if you need to cry 2

This book was capable of dropping me to my knees and sobbing right there along with Selina Kyle. It's so well done in writing and art presentation that it plays like a Lifetime movie. This poor tortured woman has to make the most difficult of her life. Through 99% of it she's emotionally battered and soaked with her own tears. Selina seeks out help from Bruce Wayne to push the adoption through so that it is untraceable. Then she calls upon Zatanna to undo her previous "Make Catwoman a Good Crime...

I do agree with the above that review that Hughie is Simon Pegg. That may be because Mr. Pegg actually had something to do with the publication but I forget what specifically. And I may be the only comics fan that has not yet read Garth Ennis' previous works like Preacher - yes, they are in my hubby's collection so I'll get to them at some point but I'm barely treading water with the current haul. I only got issue 11 from this series but I did plenty of research. It was a Wildstorm title that go...

better than I expected 0

Ever since the stellar movie starring Brigitte Nielson and the Governator, I have not had much interest in anything Red Sonja beyond ogling posters and tattoos. I was sent this issue and began my research. There really is a die hard fan base for this woman! When I started finding image after image of Red Sonja tattoos, I figured this was something I shouldn't just pass judgment on without actually giving it a try. I was pleasantly surprised with this issue. Sonja is portrayed as a real warrior n...

it is what it is 0

Which is to say, Jungle Girl is just cheesecake. Frank Cho is a master of the female form and for that I respect his work. Plus, he's a nice guy that I got to hang with a bit in Baltimore. But Jungle Girl isn't going to be winning any awards this year other than "favorite pin up babe."Somehow I "mistakenly forgot" to pick up the preview and issue 1 even though I was helping collate them at the Dynamite booth. So all I have to go on is issue 2. Seems to be about a modern day pack of drug smuggler...

Give it a chance 1

The Alan Heinberg story arc which started a year ago had a really good premise but he just didn't pull it off the way fans would have wanted and then we had to wait months for the conclusion which came in the Annual. J Torres however, has touched upon the characters of Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl in emotional and feminine ways that even Jodi Picoult couldn't do. Not to mention he's a great guy and donating some signed books to an event I'm cohosting in NJ to raise money for our local women's sh...

It's Faith and she's captivating in this. 1

Faith was honestly not one of my favorite BtVS characters but this current story arc by Brian K. Vaughan has me so hooked on her every move. I want to know what she's thinking and what her next course of action will be. Ultimately, the heart of the story is about loyalty and friendship vs. the power-mongering Lady Genevieve. Faith disguises herself as an aristocrat and pulls it off beautifully with her "kiss my a" attitude. She's so deep undercover that Genevieve feels the need to explain where ...

so worth it 0

I wouldn't say that Bizarro is the opposite of Superman; that part of the essence of Bizarro may seem complicated but as in the cartoons, Bizarro is rather simple to figure out. He just wants to be as accepted as Superman; he believes all of his actions are for the good. The flashback of Bizarro throwing a little girl off a building is so chilling; don't worry she is saved by the real Big Blue. However, Bizarro plays with the flowers and tosses them exclaiming how he just wanted to help the littl...

Surprisingly good! 0

I wasn't sure if this was going to be just a hyped book marketed to the 18-35 crowd the same way as Hollywood movie just because of Gerard Way's rock n' roll success. I had read several articles about his dreams of bringing this to fruition and his passion impressed me.The artwork is stylized with a hint of childish likeness as if a Saturday morning cartoon storyboard was laid in front of you. Lovely heavy inking gives a goth's touch without being uber darkedy-dark-vampy. And we all know Dave St...

I agree with everything G-Man said in his review. This is worth taking the time and money to enjoy. A retailer told me, it's just a cheap knock-off of Mouse Guard but I really wanted to give this book a shot and I'm glad I did. That guy was wrong. It would benefit readers to think of the various "mice" books more like the superhero genre: you have Captain America and you have Superman – heroes from different creators; both in costume; both invaluable icons to our culture; and both very distinct ...

Still waiting.... 0

Everyone else seems really excited about this new arc. I'm giving it 4 stars because it is strong writing with great visual representation. That being said, however, I'm still waiting for this story to move itself along. I feel like I bought a comic for essentially one scene - Peter begging Tony for financial help for Aunt May. There were a couple of other components to the plot but they felt very over-shadowed. If there isn't any action after the JMS run, I'll probably drop this book from my pu...

good start for BKV 1

Brian K. Vaughan has taken the scripting for BtVS for Joss Whedon. I actually preferred less "buffyspeak" which I find easier to hear on the show then to read in the comics, not to mention that the gang is supposed to be maturing. Joss usually uses way too much of it practically requiring an adult-to-modern-teen decoder ring. The Xander crush on Buffy is yet again hinted at. Isn't that getting old? Their entire part could have been left out of the episode unless it actually some kind of bearing o...

best written so far in this series 2

The Wonder Woman series has been hit or miss since it's new launch. We're up to issue #12 and after every writer took a shot at the book and bailed out, I'm so happy that J. Torres is at the helm. It not only proves that men are capable of crafting a WW story but also that there's some hope left for this line. Fans are tired of waiting for a movie and tired of the Amazon Princess taking second fiddle to Superman. It's very much time for Diana of Themyscira to shine. Ok, so you're not a rabid fan...

