    Power Girl

Character » Power Girl appears in 1628 issues.

Supergirl's older, wiser, and stronger counterpart from Earth 2, Power Girl, can be found fighting crime with the likes of Huntress and the Justice Society of America.

    A costume that works

When someone like Catwoman or She-Hulk wears something sexy, we don't seem to have a problem with it because they're both very flirtatious and like to show what they've got. We could argue about what's attractive and what's tacky, but that's neither here nor their. Power Girl, though, usually acts very self-conscious about people looking at her, so it doesn't make sense that she'd wear an outfit with a boob window.

I for one like this look. I think the open collar does wonders for it. Just adds an air of more modesty, but still keeping the overall classic look without compromising it too much and making it seem more like something she'd wear.

On one hand I like the art above and the outfit is fine. On the other I really do like Power Girl's iconic outfit.

I don't find Power Girl overly concerned about her appearance. She accepts sincere compliments and has great sense of confidence in her self and abilities. It never felt like she was a bashful blushing character forced into a outfit. She feels a bit flirty with winks and poses and actions. At times she might be a bit annoyed by lecherous behavior, but I don't see that as modesty. I suppose have to see examples why you feel she "usually acts very self-conscious".

First the artist did a good job with this picture, if it was you congratulations for this picture. It depends actually. I personally i dont mind if she had Power Girl version of the New 52 Supergirl´s costume without Kryptonean Symbol and dont think boob window is really necessary anymore it isnt like she uses breats to distract her opponents or uses her looks as weapon. But the costume above looks good. Power Girl is often not taken serious because her boob window by lot of readers.

Pretty good job. As the two button cape-stay, and hf son "S" ,shield---ought to be blue, and you've got it. It's one of those things that immediately stands out, and just work well.

What does everyone think of her New Earth 2 costume? With the Superman S shield? Like the costume pictured above, I'd also give her leggings.

@artisticneedham: If this was for Linda Danvers as Supergirl? Fine! As it stands? I don't care for it for Karen, especially since she's being rebranded as Superwoman..... Despite one of her character traits being NOT wanting to be considered a derivative of Superman and the fact pretty much EVERY Superwoman beforehand has been a villain.

It is...okay, but I not crazy about the iconic "S" and making her feel more derivative of Superman as opposed to standing more on her own. Even a "P" would have been a sort of meeting them half way. More curious about characterization which I wasn't crazy about in New 52 issues I read.

Thing is, she IS derivative of Superman, and there's nothing really wrong with that. Call her a variation on a theme. Which of course makes her characterization paramount, since her powers are pretty much identical to Superman's. But like I badly mistyped above, I would make her "S" blue to visually distinguish her more from the more mainstream Superman Family characters. And frankly, leggings.

You can be derivative and it not feel like a "knock off" though. For example in Batman he has Robin (or even Nightwing) who despite being side kick or derivative have distinct identities. I always found "Well, the hero is Z-Man, so we can have Z-boy, Z-Woman, and Z-Girl" to be the laziest character creation. With Superman I found Supergirl and Superboy to live far more in his shadow due to naming and design choices. Meanwhile Power Girl has felt more akin to Robin, similar but has her own thing. To a casual observer Power Girl has a distinct name and look compared to Supergirl who gets "Oh, it is Superman...but female" reaction. The "S" means "Super" (No, I don't care if decades later someone decided it was house of El or meant hope or what ever, it is an S). Why I suggested a "P" as at the very least gives her some distance to be her own character. Having the S just feels lazy like she is part of the Superman corp or something.

On leggings or covering more that comes down to characterization. I think female super heroes deal with a lot of crap male counterparts don't because their design and costume goes under a social microscope. Some characters cover up, some show more skin, the point for me is how it fits with the character and story. Powergirl to me is comfortable and confident enough to not worry either way so never bother me.

They tried the "P", and no one could make it work, it was just too assymetrical and didn't look right. It all comes down to marketing the character...DC had decided that they want to put her as part of the Superman Family, which she is. Even though several character not of either the House of "L" or the House of "El" have also worn the "S"...Connor Superboy, Steel, Krypto and other Super pets...

