Around the World

I found a handful of my dad's old comic books from the Philippines in my attic as a kid, even before I knew what comic books were!  All I saw were a whole bunch of pictures that reminded me of cartoons I loved like G.I. Joe or He-Man.  I fell in love with the comic book concept before I even knew what I was looking at.

Well, I eventually found out that these comic books were really popular here in America, so I asked my parents to pick up my first American title.  I used to be fluent in Tagalog as a young child, but I forgot the language after using English all the time in grade school. I still have those Filipino comic books, but I can't read them... I really would love to learn another language so I can tap into a whole new realm of comics from around the world!  I saw various posts here on Comic Vine, but after seeing posts like TerryMcC's topic " Thor in the Philippines in 1957," I really want to get reconnected with my parents' cultural roots.  Thank you, comic books, you will always have a special place in my heart!

2000+ comics worth of back issues!

I've been collecting comics since 1989 and I've got tons of books that I've read once or twice... Now that I've reconnected with Comic Vine, I can read my back issues, then share them everybody who checks out the site.  Thanks, Comic Vine!  You have led me to re-experience old story arcs and have given my old back issues another chance to shine!

Richmond, Virginia Comic Convention!

In my 20 year relationship with comic books, I have never been to a convention before!  I just recently started getting reconnected with my inner geek, and when I dropped by my favorite comic shop ( Atlantis Games & Comics), I noticed a flyer by the register.  It had Batman leaping over "VA" with COMICON.com running across the front.  I saw that it was advertising something on May 23rd in Richmond.  I picked it up and learned about the Central Virginia Comicon.  I've always wanted to go to comicons, but they were always so far away, like San Diego or Philly.  Now it's in Richmond on May 23, 2010?!  I think I'm finally gonna go to my first one...

If any of y'all are experienced with going to comicons, I'm anxiously awaiting any suggestions for my first experience!

Graphic Novels

I used to love reading trade paperbacks that would collect a story arc when I was 8 years old because I could finally get the whole story instead of trying to trade issues with my friends and only get parts of the story.  Now that I'm 28, I've really come to appreciate the graphic novel.  I remember reading Brian K. Vaughn and Niko Henrichon 's Pride of Baghdad after I had come home from Operation Iraqi Freedom and being amazed at how the art of storytelling through comic books has really grown.  I just recently picked up Greg Pak and Carmine Di Giandomenico's X-Men: Magneto Testament and I really was blown away.  The historical and cultural accuracy in today's comic books are simply amazing.  I'm probably going to stick to the comics in my pull, but I'll start treating myself to a graphic novel once a month!

Correlation between work and comics

No Caption Provided
Man, I haven't been able to follow what's going on in the comic book multiverse for a hot minute now!  The last time I actively read comic books was around Marvel's Civil War.  Just recently though, I've been offered a full-time position with the Virginia Army National Guard starting on June 1, 2010 and I just recently got a part time job as a mental health technician that I can do on the side as well.  That means that I'll be starting to bring in a bigger paycheck.  That means that I can start buying comics again.  I just went by my favorite shop  Atlantis Games & Comics ( http://www.atlantis-comics.com/ ) for new comic book day and I realized that I'm way behind.  I'm going to slowly start picking up titles to read again.  I used to read a lot of Marvel titles like Thunderbolts, Hulk, and X-Men, but I want to branch out this time around.  I'm going to pick up some TPBs and I'm open to suggestions for any new titles to read.  Thanks for dropping by and reading my first blog !
