"Everyone except Akira. I have a special assignment for this special warrior,"

As the rest of the soldiers left, Akira obediently stays there and wipes some more tears from her eyes before she notices a circle of blue flame that is surrounding them, isolating the two women from anyone who might be watching. She the words 'special warrior' are so patronizing coming from Sasaki's lips, but there's nothing she can do about that but keep her head bowed. What would you know about honor? Akira thinks to herself.

Akira's feet have never ached so badly in her life. All she wants to do right now is sit down, but she doesn't dare. Instead, she remains in a kneeled position before the Fire Lord with her head bowed as she waits for what else the Fire Lord has to say.

When Sasaki tells Akira she wants her to be her spy, she has to struggle to hide her surprise. Then the implication if she can handle it is not lost on Akira. She'd have to be able to because if she couldn't, Fire Lord Sasaki would probably throw her in prison...or worse, kill her.

Akira bows her head to the floor, then raises herself, but still in that kneeling position, "Yes, I can handle it, Lord Sasaki. May I ask who my point of contact will be?" Sasaki didn't reveal that bit of information yet, so Akira asks because she needs to know who her contact will be so she can fulfill the Fire Lord's orders.

@malik_: @fallenprophet

Akira is alone, secluded in her room when she suddenly explodes in fury. By the time she is done, it looks like a hurricane went through her room and demolished everything along with tons of scorch marks on her walls, ceiling and floor. She’s lucky she didn’t burn down her entire home.

By the time she was done, she didn’t care how her room looked. Didn’t care if anyone saw or heard her. She takes a much needed bath, changes her clothes and eats something. Finally, Akira packs her things before she takes her leave of the place. A place she knows she will NEVER return to. After today, she never intends to return to the Fire Nation or be loyal to the Fire Lord. Akira's cousin doesn't deserve her loyalty, not after what she pulled. Akira has a mission to do that has come from the Fire Lord and she has no intention of doing that mission. It's a good thing many of her crew are young and don't have too many wives or kids. The ones that did have a family, she sent home as Akira refused to take those men with her on this mission.

So Akira goes to meet her men. And when she finds them, she finds them complaining. Akira stops at the door, deciding to eavesdrop first.

“Why did we have to go through that humiliation? We already told those families what happened!”

“We didn’t tell them everything.”

“Shut up!” The sound of a drink is heard being poured, then swallowed, “We should have been celebrated as heroes for what we did! Especially Akira!”

“Exactly! I mean, it’s not like Akira could have stopped him! Captain Li had the entire ocean to control. There’s no way any of us would have survived had we fought him before those ships surrounded us.”

“Yeah! Didn’t we sink that Earth Kingdom ship as ordered? So what if the Cap’n ended up being a Waterbending traitor?! We captured him! He’s rotting in prison! If the Fire Lord wanted him questioned, she could have done it herself, why expect Akira to do it?”

“I find it ironic that the Fire Lord did this to us and didn’t even consider the possibilities that she has a Waterbender in her prison, you know, a Waterbender! He likely has information that Lord Sasaki would find useful! Isn’t that alone worth some kind of reward?!”

“You speak truth! How often is it we get a Waterbender as a prisoner and a MASTER Waterbender at that?! And yet we all were humiliated in the Royal Plaza as if we did something wrong. The entire city thinks we're a laughing stock now. Don't you hear the whispers behind our backs? It’s not fair I tell you! We nearly became prisoners, nearly died, and for WHAT?!” The sound of something hits a wall. “To be treated like so much trash! Akira’s a hero, she deserved better.”

“We deserved better too.”

“I’ll drink to that.”

“At least most of the families forgave us! HA!”

“Hear, hear! Some of them even said we were heroes and that none of us could have done better.”

“Too bad Fire Lord Sasaki doesn’t see it that way. I’d like to see that woman’s head on a--”

Akira has had enough. She enters the room and puts her hands on her hips even as her men shut up and stare at her, wondering if she heard anything and if she did, how much, “I know your angry, I know what was done to us was not very fair. I agree with you, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to let you continue to talk that way."

"Akira, why obey the Fire Lord if she's only going to punish you for an imagined sleight?" One of her men asks.

Akira takes one look at her men and it's obvious they all feel the same way as she does. Not one of them feels very loyal to the Fire Lord. Neither does Akira, "Simple, she's the Fire Lord. Her word is law. And if I catch any of you talking like that again about her, I'll string you up for treason!" She says that more for the sake of this hidden contact than anything else even if Akira won't actually fulfill that threat.

