Were last week in Power Girl #27, the series finale; and this week in JLA Retro-Active:  The 90s.

Power Girl #27 provided a fitting ending to the series, if any such could be had so soon, with PG using her brains as well as her brawn to defeat Calculator, who is trying to profile her.  The book as written it seems without knowledge that it would be the series finale, and it shows, but in a good way.  There's none of the self-conscious "last issue" writing we usually get in such circumstances.  It is in fact, while not enitrely without flaws, (Sturges' weakness in plotting comes to mind), is a nice character piece for PG, and one of the best done-in-one efforts in a long time.

Retro-Active OTOH, was of course a nostalgic call-back to simpler, (and funnier), times.  The gang is at their top form here, but for a number of reasons that they had no control over; it was considerably sadder in the end.  Unfortunately, no comic book reader reads a book like this in isolation, which is ideally how it should be read---as if the reader had stepped right out of the early to mid 90s, entirely skipping everything that happened in comics, (and out), in between.  This is not possible of course for most people, and so we read this book knowing which beloved characters have died in the meantime, and which are likely making their final appearances.  PG among the latter, at least for some little while, and possibly forever as we now know her.

There are in fact two stories in this book.  The first deals with...ah, who cares what it deals with!  It's really about the final new story of the "Bwa-Ha-Ha" League!  And as such, it doesn't disappoint.  PG and her cat play a key role, (her Cat, named "Theodore" BTW, to Booster's everlasting enjoyment---and Mr. Miracle loves it too; actually defeats the big villain, if there can be said to be such).  And in fact, the rest of the JLI seem more frightened of Power Girl's Cat than of the monster tearing up the city.  Some sort of subtle or not so subtle commentary?

Who knows, who cares?  In the end, there is no end, at least not in this story, as the gang fly off into the sunset.  The second story OTOH, is a much darker, but still "Bwa-Ha-Ha" League story, showing the actual range they went through back in the day.  It seems to be a retelling of the end of the "Breakdowns" saga, with differing viewpoints and added panels.  Dimitri at one point has a particularly telling comment about family and the Justice League that sort of sums up the entire Giffen League era, and parts of the Bronze Age JSA stuff as well.  It also serves, if you so view it, as a comment on what the DCnU seems to be entirely missing.

Power Girl in this one is limited to a single page, where she confronts Guy over the leadership of the JLA, in her horrible period yellow outfit.  Beyond that, we have stuff like Ted fixing the Bug, to the comments of Dimitri's kids, "Why are you so fat?"  We see J'ohn leaving, and Max, (yeah, Max!), reforming the League.

So, lift a glass to Power Girl and nicer times gone by, because outside of a few non-continuity things like the DCU Online book, you won't see Kara Zor-L again for a long time, if ever.

I'll preserve her character in my fanfic-verse. While based mainly on the DCAU, I'm going to transition Galatea into being their version of PG.

I'm interested to see what her role will be in Mr. Terrific's book and what her relationship with him will be.
