Invincible in the Marvel Universe

No Caption Provided

Someone had once brought up the topic of Wonder Woman in the Marvel universe, and I thought it was an interesting idea. A member named Delphic ran with it and created a list, and it gave me the idea to create a couple of lists that showcase some of my favorite characters under the care of different publishers.

First off: Mark Grayson, Invincible. What would Mark Grayson do in the Marvel universe? Who would he interact with? I have an idea of how that might turn out, so here is a list of potential allies and villains that may help or hinder Mark in his life. If he knows he can't go back to his world, would he be able to find his place in this one? Let's find out.

List items

  • Steve was one of the first people to greet Mark when he first appeared in their universe, and the one who's had the biggest impact on his superhero lifestyle. To Mark, Steve is the kind of hero that his dad was pretending to be: morally upstanding, brave, and always putting the needs of the common man before anything else. With that said, the two don't always see things on the same level, and there are times when Mark believes he and the Avengers are too lenient on villains like Doctor Doom and M.O.D.O.K. Steve still hasn't given up on trying to get Mark to understand that just because they have power, doesn't mean that they have the authority to police the world. Their relationship is like that of a teacher and their student.

  • There is no one around with a more confusing moral compass than Tony Stark- or at least that's how Mark sees things. Although he's impressed with how Tony uses his status as both a business mogul and Avenger to foster peace in the world, but his rich playboy attitude leaks out at times, and that's the side that Mark hates. Tony has tried several times to get Mark to loosen up and attend a couple of sleazy parties with him. Mark has yet to say yes.

  • Mark has a couple of problems with known killers siding with the good guys and thinking they won't have to be expected to stand trial for their crimes, and unfortunately, Wolverine fits the description. Despite all this, Mark finds Logan's determination to do the right thing and help the next generation find the right path extremely admirable, and has a deep respect for him. They don't team up often though, and are often called on different missions. Logan fights ninjas, mutants and superpowered mass murderers; Mark fights world destroying aliens, cartoon-ish supervillains, and planetary threats.

  • Like Captain America, Captain Marvel has taken Invincible under her wing and shows him the universe. She introduces him to the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Shi'ar Empire, the Kree, the Brood- she takes him everywhere. Mark has an unshakeable respect for Carol, and after learning her life's story, earned the nickname "smartass" when he asked why she didn't just call herself Captain Marvel as soon as the original died. Whenever he needs help off-planet, Carol is the first person Mark calls.

  • T'Challa and Mark share a mutual respect; Mark respects T'Challa for being able to balance his duties as a conqueror, a superhero, a diplomat and his status as one of the top ten smartest people on Earth, and T'Challa finds Mark's persistent idealism in the face of their often cynical world admirable. The two don't get together often, and for good reason (in Mark's eyes). To him, T'Challa is terrifying because of the things he's capable of doing if he expanded his view beyond Wakanda. He'd never say it with Steve Rogers in earshot, but Mark considers T'Challa as one of the greatest people he's ever met, for both his mind and his capabilities.

  • Mark and Pete had met once before during his first fight against Angstrom Levy, and the two of them hit it off immediately. Here on this alternate Earth, Peter is one of the few people Mark sees as confidantes. They've fought together multiple times, and Mark usually ends up teaming up with Pete whenever he's in New York. He'd never admit it, but Mark thinks Pete is the funniest superhero out there. He wouldn't ever tell him, however, because the last thing he needs is for his best superhero friend to turn himself into a self-indulgent jackass. At this point, many of the other superheroes are convinced that Mark and Pete share the same rogues gallery.

  • One of Invincible's closest friends, along with Spider-Man, Black Widow, and Captain America. The Odinson and Mark have fought side by side several times, and as one of the only people who can match him blow for blow, Mark is usually there to calm him down whenever Thor gets worked up. He has earned Thor's respect as one of Captain America's many proteges (and Carol Danvers' only protege) and the God of Thunder has tried many times to get the Viltrumite to have a drink with him in Asgard sometime. The answer is always no, but the fact that he's invited is a good indicator that he's not in danger of getting a hammer through the face.

  • Mark and Thanos have a sort of one-sided hatred going on between them. To the Mad God, Invincible is just another one of the roaches- extremely tough to kill, but alone proves no threat at all. In Invincible's eyes, however, Thanos is an immortal titan who thinks that he deserves the power that he wields, and has a serious problem, what with the whole "trying to get in Death's pants" thing he keeps going on about. The two have butt heads on occasion, and despite knowing that Thanos can overwhelm him with his intelligence and numbers, with his many followers supporting him, Mark takes him on again and again.

  • Here is the man who has managed to drive a wedge between Mark and the many superheroes of Earth, along with S.H.I.E.L.D. The fact that the dictator of Latveria still remains free and the ruler of of an entire nation despite his many crimes against America, and the world. If anyone were to qualify as one of Invincible's primary supervillains, then Victor von Doom is the very antithesis of everything Mark stands for. One such incident that established this was the day that Invincible, enraged by Victor's passive role in a recent attack on American soil, stormed Doom's castle and destroyed many of his Doombots. Unfortunately, Doom discovered one of Mark's few weaknesses within the first few seconds of their fight, and immediately put the Viltrumite down. Mark was rescued at the last minute by the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, and She-Hulk, but that fight has had a great impact on Mark's way of thinking. He understands why taking non-sanctioned action against Doom is a dumb movie, but he still thinks that the tyrant needs to be taken down hard.