No one likes that answer, but the men let it drop, "What is our mission?" One of the men dares to ask.

Akira opens her mouth to speak, but then she remembers her orders from the Fire Lord. Plus, mentioning anything will ruin her own plans since she doesn't know who this point of contact is. That contact could be in this very room and Akira would never know. She can't trust anyone, not even Master Isi, whom she asked to be brought on board in order to continue with her Firebeneding lessons before she 'fulfill's' Lord Saski's orders. She's never returning to the Fire Nation so bringing him was the smart play. Plus, he's not a body guard and just an old man who seems to be a little too obsessed with tea.

So, Akira may not be able to tell them what Lord Sasaki has ordered her to do, but she can make something up. And that is exactly what she does as she speaks, "We are going to take over and commandeer an Earth Kingdom ship that has been sailing in uncharted waters. We are to gather Intel first, glean any information on why they are out there and steal the ship. Then, we are to return to the Fire Nation." Akira says in a rather convincing lie. She is under orders not to reveal her REAL mission to anyone since her orders come directly from the Fire Lord. But, she had to give the men something. In truth, Akira has no intention of following the Fire Lord's orders, but she cannot say what she intends because of this mysterious contact that may be on board.

The men nod and warm up to the idea, not bothering to question how they will accomplish the mission while on board Akira's royal barge. They seem satisfied for now. And Akira will know that whoever her contact is will wonder what Akira is planning because he or she will know she just lied to her men. She has no intention of actually hunting down an Earth Kingdom ship. In fact, she did some digging. A lot of it recently and she found it. A very old map with an island that has been lost for thousands of years. It's not on any of the modern maps and it's the perfect place to disappear. But first, she needs to think of a way to get there, sink her ship and abandon her men so that the Fire Lord never knows where Akira went. She might even think her cousin is dead. Good thing she ripped the page out of the book that contains this ancient map. She can't risk being followed...ever. Akira does not intend for the Fire Lord, or anyone, to ever be able to find her.

So, with that done, Akira leaves the room. The last thing she needs is dealing with discontent among her crew. When she gets to the bridge, she orders her Royal Barge to pull out of the harbor and out to the open sea. The Fire Lord should have NEVER punished her the way she did. Had Sasaki rewarded her, as she deserved, then she would have gained Akira’s loyalty forever and she would have gladly done ANYTHING the woman desired. But instead, she punished her for no just cause, rhyme or reason. She sigh's as she stares at the Yamato. She wanted to command that ship, one of the best in the Fire Nation Navy. Her dreams dashed, she looks away in disgust. It's a good thing she ordered her Royal Barge to be modified with some weapons and catapults, otherwise her men might have questioned her idea of taking over, and commandeering, an Earth Kingdom ship.

Akira hates her, she hates the Fire Lord, she hates her cousin. She would have killed her on the spot if she had been powerful enough to challenge her for this gross injustice! For this insult! But no. Akira is no where near powerful enough to try that. So, she had to suffer under her own cousin’s misguided sense that Akira had done something wrong!

That is why Akira will no longer serve the Fire Lord. It’s a week later when the Yamato is a good distance from the Fire Nation when the ship encounters some trouble from a certain Waterbender...

@sasaki:

Akira feels Sasaki’s hand under her chin, bringing her head up until both cousins were looking at each other in the eyes. Akira swallows when Sasaki says she won’t accept anything else. Once she is dismissed, she rises and bows her head respectfully before turning around and follows her cousin as the Fire Lord guides her to the exit. And then Saski says that thing about Captain Li.

"And one more thing, cousin. Call it an exercise in mindfulness. I never want to hear that Li 'turned into a traitor' ever again. He didn't 'turn into a traitor.' He was a traitor from the start; he just didn't reveal it until the Yamato incident. If I hear otherwise again, I'll have him executed and you will take his place in prison."

Akira swallows hard, then looks at her cousin as she bows her head in respect...again. “Yes, Lord Sasaki, I understand. I shall be mindful of that in the future.” And then she leaves. When she finally knows she’s left the line of sight of her cousin, she clenches her teeth and her hands, rage as hot as any star coursing through her body and barely contained.

