I figured I may as well turn it into a full-fledged RT and help pad out my blog more.
I imagine that a lot of people are curious about Jessica's general power level in the comics after the Netflix show, and it would be nice to have a place to direct people, so without further ado...
Be warned about language. Jessica likes four-letter words and I already got permission from the mods to give a general warning rather than censor it all, so keep that in mind going forward.
Jessica Jones, wife of Luke Cage and mother of Danielle, is a private investigator, former superhero and member of the New Avengers. Following the car accident that killed her family, Jessica developed superpowers that gave her strength, speed and stamina well above any average person. While in her early appearances she was severely out of practice and out of shape, at her best Jessica has shown to have strength on the level of super soldiers and has a number of standout feats that allow her to compensate for a general lack of skill.
Overall, Jessica's real foe has never really been the forces of evil- more like the forces of shitty New York life in a world full of crazy-ass superheroes. Jessica has never really been the hero type and tends to shy away from fights, but more recently her experiences alongside her husband Luke Cage have given her a lot more experience and training at using her superpowers, bringing her physicals back to her peak and giving her control over her ability to fly again... although she got pretty rusty during a stint of prison and is pretty much disassociated from the Avengers. So she's not exactly at her prime right now...
All the same, Jessica has threatened Wolverine to his face, bitch-slapped Spider-Man and constantly intimidates the hell out of Luke Cage. All in all she is one tough lady, and not someone you want to piss off.
Raw strength is Jessica's best asset by a pretty wide margin in general, especially based on her more recent showings. Initially, during Alias (where she debuted) she had some trouble even with ordinary humans and embarrassed herself even against a regular convenience store robber (in an absolutely great scene I might add).
That said, Jessica is not ordinary human level- not even peak human level based on her best feats. She has come far and improved a lot since her early days.
And even then, from Alias, which has her lowest showings:
Jessica easily punks Man Mountain Marko- a heavily enhanced superhuman that has traded blows with Spider-Man and Luke Cage- even though he got the drop on her. (And this is during Alias, where she is far from her prime!)
Tears through a chain-link fence with her bare hands.
Puts a man's head through a TV.
And one-shots Spider-woman (Jessica Drew).
Her feats have only gotten better with time, and she is especially dangerous with bloodlust, where she has a tendency to do Superman-esque bullrushes and basically just punch the shit out of people with raw strength.
Some of Jessica's more recent showings of strength and striking power:
Puts her fist through the hood of a car with a casual punch.
Casually tears through thin steel.
Fucks up a Doombot that was endangering Luke Cage.
Hurts Kang with a kick and disarms him.
Hurts a giant (Atlas) with a punch, and tosses another one (Goliath) to the ground during a battle with the Revengers.
Smashes up the side of a truck and incaps a Skrull at the same time.
Knocks back a heavily enhanced Luke Cage with a punch.
It is also worth noting that this increased level of strength seen at the time of New Avengers isn't just the PIS Bendis-force at work. Alias made it very clear that Jessica was at a low point for her powers during that story which can clearly be seen by her superior feats shown in flashbacks during that book.
After just discovering her powers Jessica was strong enough to push over a tree and casually lift a bicycle with one hand.
Not long afterward she one-shot Scorpion who has fought Spider-Man and given him trouble.
As Jewel she was even better, and demonstrated a scary level of strength and resilience when bloodlusted via Purple Man.
Picks up and throws a whole police car.
This is the level of what she's capable when really pushed.
Overpowers a group of demons that in numbers were overwhelming Luke Cage and even the Thing.
A full-strength punch created a large shockwave that one-shot a number of them and saved Luke's life.
She later saved the sorry asses of Luke Cage and Iron Fist from a gang of demons they were struggling with.
Had Green Goblin at her mercy until he was rescued by his glider. Even Spider-Man was impressed by that.
Overpowers Nitro and throws him so far away that his explosion is out of range to do serious damage to her or the other Defenders (considering that this explosion dwarfs buildings, that's hundreds of feet away at least).
Overpowers Misty Knight's arm and surprises her with her strength.
Briefly fights on par with and pummels Typhoid Mary.
...But that's not the least of it, because the next time these two meet Jessica casually one-shots her while sitting on the toilet.
Gave Diamondback a black eye with one punch and physically restrained him, despite his newly-gained, super-powerful amp (enough to match a blow from Iron Fist).
She then went on to absolutely whoop his ass and overwhelm him with her strength, bloodying him again. This is the same Diamondback who, in the very same fight, tanked an Iron Fist and kept fighting afterward. Jessica easily put in her fair share of hurt into Diamondback in order for Danny to beat him; they took him down together with equal effort. (Jessica's beating is presumably the reason Danny was able to suddenly beat him despite getting beaten down moments earlier.)
Visibly hurt and stunned Tiger Shark with a punch.
Fought evenly with and even got a clear upper hand on Moonstone in hand-to-hand combat.
She also stomped Doc Ock as Jewel.
Jessica is honestly a bit of a wuss when it comes to durability; her strength is certainly her more impressive trait. That said Jessica has herself stated that she has superhuman durability and she can certainly survive attacks that would kill an ordinary person.
She's tougher than she looks.
