Charles Little Sky belonged to the same Native American tribe as the werecat known as Puma, and when his mutant powers began to manifest, Puma attempted to help. He wasn't open to any such help, though, so he instead fled to New York. Puma tracked him down but did so in the presence of the Avengers, causing a confrontation. This became worse when Little Sky opened a portal to escape and unintentionally released the U-Foes from a dimension where they had been trapped. As Little Sky traveled through dimensions, he picked up various weapons for his own protection from the places he visited. He eventually encountered an alien calling himself Kistur, who wore Raptor armor of the same sort as Darkhawk. Kistur attempted to force Little Sky to join his criminal gang but met with resistance. Little Sky got a lucky shot and dislodged the amulet from Kistur's chest, seeming to kill him.

Adding to his collection of weaponry, Little Sky chose to take Kistur's armor for himself but discarded the amulet.

    Creation

The character of Portal was created by Danny Fingeroth. First, the character debut as Charles Little Sky in an issue of Avengers, and Fingeroth then introduced him as Portal in issue 5 of Darkhawk.

    Character Evolution

Portal began as an accidental villain, coming into conflicts with heroes either through misunderstanding or circumstances outside of his control. He was quickly developed into a heroic ally of Darkhawk's. The character faded into obscurity with the end of Darkhawk's ongoing series.

Years later, Fred Van Lente dusted the character off and established him as Director Little Sky, putting him in charge of A.R.M.O.R.

Little Sky eventually returned to Earth and coincidentally emerged from a portal inside a museum that Chris Powell and his family were touring. Upon seeing Powell transformed into Darkhawk, Little Sky mistook him for an ally of Kistur and attacked. The fight ended with Little Sky being defeated and hospitalized. More criminals besides Kistur saw Little Sky as something to be exploited. The U-Foes came for him while he was still in the hospital, wanting him to take them to a certain dimension they found during their earlier exile. He was defended by Captain America, Daredevil and Darkhawk. Afterwards, he fled through one of his own portals. But soon after he was captured by the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Toad had Sauron brainwash him so that he would aid them however they wanted. Once again, he was saved by other heroes. Spider-Man, Darkhawk and Sleepwalker freed him from the Brotherhood's control.

Portal, as Little Sky had come to be known as, grew into an ally of Darkhawk's. He allied with Darkhawk when Kistur was reanimated in a new android body called Overhawk. Together, they were able to defeat Overhawk.

    Holding back the zombie horde

Since he was last seen, Little Sky had been recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. to head another peacekeeping agency, A.R.M.O.R. The mandate of this agency was to protect the Earth from threats from alternate realities, which was something he was uniquely familiar with. When the Nexus of All Realities came into sync with a wave universe infested with zombies, Little Sky led A.R.M.O.R.'s containment of the situation. He recruited Machine Man and Jocasta to retrieve a blood sample from the alternate Earth so that Morbius could create a vaccine against the zombie plague. He took the two synthetic beings there himself, pointing out that he wasn't only the director but also the designated driver.

Unfortunately, the Morbius he was working with had been replaced by a zombie counterpart and caused an outbreak within A.R.M.O.R. central command, the Hollow. Little Sky fought along with Jocasta and Machine Man to contain the outbreak, but at least one zombie managed to escape via the teleportation bay. He tasked Morbius to assemble the Midnight Sons and track the remaining infected down.

When Lyra arrived on Earth-616 from her native alternate future, Little Sky and A.R.M.O.R. were on the job. Not only did he have to contend with the daughter of Thundra and the Hulk, but he also had the ever present problem of Norman Osborn and H.A.M.M.E.R. watching for him to make the slightest mistake. Since Osborn had come to power, Little Sky had to keep vigilant to stop Osborn from having A.R.M.O.R. go the way of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Little Sky had a contingency plan to deal with someone like Lyra, and that contingency's name was She-Hulk. Unfortunately, it was the Dark Avengers who ended up apprehending Lyra, and she was held in Avengers Tower instead of the Hollow as Little Sky would have wanted.

Later, Little Sky is manipulated by Mystique in a far-ranging attempt to infiltrate the Nexus of Realities.

    Powers and Abilities

As Little Sky's alias suggests, he has the mutant ability to open dimensional portals. This portals can allow him to instantaneously travel great distances within a dimension, take him to other dimensions such as the Dark Dimension or even to alternate realities.