Once the men and the families of the ones that were lost a year ago were summoned to the Royal Plaza, Akira obediently stands there. Once every man, woman and child of the families of those men who were lost have arrived, then the humiliation begins. Sasaki can call it penance or doing what is morally right all she wants. This is a punishment. Akira would rather be beaten with a whip to the point of almost death rather than face this. These families were already told about the loss of their loved ones a year ago and now they have to be told again in the most humiliating way simply because Lord Sasaki wasn’t satisfied with Akira’s report or her actions aboard the Yamato when others praised her as a hero. This is not turning out at all how Akira envisioned this entire thing. Instead of being promoted, rewarded, she’s being humiliated and punished because her cousin chooses to cast this entire thing in a bad light.

But if Akira begged the Fire Lord to have anything else but this, explained the report a bit differently, she doubts the situation would be much better and the punishment definitely more severe. But as this entire situation begins, Akira knows she will never forgive her cousin for this. She will always remember this and she will never forgive. She was supposed to be celebrated as a hero not humiliated like this.

So, as Akira and the men explain what happened on the Yamato a year ago to the very letter, why those good men died to the very letter, why Akira and the rest hesitated to the very letter, how the men died before any of them could react to the very letter, how they viewed Captain Kenan Li and the entire episode to the very letter, and then how each in turn begged for forgiveness for the part they played because of their misguided loyalty to a well respected captain who had fooled them all WHILE looking each family in the eye, to the very letter.

Akira did as commanded by the Fire Lord, explaining the entire story and then begging forgiveness. She does everything to the very letter...as commanded. Most of the families who listened forgave Akira and the rest almost right away, explaining that she did the best she could under the circumstances and that there was nothing she could have done that would have been better. Captain Li had proven himself a Master Waterbender, to challenge him would have been suicide and the casualties might have been higher had they all fought the man and questioned his orders rather then hesitate. A lot of these families knew Captain Li and respected him, so they can see why Akira and her men couldn’t do much to stop him. He was a well respected Captain at the time and a master Waterbender. No one could have predicted he would turn into a traitor and anyone would have acted in a similar way as Akira and her men did, misguided loyalty or not. There was little that Akira could have done differently. One or two of them were genuinely confused as to why Akira and the others were doing this, “Heroes don’t deserve this.” One or two commented. That’s right, I don’t. Akira thinks to herself. This was supposed to be a happy day, a day of rewards and a promotion NOT humiliation.

Akira cannot stop herself but having a smug sense of satisfaction at this turn of events because most of the families chose to forgive and most viewed her as a hero even after explaining what happened. Even though this is deeply humiliating for her and her men, this is a very satisfying victory even if it is a small one. Perhaps next time her cousin will think twice before doing something like this...but Akira very much doubts it.

Unfortunately, not all the families of the lost are as forgiving. At least one family looked upon Akira and her men with disdain. The wife of a dead husband slaps Akira and the other men with her across the cheek, some land punches and some children kicked her and the others. But Akira and the other men begging forgiveness stand their ground. No one bothered fighting back as hot tears streamed down some of their faces, especially Akira’s young face.

Akira and the men humble themselves before the unforgiving family and once they have had their anger sated, then one by one, each family gave Akira and the men standing with her their leave. It was a fast process with the families that chose to forgive but it was not so fast with the lone family that chose not to forgive. But it finally happened where the last family finally gave Akira and the men with her their leave. Was it hours? A day later? Who knows, but it’s a long wait. But it finally happens that every family gives their leave to Akira and those with her.

As a soldier standing next to Akira takes a step to leave, Akira raises her arm and presses her hand on his chest, “Under orders by the Fire Lord herself, none of us are to leave until she has given it. Step back in line.”

The soldier glances at her with tired eyes, they were all tired. Some of their feet hurt and some wanted to sleep. The Soldier begins to protest, “But I’m tired--”

Akira hisses under her breath, glancing at him with a piercing gaze, her eyes like daggers, “I don’t care! Step back in line! Do you wish to face the wrath of the Fire Lord?”

The soldier gulps, then steps back in line. In all honesty, Akira is tired too. Exhausted. She hasn’t bothered to keep track of time but it feels like they’ve been here for...well, forever. She knows she’s pretty hungry, starving in fact. And she likely needs a bath because...well...lack of bathing and not being able to go to the bathroom...The Fire Lord DID say to the very letter...

Passing guards are already noticing the bedraggled line of men and...the other things. Some are laughing at them, even cracking jokes. Akira clenches her hands. She will never forgive her cousin for this humiliation. Never.

