Felicity reads the description for Akira's new company once she sees Akira come into her office, "Heroes For Hire, Inc. is a small business licensed by Japan which offers a full line of professional investigation and protection services. Heroes For Hire is solely owned by Akira Hoshi. It has a single office in Tokyo, Japan and two paid employees, secretary Felicity Sullivan and lawyer/business representative, Marie Taylor. Heroes For Hire will not accept jobs involving extralegal activities."
Akira nods approvingly, sitting down across from Felicity, "I like it, it's perfect."
Felicity smiles at the praise, "Thanks! Kudos for convincing Marie to sign up as our lawyer. No one from Japan would take us on." She brings up her hands and does a motion with her index and middle fingers as she emphasizes a point, "It's too risky, they all claimed."
Akira shrugs it off, "Well, it is a new business and no hero has ever done this before. I can see why very few people would want to jump into the unknown, but I am also glad Ms. Taylor accepted the offer. That woman has an adventurous spirit."
Felicity opens a bottle of champagne and pours them both a glass as the two celebrate the blossoming growing of a beautiful company. They klink the glasses together and drink, having some girl talk.
The Heroes for Hire Inc. has recently hit hard times. Out of desperation, Akira decided to sell her business when an offer was made to save it on the condition she remains in a position of leadership. Felicity Sullivan, of course, remained on board as the team's tech support.
The Heroes for Hire Inc. remains a business of professional investigation and protection services, along with anything else that their clients need so long as it does not break the law. The team prides itself in working with law enforcement officials because heroes obey the law of the land and are not above it.
The team is made up of a small group of heroes with legally obtained licenses to do what they do best so long as they don't break the law. They frequently travel the entire United States in a mobile base so that they may not only help as many people as they can, but spread their name.
The current roster for the Heroes for Hire Inc. includes:
1. Destruction: Minor destruction of the Heroes for Hire mobile base is allowed but no more than that. Anything more requires my permission. The mobile base is a Diesel truck with a trailer, filled with computers, gadgets and everything the Heroes for Hire Inc. need when traveling on the road.
2. Heroes for Hire Business: Since I am not looking to start a team with this, consider this a business and NOT a team. If you wish to join, ask me and you can be a Hero for Hire as well. But be warned, I'm not going to be making any effort to give your character missions or tasks to complete. Well, unless you RP with me and then I'll be sure to keep your character busy (~_^). There will be NO team based PM and outside of RPing with me, your on your own when coming up with things for your character to do as a Hero for Hire.
3. Theft: Feel free to steal anything in the mobile base. Well, except Felicity's computers, laptop and wheelchair, she needs those and those are off limits. Everything else is free game. You can even steal Starlight's suit if you want, Felicity can always make Akira a new one. Unless, of course, Starlight is already wearing it; In which case, good luck with that.
4. Security & Defenses: I didn't mention it in the main part of my blog, but Felicity has installed a number of defenses and security in the mobile base. Bulletproof glass windows, a force field to surround the office to protect it from damage from at least a mid-tier meta-human and pacification technology in order to stun/knockout any would be intruders. It also has cutting edge alarm systems, motion detectors and cameras in every room. HOW Felicity managed all this, well...let's just say my character Keira Hawke owed Felicity a favor or two.
5. Base of Operations: Heroes for Hire used to be based in Tokyo, Japan. Now they are mobile and move all over the United States.
6. Please obey the normal forum rules as well as the CVnU rules.
7. OOC & IC: This is both an Out of Character Thread and an In Character thread. Feel free to post here, but please keep it drama free.
It was all over the news and NASA couldn't do anything to stop it. Akira Hoshi had returned after decades of being declared missing and/or killed in action. No one really knows who got wind of the story or who leaked it, but it was out and there was a media storm over it like no other. A woman out of time meets the 21st century. Everyone wanted to do an exclusive interview with Akira Hoshi. But no one got one since NASA swore Akira to secrecy concerning her mission in space.