  • The Guardians and Invincible have teamed up on several occasions- whether it was against the Chitauri, or against Peter Quill's father, the Emperor of Spartax, the Brood, and many other threats. Their opinions on Mark differ from teammate to teammate, for better or worse. Star-Lord took Carol's praise for Mark to heart, and thinks that he has proven himself a capable guy with a good head on his shoulders. Rocket Raccoon doesn't much care for the guy, Drax considers Mark a warrior worthy of fighting at his side, and Gamora has taken a special interest in the Viltrumite; an interest that is completely one-sided, considering that Mark has admitted to Peter Quill that Gamora terrifies him and actively tries to avoid her. Groot, on the other hand, has many positive things to say about him. Unfortunately, the only one he said it to was Rocket, and he doesn't care enough to repeat it.

  • Invincible and She-Hulk first met when he was captured by M.O.D.O.K., along with Lyra, Silk and Amadeus Cho. Jen, who was operating under the assumption that Lyra and Amadeus were the only ones taken, tracked them down with the help of Spider-Woman and Delphyne. After Mark and the others were freed, and the others joined in to promptly kick the collective asses of M.O.D.O.K. and the defective clones he'd made from their DNA, he thanked Jen and flew off. Since then, Mark has been coming to Jen whenever he needs help with the legal ramifications of beating up a supervillain with access to a lawyer who actually knows what they're doing, and for the occasional team-up. Mark is actually jealous of how she doesn't have to worry about a secret identity, her confidence, and her self control. She's actually been teaching him ways to keep his anger under control, and schools him on legal matters whenever he needs help defending why he had to break a supervillain's face. Which turns out to be pretty often.

  • Most people consider the Hulk to be a menace, while others see him as a misunderstood giant. In Mark's eyes, Robert Bruce Banner is a brilliant man who could serve the world in ways that not even he could imagine. On the other side of that, however, is the Hulk, whom Invincible sees as an indestructible kid with serious issues. The two met when a reactivated sentinel attacked Los Angeles, and they teamed up to take it down. Afterwards, Invincible tried talking to the Hulk as he leaped outside of the city limits. It took a while, but eventually the two ended up at the Grand Canyon, just sitting there until he reverted back to Bruce Banner. No one knows what happened, only that the Hulk considers Invincible to be one of his only friends.

  • Mark and Natasha have always known each other, but never had any reason to get to know one another. One day Natasha, after learning what happened to him in Latveria, manipulated Mark into helping her take down a hostile Nuhuman in a small village in South Korea after the events of Infinity. Their encounter lead to them finding that the Nuhuman was being manipulated by her father, and that she refused to go against him. Against her wishes, Mark tried talking down the father and convincing him to free his daughter of her obligations. Much to Natasha's surprise, this worked; and afterwards, the two ended up going on more covert missions together, coming closer as a result. Mark and Natasha have a complicated relationship: he doesn't agree with her methods, and she thinks he doesn't realize the risks of what they do. Regardless, the two make a good team, and they trust each other. Invincible and Black Widow: World's Finest. Definitely not plagiarism.

  • One of the many cheerful faces Mark has to look forward to whenever he's in space, he and the Accuser have had their share of disagreements, which usually leads to Ronan pissing off Invincible, and Invincible deciding to shut him up. He has yet to find a Kree he actually likes (unless you count Carol), and Ronan doesn't exactly find Mark likeable either.

  • When he first met Spider-Man, the two of them fought and defeated Doc Ock together. Then when Invincible learned he was stuck here, the doctor became a recurring enemy, quickly becoming as much Mark's arch enemy as he was Peter's. At first the two hated each other, but as one thwarted attempt at domination led to twelve, Mark eventually realized that Ock just wanted to help change the world. His only problem was that there was no one there to rein him in whenever he had a bad idea, so Mark offered to be that person. When Mark left the planet to deal with problems in space, Doc took his advice the wrong way, and this led to him taking over Peter Parker's body, becoming the Superior Spider-Man. Since Peter regained his body, Mark has yet to forgive himself for not being there to curb the doctor. Although "Spider-Man" has been barred from Parker Industries, Invincible has given public support for their plan to build a better, more effective prison for supervillains. In spite of it all, Mark still believes that Ock had the potential to do something great for the people. That didn't mean he was any less of a lunatic, though.

  • "Crusher" Creel and Invincible have had their fair share of fights, and each time it's ended with Creel face down in the dirt. Absorbing Man and Titania were actually Invincible's first official supervillain fights when he appeared publicly for the very first time, so he's "sentimental" when it comes to them.

  • Even though the woman is a monster, Mark stills has hang-ups about knocking her out. She-Hulk keeps telling him that he has her permission to fly her into space, but he's still not 100% okay with it.

  • Allen the Alien and Gladiator have so much in common that it is near impossible for Mark not to draw a comparison between the two of them. Invincible has a deep respect for Gladiator, a respect that is shared by the former guard. Just like Carol, whenever there is trouble that requires heavy hitters, Gladiator calls on Invincible.

  • Cindy Moon and Mark Grayson first met in their civilian identities, introduced to one another by Peter Parker when Invincible had come to Pete about M.O.D.O.K. kidnapping young superhumans. Cindy and Mark hit it off almost immediately, and during their attempt to find and put a stop to M.O.D.O.K. they got to know each other better. With some nudging from Peter and Jessica, the two of them decided to resolve the tension between them and have grown close. They both enjoy not having to lie about what they're doing to the other, but Cindy doesn't exactly like how half the time he's in space with "countless alien women to choose from, and one blonde".

  • Invincible and Kl'rt have met many times, and each time neither of them know whether or not it will end with one at the other's throat, or the two of them fighting together.