My reasons for adding the legging go to more practical areas....

I threw out "P" given she now has an "S" it could easily be a symbol too. Flash, doesn't have an "F", has a lightning bolt. For Power Girl could have a design akin to Green Lantern and say it is a Kryptonian symbol of power or justice or something allowing for creativity and symmetrical design. I'm more just not crazy about the "S", and have always been fine with how her costume was in her solo run.

Practically Power Girl would wear next to nothing as her skin is tougher than any fabric so every fight would see it shredded or burned off. Super hero costume designs are more about image and personality than practicality of wearing skin tight outfit or heels while you're in a fight. Again, not concerned as long as it looks cool.

PG doesn't need a symbol. Not all superhero characters have symbols. Wonder Woman and Aquaman, Black Canary, Green Arrow, Wildcat, Zatanna, Huntress, half of LSH, Firestorm - all have no symbols. They are recognized by their costumes. The costumes are symbols. PG's exceptional physique used to be her symbol when they drew her that way.

    @bloggerboy How easily we forget.

It's pretty easy to forget, given that she's at one of her periodic lows in terms of panel time. SG's getting promoed like crazy what with her TV show, but PG's almost entirely just a memory, save for a bad comic that isn't even really about her that we've already seen anyway, and the continuation of Earth 2, inferior in essentially every way to the Johns-penned JSA title.

Her costume doesn't even really matter at this point, what with each and every panel she's in being a victory of sorts for the character these days.

I agree, my remarks were mostly in regard to the comic giving her Superman's "S" symbol. I like her design and costume as it was before the "New 52".

Powergirl not getting promoted is the reason Powergirl isn't popular, not her lack of a symbol. She has the "S" now and she's stuck on Earth 2 in a clone of the JLA.

What is the "bad comic that isn't even really about her that we've already seen"?

@powergirlfan: It's the Harley Quinn/Power Girl thing. Its a mix of Harley because she's the one who is popular, and that old Vartox stuff Palmiotti, Gray, and Connor thought was sooo funny, along with a PG who almost seems drugged, she's that detached. It was kind of cute the first time they did it, just not enough to warrant doing it again.

You'll note I had already reached the conclusion that her costume, (the entire thing), no longer mattered, so low was her level of promotion. It was a perfect storm of things that killed any push she might have gotten. Perhaps in another 15 years or so the pendulum will have swung around and PG will be in a position to get at least some minor story time again, if not a full on monthly or gasp, the TV appearances that most of DC's other comparable characters have already had.

For now though, she's basically on the shelf.

It fixes the problem of the boob window, while still being sexy and it also changes the swimsuit aspect of the costume which I dislike in heroines.

I think the New 52 rework was perfectly fine, it fixed the bit weird belt and the one sided cape...the boob window is her trademark and related to her character theres really nothing wrong with that.

@achilles100: Yeah Levitz obviously hated the character based on how he wrote her in Worlds Finest and some higher ups at DC must agree with him with giving her name to some random character and shipping her off to be a minor character in Earth 2.

But even if you don't like Harley/PeeGee, you have to thank Palmiotti and Connor. They seem to be the only people at DC that care about Power Girl. And like you said, any attention to the character is needed.

Across several forms of media I see this. In video games there seems to be a reluctance to put Power Girl even at B-Tier (why was she not in Injustice?). She is definitely facing an uphill battle for visibility, much less getting full fleshed out stories.

Well, it does have the 40s-50s vibe. And she looks great as a Marilyn type, we've already seen that with Darwyn Cook's old sketch...he too cast her as Monroe. Sometimes I wonder if she wouldn't work better in a JSA book set in the 40s or 50s.

I'd certainly read a JSA book in a parallel 30's-50's Earth with Power Girl as Marilyn Monroe.

WW and Aquaman kind of do have symbols.

Guide through the years, 2009 still represents my favorite, others are solid, and some, not so great