Akira told NASA everything that happened to her, including how she got her powers. That seemed to both frighten them and please them. Unfortunately, they didn't need Akira anymore and it would require too much time and effort to undo all the paper work in order to return her to active service. Plus, she'd need retraining on modern equipment. So, they offered her a small pension and told her to go home.
Akira had no home to return to, no where to go and no where to live. But NASA was forced to give her a bonus on her pension based on how many years she had been away and never got any pay. So, using that bonus, she bought a house and began looking for a job. The media would not leave her alone, even offering her book deals on her adventures in space, even a movie offer. But Akira was not interested in any of that because she knew it would mean revealing classified information.
Ever since Akira got back, she payed regular visits to her parents graves. They had been dead for several years now but had been alive when she left. She had missed so much of their lives and they died never knowing if Akira was alive or dead. It was heartbreaking to stand over their graves, as she put down the flowers on each of them. They had been great parents to her, but she was taken from them far too soon. Losing them like this was especially hard on Akira.
One day, a knock came on Akira's door and when she answered it, she is shocked to find it's her former fiance, Ryu and his wife. Both a ripe old age. She invites them in and they talk for hours. It's a bittersweet reunion for Akira. Honestly, she had been dreading it. Ryu, the love of her life, her soul mate, married to another woman. They spoke of having children, even showing pictures on a strange device called an iPhone. And through it all, Akira is happy for Ryu, at least he's been happy all these years. But she silently mourns for a life that might have been...should have been...hers. They exchange phone numbers and Ryu and his wife eventually leave. When left alone, Akira breaks down in tears. Her life is in shambles, her soul mate married and old, her parents are dead and she lives in a world she doesn't even recognize. So many advancements in technology, she feels so overwhelmed. And worse, she cannot find a job!
Akira, ever the fighter, refuses to give up. She didn't let an alien planet beat her down and she won't let this beat her down either. It wouldn't be the first time she started out with nothing. Akira will just have to build herself up again until she has a life she is happy with.
That very night when Akira stops a bank robbery, it hits her like a ton of bricks. She's pretty good at this Super-Hero thing. She gets an idea and that is when she flies home. She comes up with a name for herself. She will call herself Starlight. Star since that is what her last name means and because she commands light in almost all it's forms, she just added that to the name. Starlight. She likes it, it rolls off the tongue nice and easy. So, she sews herself a costume. Several, actually, before she finally settles on a design she likes.
Akira puts an add in the paper, WANTED: HERO FOR HIRE and some additional texts explaining she's Akira Hoshi and she'll be your hero if you need one. Because of the recent media frenzy about her, she soon got overwhelmed with phone calls and found work doing some of the craziest things. Arriving at kids birthday parties, making her presence known at a charity event, she even got to put on a show in a zoo! But then her first real job comes when she gets to fight a KAIJU! YEAH! Starlight didn't ever think she'd actually fight one of those gaint beings. But she did and she saved Tokyo, Japan because she fought it and beat it.
Seems her Heroes for Hire business is a minor success. She's getting payed to do things and with that money, she can pay her bills and put food in her belly. It's around this time that some mysterious hacker contacts her, calling herself Trinityand that she wants to help Starlight out on her missions, be her partner. At first, Akira refuses but this Trinity is persistent. So, Akira decides to put this mysterious hacker to the test. When Akira wants a face to face meet up, Trinity agrees and names the location. It's a very public place and that is a smart move.
Akira meets this Trinity in a restaurant and the woman introduces herself as Felicity Sullivan.
Akira takes one look at the woman's wheelchair and again refuses to let her help out in the Heroes for Hire. But Felicity insists she won't go out on the field, she doesn't need to. She can use her expertise to help from their base of operations, hack into anything Akira needs and even invent cool tech to take down the more difficult bad guys. Felicity's sales pitch is great, actually.
So Akira decides to give Felicity a trial run. If she passes, she's hired but if she fails then she leaves. The two women shake on it and the friendship of a life time begins.
