@erik_soong: Ok dude. You win. I lose. I hope you don't really feel that way about me. Your making some nasty claims about who I am as a person based on two posts on a comic book web site. Even then I was just defending my interpretation of the rules by critiquing your arguments and offered no insults to you. But what ever.

@_gaff_: Scenarios are listed under "types of battles" in the rules. They are an allowed exception.

  • Scenarios - These involve characters or teams fighting to complete an opposing task. The difference between this and a "competition" is that there is combat involved. The goal is to complete the task (or prevent the other from completing their task), but it comes down to combat abilities and / or tactics.
    • Examples: hostage rescue, robbery, bodyguard vs. assassin, etc.

I don't see how this is an exception to the "Characters have to originate from an officially published work of media." Rule. Its saying you can make threads like "Can Batman stop Deathstroke from killing the president" or "Can Spide-Man save these hostages guarded by the Sinister Six".

Nowhere does it say it is an exception to this rule. As with the other battle types it is listed with, it is describing a way to make a thread where characters ("...from an officially published work of media.") do battle with each other.

But like I said. The Mod who wrote the rules does not seem to mind. So whatever.

The scenarios are an exception by their very inclusion in the rules. If scenarios were not legal because of their character creation portion, then they would not be listed under "types of battles" in the first place. These scenarios have been around longer than those rules anyway and they are a staple of the site since when I and some others started brought them here in 2013. There has been dozens upon dozens of scenarios and most are build-a-character games.

Scenarios did not necessarily need to be like the examples you have fabricated. Again, I should know, as I was one of the originators of the concept, along with a few other users like Dane, who is also in this game. One of the battles of the week was my very successful scenario thread, which Jedi was a judge of. Very few scenarios have been used in the way you describe. They are deeply involved threads that involve participant users, not just a gangbang of random posters like in most threads.

Do you feel validated yet or can we put this to bed?

First off. I think your getting a little to upset about this. I'm not trying to ruin you fun. Just interpreting the rules the way they are written.

That being said, my argument is actually based on the Letter of the Law. If there is a rule to which there is no expressly written exception to, one must assume that rule applies without exception.

Your arguments however are not based on the wording of the law.

"These scenarios have been around longer than those rules anyway and they are a staple of the site since when I and some others started brought them here in 2013. "

Yes. Many (in fact all) Banned battles were around before there were rules that retroactively banned them.

"The scenarios are an exception by their very inclusion in the rules. If scenarios were not legal because of their character creation portion, then they would not be listed under "types of battles" in the first place...There has been dozens upon dozens of scenarios and most are build-a-character games. Lets read the language again.

The portion I underlined is a reference to this other rule.

Make Sure It Is a Battle

Before we talk about what is a battle, let’s list what isn’t a battle.

General competitions.

  • Example: “Reed Richards vs. Tony Stark at chess,”

So your argument is that Scenarios were not intended to be created for published characters. But it does not say that anywhere. These rules were well thought out. Don't you think the author would state that "its ok to use player created characters" or something like that to describe what a Scenario battle is? In fact, the author is so concerned that scenarios will be confused with competitions ,which he/she used published characters as an example, that he/she goes out of the way to differentiate that combat and or tactics are necessary. Nothing about creating characters.

Again, I should know, as I was one of the originators of the concept, along with a few other users like Dane, who is also in this game. One of the battles of the week was my very successful scenario thread, which Jedi was a judge of.

I glad you and these other fine viners are having fun. But this comment has no barring on the actual language of the rules.

Very few scenarios have been used in the way you describe.

I have been a member of comic vine since 2013. and I can recall seeing many scenario battles that involved published characters. But again, this has nothing to do with the interpretation of the written rules.

They are deeply involved threads that involve participant users, not just a gangbang of random posters like in most threads.

Yes. I am sure much thought goes into them. But I fail to see how disparaging other threads (gangbangs as you call them) aids your interpretation of the rules.

Lets just settle it this way. If I'm right, no worries. If your right, I will admit I was wrong and apologize for taking up your time.

@jedixman Which one of us has the most accurate interpretation based on the written rules?

Why is this in Battles and not in RPG?

Scenarios always have been in battles due to the nature of the games, which is to debate.

Ok. it is technically against the rules.

No Fake Characters

Do not make up a character, like "Me with Superman's powers vs Thor," or a fan fic character that you made up. Characters have to originate from an officially published work of media.

Battle Forum Rules 3.0

But who cares.

Just curious what people think.

Become a villain? Join the Bat-family? What?
