@v_scarlotte_rose: I sincerely doubt it. There were a ton of those books.

They are part of the rare exception to my "started reading comics in 2013" story: back in my freshman/sophomore years of college a nearby bookstore had ridiculous sales on them and I didn't know anything about events or the fact that "Civil War" wasn't its own series. I just bought ones that looked cool or that I didn't have. I know there are others I missed.

After that I stopped by a comic shop near my school and ended up getting a few X-Force (Kyle/Yost) and Deadpool comics, and then that was it, for years. When I got back into comics I picked up with X-Force again, and I haven't even gone back to read Civil War, so I remember little of what I read there except some young girl was reading Atlas Shrugged.

Wow. I wish I had a shop like that nearby. The places I go have good prices on second hand stuff, but nothing I'd call 'ridiculous sales'.

@v_scarlotte_rose: I got each volume for five bucks. Considering they were all less than a year old and probably retail for double or triple that, I'd call that a pretty ridiculous sale.

With the current exchange rate, $5 is £3.30. I've never had a new TPB that cheap. I've had some great bargains in charity shops between 50p(76c) and £2($3.03), but never in a comic book shop.

@v_scarlotte_rose: Well that sale was in a book shop, not a comic book shop, so I guess comics weren't their primary draw. Still, it's a bit unprecedented, for sure.

Oh, well the best I've had in a book shop was £4.99($7.57), but I used a £5 off voucher to get it for that.

@v_scarlotte_rose: This comes back around to that question of whether UK readers are being ripped off; I think we all agreed yes :/

On some TPBs of varied prices I bought new, checking the prices in dollars on the back, and on the prices in pounds that I paid, I've paid between £1($1.52) and £2($3.04) more than someone in America would have done. It's not so bad.

@v_scarlotte_rose: Perhaps not. *shrug* I guess I don't import anything except the occasional Japanese game soundtrack (and let's not even talk about how terrible those prices can get) so I don't know whether it's similar the other way around.

Hard to tell really. I imagine a lot of comparisons would have to be made.

@delphic: Amazon's the way to go :)

I prioritized it because @lykopis and @mercy_ both gushed about it. It had been lower on my list but I was told it was required reading on the basis that I was enjoying Bendis' current take on Emma and that simply wouldn't do without a proper education on her past.

Side note: my thoughts on the volume are here.

@akbogert: I'll probably end up getting it from here:

http://www.mycomicshop.com/search?TID=22094691

It's just a little cheaper, but I have other stuff on my priority list right now. I've just always wanted the book because I found interest in the character. I think from an one shot called X-Women from a couple years back is really what sparked my interest.

@delphic: Quite understandable. I've got a very long list myself and like I said, this wasn't initially in the priority zone for me. I've heard dubious things about X-Women... I seem to recall people considering it very misogynistic, though maybe that was just covers (which is funny, considering the covers for this Frost series).

@akbogert: It had it's moments of exploitation, but it's not as bad as everyone lets on. I've read far worse one-shots. I mainly have fond memories of it though, because it was one of the first comics I picked up when I started really collecting, and was getting over my fear of people judging me because of what books I decide to pick up. I also have to say that I remember the artwork of the book being fantastic, despite the fact that the whole book was pretty much drawn to reflect the female characters in the most sexual way possible.

@delphic: Hahah. Judging by that description, I can understand why I've heard so much resentment.

As for being judged for what you pick up, heh. I have a feeling that most Aspen or Zenescope books in my future will be acquired digitally. Just because you can explain yourself doesn't mean you always want to have to :P

There's one critical rule about comic fans that I have always took to heart and it has helped me to find books that I have actually found to be some of my favorites, when everyone else hated them. That saying is "Comic fans love to hate." For example, everyone hated the Grounded Story Arc of Superman, and for me it was one of my favorite stories. Sort of brought back memories of the old Superman serials I used to watch as a kid.

As far as Zenescope, Aspen, and Dynamite go, I used to let some of the looks the guys at the shop would give me get to me, but eventually I no longer cared, and after a while they quit caring too. If I want to pick up Robyn Hood or Soulfire then that was fine. Though to tell the truth with a lot of these books I turn to digital as well for the simple fact that they are cheaper.

@delphic: Ha. I was hating comics before I even considered myself a fan. So that's apt.

I think for me it's just a matter of not walking into an uncomfortable situation if I can easily avoid doing so. If reading on my iPad saves me from ever even having to think about defending myself or rolling my eyes, then I'll gladly do it (and if it saves me money, even better!). I read and watch and listen to and play things that I know a lot of friends and family would think less of me for, but I've come to grips with the fact that it is worthwhile and that if they actually took the time to give it a chance, they would change their minds as well.

The game Catherine is a great example, I think. The art and marketing for that game made it look like porn but I bought it and loved it and actually have gone out of my way to recommend it to people who were put off by the cover.

@mercy_: Nope. Got caught up reading other random things, like Fanboys vs. Zombies and Fatale (curse those Comixology sales). I've also been spending an inordinate amount of time trying to get that blog of mine looking like an actual, well, blog. With content.

@mercy_: Unsurprising. I have enjoyed everything of Brubaker's I've yet read. Thankfully reading it in trades will help with pricing, and pacing. The next book doesn't come out until next month.

You are compiling quite a list there, Monsieur Adam. I am sure you appreciate your friend "dumping" his trades now that you've seen for yourself how expensive it gets.

Your discussion with Delphic is interesting -- you should make a thread about it.