Last Video Log Entry: A tired looking Akira appears on the screen, but also a bit fearful looking, "I escaped the monster, but I had to come back because I am going to set a trap and use myself as bait to try and destroy this monster. I am going to rig the ship to explode while the beast is inside. Hopefully, the explosion will kill it while I pass through the wall and fly away. This is my last video log and I realize that all my previous logs will be lost forever. But that is okay, I needed them more for myself and my sanity more than anything else. Goodbye." The Video switches off.
Akira rigs her ship to explode once the Beast is inside and it doesn't take long before the beast is hunting Akira yet again. Why it chooses to do that so relentlessly is a mystery that may never be solved.
As soon as the Beast comes barging inside, Akira presses a button and the ship explodes while she phases through the explosion and flies out of it.
Up in the sky, Akira looks down at the smoking wreckage of her space craft. She smiles, thinking she finally did it. Finally, she killed the monster.
The smoke clears, however, and the Beast stands there unscathed. It looks up with red glowing eyes at Akira and opens it's mouth, laughing at her. Almost as if it was such a sad, pathetic attempt to kill it. Akira loses her smile, immediately blasting the thing when it leaps up into the air to try and attack her.
The Beast is so fast and quick, it slams a fist into Akira's beautiful face and spurts of blood fly everywhere as she is sent careening out of control. Akira lands hard into a cavern and as she recovers from her brief fight, she gasps in horror at what she sees. A vast graveyard of bones. An endless pile of bones. Alien bones. This is the first sign of any kind of life on this planet, other than the beast, she has seen.
As Akira hears a roar from the beast, she suddenly realizes why it's been hunting her so relentlessly. It must have wiped out all life on this planet and now it wants it kill her. "I must have awoken it somehow." She remarks with another sudden realization.
As Akira flies further inside the cavern in an attempt to hide from the beast, she stumbles upon an ancient device of some kind. Putting her hand inside the alien hand symbol activates the device and some kind of star map appears. The map tells where Akira is and where Earth is. But it also points to a wormhole in space that is near Earth but also near the Vega star system, confirming that a wormhole did, indeed, bring her here. If only she had found this star map sooner!
With a renewed sense of purpose, Akira flew out of the cave but not before running into the Beast again. No matter what she did to it, the thing just would not die. So, she lures it into the cavern, phases through it's body and collapses the cavern on top of it with several laser blasts from her hands. Already, the Beast was digging it's way out. But Akira chooses not to stick around as she flies up and out of the planet's atmosphere.
Being in space is like being in a dark room. Akira has to force herself to calm down, fighting her fear of the dark. Clenching her hands and jaw, she flies towards the wormhole. Thanks to her Electromagnetic Spectrum Vision, she can see it as clear as day. She zooms towards it at the speed of light and enters it. In seconds, she comes out on the other side and flies towards Earth.

The offer to help with the Heroes for Hire was a dream come true and Felicity has proven her worth time and again.
Video Log #1: The image of a beautiful Japanese woman appears speaking in english.
"Hello. My name is Akira Hoshi and I'm an Astronaut!"
Akira smiles enthusiastically, but then rolls her eyes, giving a small frustrated huff.
"Oh my goodness that's lame. Whatever, here's the situation. I was flying in an experimental space shuttle designed to go faster than light and something went wrong as soon as I tried out the new FTL drive. There was an explosion and I ended up in the Vega star system, believe it or not. According to my astronomy, Vega is at least 25 light years from Earth. But how could an explosion place me so far from home? I had to have gone through some sort of wormhole, which would explain how I got here."
"The FTL drive is out and everything I've tried so far has failed. So, I focused my attention on the engines that do work and I managed to get them working good enough for a crash landing on an alien planet. I wanted to assess my surroundings, so I put on my space suit and left the ship. Everything was bathed in blue thanks to the sun in the Vega system. When I took some readings with my handy little device,"
She holds up some kind of scanning device before lowering it.
"It detected a breathable atmosphere, so I took my helmet off and breathed in some air. And then I suddenly realized I'm on an alien planet. I almost had a panic attack right then because I am all alone. But I forced myself to calm down. I assessed my situation. The shuttle needed repaired, along with multiple systems, but at least I didn't have to worry about life support at the moment. I was good with shelter because my ship could provide that. I also had enough food to last me a week or two if I ration my supply. That leaves water because I only have enough to last me a few days and only if I use it sparingly."