I'll be adding this to my list 2

Once JMS is finished with Spider-Man - or the subscription becomes too overbearing with 3 per month - I think this Batman Detective series will be an A+ replacement. I just picked up this issue and remembered why I love Batman so much. First of all there's the amazing art! The covers have been enough to really get my attention as they sit on the shelves. Last month I even thought of buying an issue but I put it back figuring - Jeez, I still have to finish 52! But ok, this month I saw the Scarecr...

You should be reading this 0

Here's the backstory behind this series: Warren Ellis was dared by a friend to write a superhero book, a zombie book, and there was one other thing which I can't recall atm. He tackled the zombie book with Black Gas. Black Summer is his superhero book. The fact that these are all brand new characters makes this a pretty amazing plot. The character themselves are fantastic in design. I've tried to detail them as much as possible in their entries but it's hard since I have to wait for each issue ...

Back in Grey not Black 0

I've been reading "Amazing" for about a year now and it's just not as amazing as the rabid fanboys make it out to be. I do enjoy it but I'm at the point where I don't want to spend my cash on it anymore. I expected a lot more from the Back in Black mini. Peter doesn't get any more dark and creepy than a high school goth girl. I really wanted to see him driven over the edge, not just up to it like he did when he pummeled Kingpin (decent scene). In this issue, having Peter never appear as Spider-M...

Not good 1

The art is really the only good thing about this book. Now let me just say, I've never read Lobo despite having a large box full of them next to me. And I love Batman. This is Batman in space. It's just not the same. It's not Batman fighting bad guys in Gotham. It's just full of weird shit.If the story was just Lobo then I'd go along with it. Women are being infected, or rather possessed, by something that makes them crazier than the Joker with non-stop urges to kill and tear off their clothes. ...

a different look at John 0

The way I see it, this issue is where John Winchester makes that turn from "good guy" we can sympathize with to "anti-hero" (I term I hate to use). John has made his choice: he will hunt down and kill any being that stands in the way of his quest to find out what exactly happened to his wife Mary and of course, be sure to kill the demon that is responsible. In no. 4, we see two very opposing sides to John Winchester, his yin and yang. It shows us just how his heart is so filled with pure love an...

Part 3 of the Sinestro Corps War is in the Green Lantern Corps title, issue #14. This is a great introduction to the history of Korugar, the home planet of Sinestro which is now under the protection of a new Green Lantern. Doctor Soranik Natu has potential but she seems afraid to take on the responsibility of even being a Green Lantern no less being the protector of Sinestro’s former sector, 1417. It takes a very strong willed Lantern to take this assignment and this woman just didn’t impress me...

new to GLC - loved this 1

My childhood memories of The Green Lantern are slim. I only remember one GL in the Justice League. So for most of my life, I was under the impression there was one guy named Green Lantern. Later on in life someone asked me who my favorite Green Lantern was and I was dumbfounded. My reaction, "There was more than one? I only know of one guy in the League." Oooo, lots of geek demerits on that one. So I began talking to people about the GLC whenever I see someone in the logo t-shirt (I have one of ...

still building but very intriguing 0

==SPOILERS==This is issue #1, Chapter 2: Nothing but Storms. This review does contain spoilers. There’s a lot of violence and strong language in the “Black Summer” series. If you like political intrigue, particularly American politics, then you’ll want to get the 2 issues out so far to see if it’s something you’ll enjoy. Part of what makes this interesting is that the creator Warren Ellis is a Brit but he spends a lot of time in the states. I will say that so far, in the conflict presented, thi...

not bad 0

I was tempted to edit the entry and remove "Buffy" from the list of characters appearing in this issue because Buffy Summers is not actually in this at all. Giles (I believe that's him) and many other unnamed slayers are in the book. The lead character is in fact, never named, because that's the point of the plot. She gives up her identity to go into an underworld as Buffy Summers the Vampire/Demon Slayer and she has no trace of herself visible. She acts like Buffy and looks like Buffy. If you l...

This creative team actually seems to better understand the Amazon and DC mythology. This is subtitled "Hubris part 1 of 2" issue 11 of the series. This review does contain spoilers. There’s a lot more action at the beginning with other heroes including Star Girl, Mr. Terrific, Black Canary and Wildcat as they have to take on Circe’s animorphed soldiers and try to stop the launch sequence of the nuclear missile. Other heroes like Green Lantern, Superman and Hawkman appear quickly in the middle. Bu...

Good reveals 0

The story is really getting fleshed out in issue no. 4 of Amazons Attack!. The heroes are disagreeing with each other on which battlefronts need attention most and who should be where; the young and naive Wonder Girl and Supergirl take off on their own causing a large catastrophe; nothing goes right for Superman; and Batman and Oracle make a big discovery. For three issues the superheroes of the Justice League believed they were only fighting the Themyscirians. The comic cuts to a great scene of ...

