Dark Days Ahead? Talk About Self-Fulfilling! 1

I'm still kind of shocked after reading this issue because it was just bad. Shockingly, surprisingly, terrifyingly bad. I always liked Green Lantern and enjoyed Johns' run, even if I rarely loved it but the drop of quality from the monster #20 issue to this one is astounding. The problem lies mostly in the writing. I haven't read anything else by Venditti so I wasn't sure what to expect. The issue consists of five scenes.Scene 1: An "In Medias Res" moment that is supposed to bring some opening s...

Exciting, even without any kings actually dying 0

I'm actually quite glad "Throne of Atlantis" is over because it was such a rollercoaster ride, including the lows. I'm all set for a new Aquaman arc as I feel he has a lot of potential. This new arc starts intriguing enough. The opening mystery earthquake is quite effective despite being a cliché. Arthur dealing with Murk and Tula is full of interesting character bits, although the good old "humans are flawed and self-destructive" is tiring, especially when no one ever tries to actually answer wh...

Definitely Deconstruction 0

It's one thing to note that this is not Jonathan Hickman's Ultimates anymore. It's another to see just how bad this series has become. Gradually, the Ultimates became worse and worse, taking a sharp turn to the bottom with issues 18.1 and 19, arriving at a new low with this no.20.The writing is embarrassing. Plot points are either elaborately explained or not mentioned at all. The structure is all over the place, making the appearance of Susan Storm and Thor seem like a mistake. The dialogue is ...

The Boring and the Worn-Out and the Really Tedious 0

I liked the first issue a lot (as did everyone else). The second issue was good, too but with the third I felt some fatigue. Now this issue goes way over the top. Why would I still want to see Deadpool killing dead presidents? For four issues? Really? The same jokes in different variations, again and again and again. You know there is a problem when you read a joke, appreciate its creativity but feel no desire to be amused. It's just too much. The art is also still good but it's still just more ...

Believe What Exactly? 0

This has finally put a nail into my coffin for the new volume of Iron Man. I didn't like Fraction/Larroca's run and was hoping for a good one with Gillen. But after three mediocre issues this one is just horrible. The story is incredibly stupid and silly. The whole arc is not very thought out because hunting Extremis (which is abstract enough) in another location against different people is not an arc in the first place. It feels more and more like Tony randomly fighting bad guys for a reason tha...

What's in a Savage? 0

The star rating does not entirely reflect my impression of this comic book. In some ways I liked it a lot, in other I despised it. It's a strange mixture.Palmiotti and Gray are generally good storytellers. They know their way around dialogue and plots, are entertaining and funny without being dumb. This is all evident in this book. The story is suspenseful and has a nice few twists. So, on a purely entertainment basis, this is solid work. The art is good and does what it needs to do. There are so...

Not yet united 0

Somehow I thought the crossover was "Divided We Fall", but here's "United We Stand", which seems to be even bigger. But let's not discuss crossover politics, this doesn't matter anyway for this issue. The story is okay, but feels a bit like a filler between important events. It's nice enough but it doesn't feel like there's actually much going on. And somehow the addition of Nick Fury feels like a distraction for me. It's meant to connect the different comics but it feels like this is the only r...

The Merc Without a Point 3

Last week I was a bit confused by this comic, this week I'm just disgusted. It's cynical, nihilistic crap. Its entertainment value is supposed to come out of seeing "our superheroes" getting killed, even if their deaths are totally out of character and not cool at all. The heroes behave like scared kids without a plan. We have seen them survive any kind of ordeal but they don't stand a chance against Deadpool for no reason. Well, one reason – the title of this comic says so.There is no fun, just...

The horror, the horror 1

This is so weird. I really like the story here. Ivy forcing the others to save the Earth is a nice twist (even if it makes saving the Earth seem less important because of Ivy's drastic measures, but that's a given in our culture). The plot isn't perfectly developed, but it works. But the art! The last three pages are among the worst art I have ever seen in a comic book. It's terribly inconsistent, with no background or facial expressions and looks ridiculous. Is this a joke? What's even worse is t...

No Surprises (But Such a Pretty Garden) 1

I was interested in reading this graphic novel but after a couple of pages I wondered what the big deal is. Yes, it's another origin story, so every character gets a slight tweak so we can say "Oh, they're like this now!" But I didn't find that particularly interesting, especially because the tweaks were so minor and eventually lead to the same results we know already. After a while, though, the book got more suspenseful and I couldn't stop reading. The conflict between Bullock and Gordon became ...

Shocking as in 'Oh, okay then' 2

Action Comics is definitely a mixed bag. There is always some fun dialog and interesting ideas but in the end the question what the point of it all is, remains. In this issue again it feels like too much with too little real explanation or connection. The terribly old-fashioned announcements that DC still juses on its covers don't help at all. "The shocking revelation behind his new secret identity" sounds fairly overdramatic but reading the conversation between Superman and Batman redefines the ...

No Wizardry here 0

"The Flash" has had a pretty solid run since The New 52. Except for one issue (The Flash #6), every issue was convincing in story and art, especially the latter. It was noticeable that artist and writer were the same as each page was carefully designed and layed out. Now, the first thing to notice in this issue is the different artist. It's not so much that the art is bad, but it just doesn't fit in the flawless run that the art had before. Marcus To isn't doing anything wrong, he just isn't the ...