Video Log #3: Akira smiles and waves at the camera, "Hi! Guess what? I found water! It tastes like mountain spring water back on Earth. It took me a few days of exploration to find this new water source, but now that I know where to get more water I have to focus on my next priority. Food. I'm going to have to be very careful when hunting for food because I don't recognize any of the plant life here. I was hoping to find some animals, anything to hunt to get some meat at least. But so far, I haven't seen a single one, not even a rodent. I haven't even seen bugs or anything close to that. Let's hope I find something soon."
Video Log #6: A very sick looking Akira appears on the screen, "Well, I did a stupid thing today. I tasted a rather edible looking plant and took a risk. But I took a small bite just in case it wasn't edible. Turns out, it's not edible and I haven't been feeling well all day and," She makes a face, "You do NOT want to know what happened last night."
She puts her hands up in mock surrender before putting them back down, "Let's just say, I didn't get any sleep at all last night. I'm throwing up a--" Before she can finish the sentence, she leans away from the camera and out of view as sounds of her throwing up are heard.
Video Log #7: A much better looking Akira appears on screen, "Sorry about the last video log," She looks apologetic, "I'm feeling much better now. I just got back from more exploring. It's a beautiful planet with a mild temperature. Repairs on the ship are going slow, as is finding some food. But there has got to be something to eat on this planet, something I can grow. If could just figure our which plants are edible, I can grow a garden."
Video Log #11: An excited Akira appears on the screen, holding up a strange looking plant with leaves on it, "I found food! After doing some careful testing, this plant and a few others, are edible. One of them has a sort of sweet taste to it, but it's subtle so it's not too much. I gathered as much as I could and replanted them near my ship. It's the start to my garden and I had enough to make some soup last night. It was good, mildly sweet, but good. It needed some salt and other seasoning, though. Now that I have my food problem taken care of, I'll hunt for more plants like it and continue building up my garden. But now I can focus more time on trying to repair this ship and getting off this rock."
Video Log #16: Akira appears again on the screen, "There doesn't seem to be a night cycle to this planet. The sun almost sets every day, but it doesn't. Then it rises before almost setting again. I hope the sun never sets. I'd hate to find out this planet has a long night cycle that lasts for several months. That wouldn't be very good for my garden, which is doing GREAT FYI. I have even found what I call a potato plant, so I was able to add some potatoes to my soup. Repairs are still going slow. It's all so frustrating. So much damage was done in the crash landing. Just as I get one system to work, another one quits. Then I repair that one and another one quits." She shakes her head.
"I did manage to rig a solar panel to recharge some of the ship's systems. But if I use too much, I'll burn some systems out like I did the first time I tried. Not fun."
Video Log #17: Akira appears on the screen again, holding up her hands which are...glowing?! She lowers them and then speaks to the camera, "No, that is not your eyes playing tricks on you. My hands glow. I don't know how or why, but it was happening today when I was busy repairing some of my ship's systems. I remember thinking, and wishing, I had more light to see by. And then, just like that, my hands start glowing. I don't know why my hands glow now, but I can't seem to turn this off, whatever it is. I had to start wearing gloves. Maybe it's this planet, maybe it's changing me. But why? Whatever it is, I hope it goes away. It's annoying."
Video Log #20: Akira appears on the screen again, "Whatever is happening to me is getting worse. I was frustrated with work and I felt this sudden surge of...I don't know, something building up inside of me and some kind of energy burst out of my hands. I jumped out of my skin, it scared me so bad. And that is when I passed through the wall of my ship. Yes, I actually passed through the wall of my ship! I had a panic attack right then and there because I thought I was dead. I had to be some kind of ghost. I died on this planet and now I'm haunting it. But then I got hungry and it's then I realized, I wasn't dead. Ghosts don't get hungry, so I was soooo relieved to find I wasn't dead."