Issue #10 - it's a buy 0

I'm impressed with the progressive improvements of this book, in particular the writing; the art has always been great. Picoult is a few issues in by now as the script lead and there seemed to be a slight transition but with Issue #10, the dialog and personal actions of Diana and her mother really have taken a much better shape.I always drool over the covers by the Dodson but this is the first issue where I felt the interiors rocked hard and could equal the cover. Many kudos to Paco Diaz for thi...

Was there Acceptance by Tony? Where? 0

So this is supposed to be the final stage of bereavement over the death of Cap. And it's supposed to be "Iron Man" as it says on the cover. Then...(spoilers)... Tony completely chokes at the memorial service and walks away leaving The Falcon to deliver a magnificent speech. I'm glad Falcon did it because Tony Stark just grinds my gears the wrong way. The Falcon gave a beautiful tribute and as the other reviewers have said, the artwork accompanying it was stellar all the way from pencils to color...

not too late to buy and get caught up 0

We're up to Issue #3 in the Supernatural: Origins series. I'm definitely enjoying it so far as would anyone who is a fan of the show or shows like Buffy and Angel. It's a great way to get your dose of other-worldly evilness.Since this comic series is a prequel to the show, it's all about John Winchester's history. From the time of Mary's death, John has wanted to find her killer. His first lead is to go after the hellhound who left evidence behind when killing Mary's best friend. The hellhound t...

Here's a copy of my complete review for the fully released Issue #1 which includes the Preview pages. The Stan Lee script is beautifully written for any age audience. This is the story of how Matthew Atherton becomes Feedback and how he meets Sarah, the greatest love of his life. Before he gains his superpowers, Matt is a geek with the talent of fixing computers and video games and pretty much anything else electronic. When he brawls thugs, he gets beaten hard. Then Matt is hired to do the most in...

got some issues with this 0

It seems that although time is progressing, our beloved Slayer still seems as immature to me as ever. Luckily, she's not center-stage all that often which is kind of strange in and of itself.Willow is back and as we saw at the end of issue #2 but completely in issue #3, and so is one of her worst villains. The leader of the Trio, Warren, is back indeed and still without that ever important epidermal layer to protect him from things like the sun. In issue #4, yes I'm going to spoil, we learn that...

Amber's take on it and what her hubby thinks too 2

It just doesn't seem likely that Wolverine would lecture Spider-Man on the definition of "depression." I could see him following Spidey just to make sure he's ok but that whole conversation they had was just weird and hokey like the other editions have been. At least they're consistent in their hokiness. On the plus side, the flashback of how Cap saved Spidey one day as the current Spidey was fighting the Rhino was damn brilliant! As for the art, the heavily lined renditions weren't my particular ...

Overlooking the confusion wherever a shapeshifter fits into any story, the actual invasion aspect of this is moving along nicely. The Amazons hit the shores of the US in Issue 1 and begin their brutal attack on the historic monuments of the US including live people. Issue 2 is actually even better than #1.Black Canary, Batman, Green Lantern, and many other classics from JLU enter the scene for search & rescue only at this point. They're waiting to see where Diana fits into the picture. But s...

pretty good start for a new series 0

SPOILERSIssue #0 of Black Summer contains an essay by creator Warren Ellis explaining his motivation for The Seven Guns super team. Ellis takes a "Marvel Civil War" mentally and is allowed be more expressive with Avatar Press and brand-new characters that aren't subject to fan discord. In the beginning, the team anti-hero Tom Noir had felt that the human five senses were simply not enough. He and several other science intellects created enhancements giving them the super abilities. When Tom's gir...

my two cents 0

I disagree with the way some of the things are written up in the summary above. For example, when WW is being rescued by Nemesis she lets the lasso go and doesn't ask him if he can be trusted because she simply looks at him and knows she can. Also the enemy of my enemy that Circe was referring to is not WW but men, particularly of the US it would seem based on the certain destruction of Washington D.C. landmarks. As for my own review, I think it would be described as "entertaining." The fact that...

Amber's insight 0

I had no expectations going into the new arc but I was really hoping that for the first time, a female writer could do justice to Wonder Woman, one of my earliest childhood heroes. I have never read any of Picoult's novels but the reviews of her latest novel left me thinking she might WW very dark and somewhat Bat-ish, which I'd still read to see if I liked it. I'm willing to give anything a shot at this point.I was very surprised and impressed with Picoult's first issue of WW. I was not expecti...

Amber's Pick 0

When the Anita Blake series started, it felt very rushed and as a reader who has not read the novels, I was quite lost. As the series continues, the comic book writing gets better and the plot gets deeper. The new characters as introduced in #4 and #5 are making this series even more interesting. In #5, the plot speed calms down to a more "normal" pace. It's focused mainly on Anita's new human helper Philip who is a vampire junkie. People like Philip are known as "Freaks" because of their addict...
