On a side note---Red pickup truck, blue jeans, drinking before 5pm, Steve only needs a giant American Flag bumper stick to be even more painfully American than he already is.
@lvenger: I agree. Though I hate the SM/WW relationship, I think it's unrealistic for her just go "welp, I mean it was fun...". I would've liked her to at least mull over it a little more instead of jumping right back to Steve. I mean Rucka's Steve seems like an understanding enough man to wait to give her enough time to collect herself before looking for a rebound.
To be clearer, I don't mind her sort of getting back with Steve this "quickly", but I think them addressing her relationship with Superman could've offered a bit more character development on what love to her is.
I guess it comes down to I know SM/WW fans already hate this run to begin with, and I think they have some right to be a bit miffed about this somewhat disingenuous explanation of that relationship.
@nickosaurusrex: When she was created there were a dozen of Supermans and Batmans. Wonder Woman was the first of her kind. And the first to actually preach nonviolent ways of conflict resolution when Batman and Superman were still killing people on a whim. Also, you know those beloved psycho-social villains Batman has? Yeah Wonder Woman had those types of villains before Batman.
So lets get this straight. Batman and Superman started doing their no-kill code AFTER Wonder Woman. Batman's themes began going more psycho-social AFTER Wonder Woman.
Tell me again how she's only influential because she's a woman?
Its funny that he says this and then turns around and says "But its not important in the long run." I have to agree. Who cares who she's sleeping with? As long as the relationship serves a purpose other than "Ohhh look at me, she's sleeping with a woman now. Look how progressive I am."
People are making too much of a big deal out of this. You know that's true when assholes are threatening not to watch the movie unless they reshoot and do something asinine like putting Kate Kane in Steve Trevor's role, even though she has nothing to do with her mythos. Not to mention the "prove it" crowd who don't like subtext and want billboards plastered all over decent writing.
Honestly, because of the circus, I wish he said nothing.
I think Rucka addressed this in his Rebirth interview on how the lasso of truth will play a big part, because simply, an individual's truth may not always be the factual truth. It's just as biased and subject to perception as opinions and lies are.
@dshipp17: To be honest, in my head Wonder Woman would call him Steven or by his full name. Using full names instead of shortened nicknames is often used to show closeness and affection between two people. Like mothers calling their child William, instead of Will or Bill. Diana does the same thing with Cheetah with calling her by her full Barbara Ann, instead of Babs, or Barbara, or Ann.
Anyway, fun issue. Kinda wished it had been a bigger finale, but I'm guessing this was never meant to be a big bad for Wondy to defeat, or that important beyond setting things up for the future. My guess is the real big bad will be quickly revealed.
Personally, I'm giving Rucka as much slack as I give Tom King on Batman. So far King has paid off but it was a rocky start. I am aiming to see Rucka pay off. Rucka is one of those pay off writers like Johns and Snyder that it takes an issue or two for it to start rolling and then the pay off is great. And Rucka has probably getting used to writing full fledged graphic novels instead of issued comics that the pacing is probably more beneficial in trade.
Part of the pacing is the trade off timelines. We are used to titles shipping bimonthly on the DC side, but it feels like reading two different Wonder Woman storylines a month apart. I'm betting after Year One pacing will be much better.