She lifts a glowing a hand and sweeps back some black hair, "Still can't seem to make my hands stop glowing. I'm going to have to make this a priority since these changes are starting to interfere with my work."
Video Log #22: An excited Akira appears on the screen, hands waving this way and that, and they are not glowing! "Oh! My! GOODNESS! I flew today! Sadly not in my space shuttle, but under my own power I flew! I actually flew!"
Akira takes a deep, satisfying breath, "I went out exploring this planet again, looking for more of those edible plants for my garden when I slipped and fell off a cliff. I never hit the bottom because I found myself floating in the air. That is when I realized I could fly. And fly I did. I discovered I could fly really, really fast." Akira laughs , almost dancing.
"At first, I didn't know what was happening to me, but it seems I have super powers! Like the heroes in the comics. Now I wish I had read more of them when I was a kid."
Video Log #52: "I have lost track of time on this planet. I don't know how long I have been here, but it feels like a long time. The ship is a...lost cause."
A tear slips down her cheek, "I've tried everything I could think of. Nothing works. I have power to have certain systems, but the engines are completely shot. I have tried and tried to get them to work and NOTHING!" She keeps crying, thinking she's never to get back to Earth and see her family again. The video ends.
Video Log #53: A scared looking Akira appears on the screen, "I'm not alone on this planet after all. There is some kind of monster here. He's HUGE! He has these bone-like protrusions all over his body. Worse, it's hunting me. I barely managed to escape it, but I know it's hunting me. I just know it."
Akira visibly covers her mouth with tears streaming down her face, "I don't know what to do! My powers only make it madder and I've tried blasting it!"
Then a loud inhuman scream happens off camera which causes Akira to jump and scream, "No! It's found me! HELP ME! SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!" Akira is visibly shaking and crying as the screen turns black.

POWERS & ABILITIES
Exposure to energy from the star Vega granted Starlight the following powers and abilities.
Photokinesis: With this power, Starlight can see, control, manipulate and use light according to her desire. This gives her the following capabilities:
Electromagnetic Spectrum Vision: - Starlight is able to perceive the entire electromagnetic spectrum of energy. This gives her the ability to see gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet light, visible light, infrared, terahertz waves, microwaves and radio waves. Heat radiating off of objects can clearly be seen even minutes or sometimes hours after the source of the heat is gone thanks to her Thermal Vision. And when Starlight focuses on the ultraviolet frequency of light, this can cause many substances to glow, or fluoresce, from the chemical reactions when she looks directly at them. Finally, so long as there is some light in the area then Akira can see perfectly at night in different shades of green.
Energy Projection: - Akira can shoot photon beams of light from her hands, eyes or mouth at her opponent. She can also focus the intensity of such beams to do a varying degree of damage as well as the area effected.
Flight: - By far Starlight’s favorite power, she achieves flight by manipulating the light waves around her and then ‘riding them’. A beam made of light typically trails off after her when she does this. The speed of light is the fastest she is able to achieve or anywhere in between.
Force Field: - Akira is able to create force fields of varying size either around herself or around others. This power requires focus and concentration so it cannot be done automatically. These force fields can take shots from most bludgeoning damage, blows from super strength, bladed weaponry, bullets, falls from great heights, temperature extremes, high G-forces and some forms of energy. The more focus Starlight has, the stronger her force field.
Generate Light: - Starlight is able to cause any part of her body to glow or all at once if she so chooses. This is useful to dispel shadows and provide light for others to see by. She can also make the light so bright it causes temporary blindness in her opponents. If another hero happens to be a solar battery then Starlight is able to recharge them by using this ability on them or killing vulnerable Vampires.
Invisibility & Intangibility: - By bending the light waves around her, Akia can turn completely invisible to the naked eye and certain electronic devices & cameras. Enhanced Senses, Thermal Vision, Infrared Imaging and other methods of detection will still be able to see her, however. She is also able to transform into a being of pure light, becoming transparent and allowing her to pass through walls.
