Batman '66 Meets The Doctor

Batman '66 Meets Steed and Mrs Peel was a very enjoyable mini-series. I'd only seen a few episodes. Mostly the Dame Diana Rigg episodes and a few more of The New Avengers. I'd seen the film with Ralph Fiennes (Daniel Craig's new "M"), Uma Thurman and Sean Connery. Even though the reviews were not the best, I enjoyed it. I had no idea that Steed and Mrs. Peel had fought Cybernauts...kind of like The Doctor's Cybermen.

Which got me to wondering... What if Batman '66 met The Doctor?

But which Doctor would should it be?

Off the top of my head, I would suggest Jon Pertwee, The Third Doctor. Let me tell you why: Even though The Third Doctor began his tenure in 1970, a full two years after Batman '66 was canceled, this Doctor was much more flashy and colorful. He had a cool car. Oh, and his son Sean Pertwee is Alfred Pennyworth on Gotham. Yeah, kinda flimsy, I know.

I started watching Doctor Who with The Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston. He was The Invisible Man on Heroes. I had tried watching The Fourth Doctor, Tom Baker, on PBS in high school. He was running from The Daleks. No disrespect to longtime Doctor Who fans, but It just didn't connect with me. Until Doctor Who #101 - Rose. My wife suggested I give it a try. Everything about that episode clicked - especially when Rose Tyler asked who he was, and he told her. He didn't just say I'm The Doctor, he explained how he was Who he was.

But, really, which Doctor should it be? After seeing An Adventure in Space and Time, I'd say William Hartnell. But he's a little old to stand next to Adam West's Batman. So, I'm wondering if it should be The Fifth Doctor Peter Davidson; David Tennant's The Tenth Doctor; Eleven Matt Smith or even Eccleston's Nine. That might also be determined by the companion. Maybe Susan could develop a brief crush with Robin? Or maybe Rose? Or maybe Martha Jones?

So, I guess it's a couple of questions: Which Doctor and companion should Adam West's Batman meet? Secondly; Which Doctor Who villain and which member of the Batman '66 rogues gallery should team up? The Master (Which iteration?) and The Joker?

I'd love an anthology series of him meeting the first four Doctors, as the Fifth debuted in the 80's and seems too distant for me to envision. Anything beyond that I can't consider; they'd never have managed to get Adam West back in the cowl in the 90's or 2000's.

The first issue would have be Bill Hartnell and the Daleks, the second Patrick Troughton and the Cybermen, follow that with Pertwee and Delgado's Master (Having him team up with some of Batman's villains would be a nice touch, as he spent a whole season being a secondary antagonist accompanying the new villains of each storyline), and finally, to cap it off, bring back the Daleks, this time with Davros in tow.

Said first story could homage "An Unearthly Child" with Batman stumbling his way into the TARDIS, and Bill Hartnell being aloof, untrusting, and even outright malevolent at first.

My personal thought is that, while these stories could be very entertaining if they were to get made, If I were in control, I personally would never let a crossover happen unless it was obviously exceptional, since I can't reconcile at any point in its history Doctor Who being the kind of show that could crossover with Batman '66.

Well, said!

I think it would be interesting to see The Dynamic Duo teamed with one or more of the iterations of The Doctor. The First Doctor would be an interesting match. I wonder about The Third Doctor, because he seemed to be so much more colorful than the first two. Then, thinking Time Travel, any one of The Doctors could be pulled back toward '66 for an adventure.

But really what it comes to is: What story would sell books. A six-issue series, with The Four Doctors and their prime rogues - there would have to be a through-line to tie it all together. As a fan of Batman '66, I'd be there. Parker has done fantastic work. So have the Allreds.

I've always viewed the Batman '66 comics (Despite never having read them) as being a "What if the series had continued and not ended?" sort of deal, which is partially why I limited it to the first four - they fit the timeframe more than the others.

In the real world, the show lasted from 66-69, leaving the two available Doctors as Hartnell and Troughton. I included Pertwee and Baker because it would still be conceivable for a special to be made in the early 70's.

I agree with you about Pertwee, his outfits and the various gadgets, along with the increased focus on action, definitely made his period stand out more than the previous two.

I'd argue for Tom Baker a lot, just because of the time period in which a majority of his stories were written by Douglas Adams; for better or for worse, that period was probably the most humour oriented of the show.

Just to give reference on my whole timeframe views, I personally found it a bit of a stretch for the crossover between '66 and Wonder Woman '77... In my opinion, too much time had passed in order to actually have a relevant crossover.

Of course, you are absolutely correct. Time travel as a plot point would allow any Doctor to participate; it might be nice to see Sylvester McCoy engaging in an umbrella duel with the Penguin. And no matter which Doctor was in it, I'd definitely give it a look.

There was a bit of a letdown with Batman/Wonder Woman. The explanation was that after WWII she went back to Paradise Island - and seclusion. Which explains how she came back in '77 for the next season on CBS. There was a turn around in '77 - Bruce had "retired" and passed on the baton to Nightwing. That team-up and the Bionic Woman team-up were pretty much set to tie in to the movie. Probably same with the upcoming Conan team-up.

I'm thinking if Titan Comics was smart, they'd be all over an inter-company crossover team-up! But, that's just an opinion. :)

(I'm kinda hoping that there may be a '66 Justice League coming, rather than a '77 Justice League. But then, there's those '79 specials that Mr. West and Mr. Ward were part of... I'd rather see Adam West and George Reeves team-up!)