During her brief, edgy, emotionally-charged stint as Knightress (still inexperienced here) she tanked a knife in the back and fought right through it.
Jessica walked off a bullet wound without getting medical attention. She was "mostly fine", according to Daredevil.
In an interesting feat of resistance, Jessica resisted the effects of tranq darts specially designed by SHIELD to scramble memories.
She tanked a blast that knocked back Captain America and Iron Man and was only scratched up.
She tanked an explosion that blew away most of a building with no injury.
She survived an indirect blast that blew the top half of a building to smithereens and critically injured Luke Cage.
Also tanked another indirect blast that blew out an apartment building.
Tanked the direct explosion of a building-sized robot, which sent her smashing into a building (tearing it up), again without injury.
Directly tanked an explosion that blew out her whole apartment. Got a black eye but stayed conscious and unharmed; didn't even bother to get medical attention.
Fuckin' tanked this shit. (Honestly forget about Jessica here; fucking Daredevil tanked this!?)
She took a punch from a man hopped up on MGH (mutant growth hormone- gives ordinary people superpowers) without any lasting injury (while not at her prime).
She can drop the height of a building with no issue.
She tanked a fall from the top of a building into a van with no injury.
She even took a fall into the water from the NYC skyline without any injury at all.
Tanked having a pile of rubble thrown on her by Atlas- a giant that could tear through the Avengers mansion with his bare hands.
Said attack she was also there for, and not injured during.
She tanked a punch from a magic-amped Luke Cage that knocked her dozens of feet away, and returned without injury.
Said Luke's strength was giving Captain Marvel, the Thing, Iron Fist and Wolverine all trouble at the same time, so needless to say he was hitting really hard at the time.
Casually blocked a blow from Thunderball's wrecking ball.
Tanks multiple punches from the Spider-Man villain Spot while sustaining minimal damage.
Fights evenly with Moonstone and takes at least one direct punch (on-panel, almost certainly more over a prolonged fight that occurs mostly off-panel) with no lasting damage. That's a former Captain Marvel!
Tanks being burned by Typhoid Mary... and then being hit by a car.
Tanks being punted out of a building by the Armadillo.
Tanks the crash after being in a car that was swatted aside by a new, super-strong Diamondback, with no damage.
Also tanks being tossed through a window by Diamondback and merely complains about having glass in her hair.
She took both a blast from Iron Man's repulsors and an enraged punch from Vision (she had just clocked Scarlet Witch in the face), one after the other, and survived.
It is worth noting that this critically injured her, though, so she certainly cannot stand up to this kind of damage in general.
First off, Jessica can fly, and currently has pretty much total control of this ability. Initially she had very weak control of this ability, and in Alias she basically denied that she could fly at all because she had trouble landing. As Jewel, though, she had basically normal superhero flight, and in New Avengers and elsewhere she has regained that control.
Edit (2/15/2018): As of the most recent issue of Jessica Jones (issue 16) Jessica seems to be somewhat rusty with her flight again; this may be something of an inconsistency since she seems to describe it as something she has never been good at (certainly not true considering the New Avengers days) but it does seem to line up with her other most recent portrayal in Defenders given that to date I don't believe she has flown at all in that title.
It is also worth noting that while her flight speed is faster than her ground speed, she is fast on the ground, too, and she also has some good reaction feats to back all this up.
Some casual and precise flight even while out of practice.
Jessica is fast enough even on the ground to casually catch up to a man with a 20-foot lead who is already at full sprint.
Fast and evasive enough to briefly evade gunfire from a robber.
Casually creates a blur-streak behind her while in flight around the city.
Tags Green Goblin out of midair fast enough to steal his glider.
Can fly fast and accurately enough to keep up with even Captain Marvel during a combat situation. (Also held her own against numerous Spider Slayer robots, as a strength/skill feat.)
Narrowly dodges a blow from Thor
Bullrushes and clocks Scarlet Witch in the face before she can react.
Hits Spider-Woman before she can react.
Wallops Ock-Spider-Man in the face before he can react even with his spider-sense. It's practically stated on-panel here that she outsped the spider-sense considering he bragged about it literally one sentence earlier, so this one's hard to argue against. (This also is a pretty good strength feat btw.)
Evades a punch from Spot, who fights with portals and is essentially a teleporter (and has repeatedly tagged Spider-Man using this method).
Effortlessly tags and pins down Frog-Man, another Spider-Man villain (though admittedly a bit of a joke one). Still, it also serves as a decent strength showing.
Keeps up with Typhoid Mary in a fight, tagging her repeatedly and dodging a lethal blow at close range.
Repeatedly tags and outspeeds Diamondback despite him demonstrating the speed and skill to tag and keep up with Iron Fist in a fight only moments prior.
Dodges close-range gunfire from (the Life-Model Decoy of) S.H.I.E.L.D. director Maria Hill without much effort.
At the end of the day, Jessica is pretty unimpressive for a Marvel superhero, but her high strength and flight still makes her a serious contender, kind of like a street-level Superman. She is pretty easy to underestimate which is usually results in pain for the people that cross her.
She doesn't fight often, but honestly she has a pretty good track record when she does. I think she is worth talking about more, and hopefully this respect thread has helped give her a little less obscurity.
Thanks for reading, all!