Light Constructs: - Akira can create any construct she can imagine but she is limited by her knowledge, skill and imagination. These constructs are made of what she calls hard light energy since she is able to interact with her environment with her powers and even fight super-villains by creating a boxing glove and hitting them with it. So long as she has a basic understanding of how an object works, she can create and use it. A lack of understanding means she cannot create it. The more focus Starlight has, the stronger her construct. Akira's constructs are made of light so she cannot create food or anything that she can consume for sustenance. She also cannot create life and any construct of a person or an animal is strictly controlled by her mind. Each construct is also limited to any single color inside the spectrum, but she usually settles for white or yellow. If she wishes to create objects in the full range of colors, then all she has to do is refract the light waves around her to create realistic holographic images. Unfortunately, these so called holograms are not solid and cannot be used to inflict harm.
Light Dispersion: - Starlight's powers come with the benefit of being able to disperse any, and all, sources of light, holographic illusions and radiation with a casual wave of her hand.
Self-Healing: - Since this power is not automatic, Akira must concentrate on herself in order to allow the light within her body to heal her of almost any injury that is inflicted upon her. Drugs, Toxins and diseases can also be purged in this way. She is also able to heal others as well. Unknown to her, Akira ages much more slowly than a normal human and it is unknown how long she will live.
Sense Light: - Starlight is able to sense all of the light particles that exist around her and is able to know when a person or object interacts with them. This almost acts as a sort of 'sixth sense' because she does not need to be looking at someone to know they might be holding a gun or enter the same room she is occupying. The light particles interacting with the gun or person will tell her all she needs to know even if her back is turned.
Self-Sustenance: Whenever Starlight flies or turns intangible, she turns into pure light. While in this state, Akira has no need to eat, breathe or sleep.
WEAKNESSES & LIMITATIONS
Bending Light & Reflective Surfaces: Akira has had trouble in the past when devices or super beings showed the capability of bending the light projected from her powers. Reflective surfaces have also been used to defend against her. It takes a considerable amount of power and energy for Starlight to overcome these obstacles as she has managed to on occasion, but sometimes she fails.
Concentration: Starlight's powers require focus & concentration. Anything that can disrupt her concentration, such as alcohol, will render her incapable of using her powers. This also depends on the level of such disruption. A little will only effect her mildly while a lot will render her pretty much powerless. Once the source of the disruption is removed, however, Akira will regain her powers.
Magic: Akira is just as vulnerable to magic as a regular human is.
Psionic Powers: Akira is vulnerable to the psychic powers of the mind, such as Telepathy or mind control. Her powers rely on concentration and these powers can either disrupt that or inflict harm upon her. Other psionic powers, such as Telekinesis, are less effective against Starlight since those do not effect the mind.
Solar Battery: Starlight is a living solar battery and she collects sunlight to use as fuel for her powers. Whenever she uses one of her abilities, she uses up a little of her energy reserves. If she completely drains herself of all her energy then she must recharge before using her powers again. During daylight hours, this usually isn’t a problem since she is constantly being recharged and ready for action. However, during night time hours Akira must be careful. Although the moon does reflect the light of the sun, it’s usually not enough to recharge her should she use too much energy & it’s only during a full moon (or close to it) that she gains anything at all. Even then the process of recharging is much slower then it is during the day.
Akira’s energy reserves is usually good to last her for a full 24 hours straight if she isn’t actively using her powers and when deprived of sunlight. However, the more she uses her abilities then the more she loses the light that is packed into her cells. It usually works like a gas tank. If Starlight does small things, such as light a candle, then she uses up only a small amount of energy. But if she creates a construct as big as a skyscraper then that will use a lot of energy. During the night, energy conservation is a must and she usually has enough to last her the entire night. But if she isn’t careful then she will run out of energy and if this happens then she loses her powers until she can recharge.
Starlight recharges very quickly during the day, depending on how much energy she expended during the night. If she’s on empty, then she’ll need 24 minutes to fully recharge herself while in direct sunlight (1 minute is equal to a charge of 1 hour). Only the light of the sun can recharge Akira as any other light source will not work.