Akira and the men wait for the Fire Lord...and they wait..and they wait....

If and when the Fire Lord shows up, Akira and the men apologize...AGAIN...before her, each in turn and starting with Akira. She apologizes for the entire thing as does each man who served aboard the Yamato.

@sasaki@rosso

(OOC: Just a heads up, but to better reflect my later responses, I edited #163. I don't know if that's okay to do, but I just wanted to make an edit so that my later responses, and how Akira feels about the situation, better reflects what is happening to her in my later posts. Taken as it was originally, it didn't make much sense in my mind to have her agree with the Fire Lord only to do a 180 degree turn and disagree. Hence, the edit. I'm not trying to make you change or do edits of your own, I'm not. Nor am I trying to godmode or metagame. I just wanted to give you a heads up about the edits I made).

@tamaki:

"Thanks, me too." She says as she walks away with her bodyguard escort. Then she smiles, holding her new trinkets to her chest. That buy was an absolute steal. The necklace she recognized as belonging to her mother once but it was missing, or stolen, after she died. Akira could not believe he had it. The subtle markings on it Akira recognized as once belonging to her mother. It was worth at least 5 silver pieces but she managed to get it for free when she bought the ring for one silver coin when she pretended to be interested in the ring more than the necklace. And then the whole sob story and needing medicine, just a thing to get him to talk. Even the tuck of hair behind one ear seemed to have the effect Akira was going for. Not that she was pretending with that part because she really does think Tamaki is rather cute.

Tamaki may or may not even realize any of this until it's too late to do anything about it. Didn't he intend to get her to talk not the other way around? And the way she haggled for a price and was initially interested in the necklace but suddenly switched to a ring....even if it should enrage him that he was swindled, maybe on some level he can appreciate how sneaky she was. Maybe they will meet again and maybe then it'll be different.

(OOC: Indeed, it was fun. I hope you liked my closing post. ~_^)

Akira smiles ever so sweetly at him, "That's the smart thing to do. Be ready for anything. You never know what might happen. This a dangerous world we live in. That's why I have guards with me all times. If anyone attacks me, they'll have to get through them first."

Akira glances over the wares once more then to Tamaki, "You have a tough job, but you manage. I can respect that. Thank you for your time and the necklace, as well as the ring. Unfortunately," She looks a bit a sad, "My mother needs me."

Akira gratefully accepts the trinkets she just bought. Then she looks over at Tamaki as he explains the situation. She appears to think for a moment, glancing away with those light brown eyes of hers, "Well, that's okay. I'll think of something, I always do. But thank you for at least trying."

Akira tucks some hair behind her ear, glancing down at her trinkets she just bought, "Your brave you know. Some of these wares are from all over. That one," She points at a trinket that is made of partial rock, "is definitely Earth Kingdom. And this one," She points at a piece of jewelry in the shape of a tear drop, "is from the Water Tribe." She looks at Tamaki's clothes, then to his, she has to admit, handsome face, "Isn't it dangerous to trade the way you do? Has anyone ever attacked you before?"

Akira shakes her head, looking a bit down, "No, it's not for me." And that confirms that. But then when he mentions twelve copper pieces and it's deal, she smiles meekly, "Really? That's great!" Then she digs into her small money pouch, taking out a silver coin and 12 coppers, carefully counting them in front of him so he knows he isn't being swindled. With that, she offers him the silver coin and the coppers.

But when he asks about the medicine and what kind, she looks sorrowful again, almost as she's losing some very dear to her, "Oh, it's rare. Which is why it's so valuable. At least for us here in the Fire Nation since it doesn't grow here. I'm looking for Banana leaves, but so far no one has them in stock."

(OOC: And yes, banana leaves are a thing in the Avatar world. They are used for medicine).

@tamaki: (OOC: This RP takes place 2 days before Akira is summoned before the Fire Lord, if that's okay with you?)

Akira looks disappointed, "Two silvers for a ring such as this?" Then she looks down at the jewelry box and her eyes go wide. "Ohhh, so beautiful." She reaches down and touches it, almost caressing it. But she again looks disappointed as she takes her hands away, "Well, I don't have much. I need to buy some medicine..." She leaves it vague.

Akira looks over at the young man, offering him a kind, but genuine smile, "I love your wares, but I...simply cannot afford anything. I'm sorry." She begins to look sorrowful, then starts to turn around to leave....