X-Ray Vision: Starlight cannot see through lead.
SKILLS & OTHER ABILITIES
Expert Pilot: Akira is able to pilot jets, airplanes, helicopters and space shuttles.
Experienced Fighter: While Akira is not a master of any one style, she does know how to throw a punch and a kick. Plus, she knows how to use her powers effectively in combat, making her a force to be reckoned with.
Gardner & Natural Medicine: Akira is an expert at gardening. She can recognize just about any kind of plant and know if it has health benefits, if it's poisonous or if it's good for food. Akira is capable of using plants to heal and relieve others of pain and injuries by creating natural remedies.
Indomitable Willpower: Akira has shown a remarkable willpower that has allowed her to resist many forms of mind control, illusion and torture.
Linguistic: Akira is fluent in Japanese, Chinese, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean and English.
Mechanic: Akira is a gifted mechanic, capable of repairing any kind of space shuttle, airplane, jet or helicopter. She can even perform repairs on cars, motorcycles and other similar vehicles.
Photographic/Eidetic Memory: Akira rarely, if ever, forgets anything. She can remember almost any moment of her life or information she has come across. Events, peoples and places are also not a problem.
Ear Piece Communicator: As Starlight, Akira uses an ear piece communicator with her work partner, Felicity Sullivan. The tiny communicator's range has been amplified to allow it to reach Starlight anywhere in the world.
Body Suit: Akira's body suit she wears as Starlight is capable of scanning, measuring and informing Akira of any fluctuations in her health, power level and the need to recharge should it be necessary. The headband Starlight wears is capable of, with a press of a button, covering Akira's eyes in order to give her a Heads Up Display on her suit's readouts and scan objects and/or people with Augmented Reality in order to glean information she normally wouldn't be able to detect with her powers. The Body Suit also has a built-in heart defibrillator in case Akira's heart stops and she needs resuscitation.
The left forearm of the Body Suit, with hidden haptic controls, is capable of displaying a holographic flat-screen projection of people who wish to communicate with Starlight while she is out on the field, much like modern cell phones being able to display a live feed of someone they talk to. This holographic projection is also capable of wireless internet access. The body suit has cutting edge firewalls, anti-malware, anti-spyware, and anti-virus protection of the highest grade with updates downloaded multiple times per day.
Akira Hoshi had dreams of being an Astronaut ever since she was a little girl. She had many other dream jobs throughout the years but she always came back to the desire of one day becoming an Astronaut. When Akira finally became old enough, she moved to the United States and became a citizen before entering the Air Force where she became a pilot and then later she joined the NASA space program.
Akira worked hard in NASA, but she finally achieved her dream and became an Astronaut. Since she wanted to fly the space shuttle, she worked on being a pilot and achieved that with a lot of hard work and training.
During her time at NASA, Akira met and fell in love with Ryu Lee who would later ask her to marry him. She said yes and the two planned to get married after Akira's next mission so she could take some time off for a nice honeymoon.
It would be Akira's second mission into space that her life would change forever. She was testing a new type of space shuttle capable of faster than light travel when something went wrong and she ended up all the way to the Vega star system, which was 25 light years from Earth. Akira wondered how her new circumstances were possible since the shuttle was not designed to go out that far and she theorized she must have went through some kind of wormhole.
Akira's situation was dire. The shuttle's engines were barely responding to her commands and it had suffered heavy damage to multiple systems, including life support. She was too far out to send an SOS to NASA and time was running out. Fortunately, her ship's sensors detected a nearby planet that could support life. But first, she faced the problem of getting there on time. She had to perform some repairs on the engines before she had enough power to get herself to the planet. Unfortunately, Akira had to make a crash landing which only served to damage to ship even further.
Akira was alone on a strange planet with a wrecked shuttle she doubted she could repair and she was completely alone. She had to force herself not to have a panic attack. Instead, she focused on one job at a time instead of all at once. Since Akira had landed on a planet with a breathable atmosphere, she focused on a more immediate concern. Water. She only had enough water to last a few days and only if she rationed her supply. The ship provided shelter, so she was good there and she had plenty of food rations to last a week or two if she rationed those as well.
As Akira slowly explored the new planet she crashed on, she managed to find a drinkable water supply. Now her next problem was food and she could not recognize any of the plant life on the new world and any fauna seemed to be non-existent. But as Akira faced one problem at a time, she was able to overcome them before tackling her next problem.
Akira lost track of time while on the new planet, but as she felt the Vega system's sunlight beat down on her, her body underwent some changes. Due to the planet's unique properties and the star in the Vega system, Akira's meta-human gene activated and she gained super-human powers over light. As this new development came into play, Akira explored her new powers and discovered she could do a great many things. She used her new powers to explore the new world she was on, but could not find any native alien species or a way off the planet.
One day of exploration turned into a nightmare. To her dread, Akira discovered something was alive on the planet she had crashed on. Some kind of alien being that had a frightening visage. It plagued Akira's nightmares and hunted her relentlessly. Even with her new powers, the monster proved too strong and powerful to be put down. So, Akira layed a trap for the monster and used her ship to blow the thing to kingdom come. At least, so she thought.
Akira knew using her ship erased all possibility of her ever being able to go home. But the thing was beyond repair anyway despite her efforts to try and repair it. Even worse, the monster had survived her attempt to kill it. While on the run from it, she stumbled upon an alien graveyard and realized to her shock and horror that this thing that was hunting her had wiped out all life on the planet and she had somehow awoken it. When Akira stumbled upon the grave, she had also stumbled upon some kind of ancient device that activated a star map. After studying the star map for a brief period of time, Akira was able to determine that a wormhole was indeed responsible for taking her into the Vega star system.
Akira fought off the alien monster one last time before she managed to make it into space, fighting down her fear of the dark. She flew as fast as she could for the wormhole and entered it. The wormhole deposited Akira reasonably close to Earth. Even then, it still took her two days just to reach Earth at the speed of light.
Upon Akira's return to Earth, she found that decades had passed and both her parents were dead. Her fiance had married another woman and had a family with her. NASA had given up on Akira and considered her MIA and possibly dead. Although she revealed herself to still be alive, which caused a media storm like no other, Akira found that NASA would not accept her back. She was also sworn to secrecy on what had happened to her.
Akira had a bittersweet reunion with her former fiance, Ryu, who had come to see her once he found out she was still alive. She was sad to see him so old and married to another woman with a family of his own. But Akira was not one to hold a grudge and was glad that Ryu was at least happy and had lived a good life. But Akira was still sad because she silently mourned for the life that might have been hers.
Akira's life was in shambles and her early retirement pension was barely enough money to live by. So, the young woman made herself a costume and adopted the name of Starlight. She started her own company called Heroes for Hire and she's been working as a hired hero ever since.
Shortly after starting the Heroes for Hire business, Akira met Felicity Sullivan, who would later become her tech guru, but also her secretary. Felicity would prove herself again and again as she helps, and communicates, with Akira while her friend risks her life out on the field as Starlight.
The Heroes of Tomorrow get payed to be heroes and to save lives, but Starlight will also perform heroic acts for free because she knows not everyone can afford to hire her. She also knows that not everyone is going to want to hire a hero. But somehow, the Heroes of Tomorrow make just enough money to get by and put food on the table. It remains to be seen if this business truly takes off and becomes successful.
Due to the nature of her powers, Akira can stare into the sun without it damaging her eyes. Because of this quark, she cannot be blinded by any light source no matter how bright.
While sunlight is packed into Akira's cells, her blood glows yellow if she bleeds. It appears like normal red blood if she is powerless, however.
Starlight is warm to the touch thanks to the sunlight within her body. This allows her to tolerate the cold more than anyone else and can tolerate even the cold vacuum of space as if it were nothing more than a little chilly.
Akira is completely immune to her own powers and cannot be harmed by them.
Starlight is completely immune to Vampirism because the solar energy packed in her cells will eliminate the disease.
