Guess what? James Robinson returns! There is talk about the latest issue of EARTH 2 along with discussion on some other comics this week and James even answers some of your questions.
Well there's Wanda Mann from Sandman as a transgender character. You also have Mystique and Shatterstar as regular appearring bisexual characters. Mystique even had her own series.
In Morrison's Batman run the Jason Todd story showed that maybe he was not happy with his life and can be viewed as foreshadowing that he becomes Wingman and that he could be saved putting it together it is a clear story. If anything they were keeping Batman continuity because Snyder and Morrison still had stories to tell so the editors should have based on their upcoming stories and been more careful of Red Hood and the Outlaws. I can understand what James Robinson said that in the end it will just be a great story that you can revisit. The book started after one reboot and is ending in another if anything it is shown that continuity is worthless but a good story can endure.
I gave up on Morrison's Action Comics. I have the last 3 issues sitting in a short box and I have no desire to read them because it feels like a chore. I don't want to wait 16 or 17 issues just to go back and read them over again so the story makes sense. Sorry not a fan....
@G-Man: ........oh great, now Sara is going to hate me like all the fanboy/pigs on here who rail about Ms. Marvel *ahem* Captain Marvel, it gave me chills hearing Sara put the smack-down on those peeps.....i would NEVER make light of her lack of height, i would however make fun, if her hair was in a bun, and like The Flash away i would run!
I think this was my fave podcast so far, awesome stuff. I'm sooooo on the Twin Peaks comic bandwagon, thats such a good idea that it will never happen, perfect title: Black Lodge.
G-Man Starling from Birds of Prey is bisexual and Gail Simone has stated that she's working on a transgender character for an upcoming Batgirl issue. FYI.
Sara's rant about Captain Marvel was on point. Prior to her being revamped as Captain Marvel, I didn't even give Carol Danvers a chance because the name "Ms. Marvel" reminded me of a 50's housewife and her outfit was ridiculous. As a woman, I am enjoying having her be portrayed in a way that is more accessible to me. That's why I will never read books like Red Hood and the Outlaws because of the portrayal of Starfire. Clearly, that book isn't being marketed to me anyway.
@BCreatures16: I can see where she's coming from but I don't agree that Ms. Marvel is a sexist name, if that's true why isn't Mr Terrific or Mr Fantastic sexist?
I actually think that Batman Inc. is in continuity, mostly because most of Batman's continuity is still there. Even in one of the more recent issues of Batman, Bruce says how he's connected to Batman Inc.
The only books I don't mind double shipping is Thor:God of Thunder and Avengers because those books are off the hook!Everything else. Marvel needs to slow the hell down!
I had to write to simply say YOU ALL RAWK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! From the truthfulness and sometimes edgy content that your podcasts bring every week (almost anyway..XP) you raise this genre to a completely different level! Sara you shouldn't apologize for your comments they were well over due! I instead applaud you on your steadfast commitment to the evolution of a very neanderthal way of thinking. Best podcast yet, please, PLEASE don't stop making relevance to what many consider irrelevant!! Salud!!
@Jonny_Anonymous: I personally wasn't saying it was sexist, more like my initial reaction was to roll my eyes because it seemed corny and portrayed her character as being unsubstantial. The typical argument is that when a female superhero's name is associated with her gender that it is deemed that she is lesser than her male counterparts. I'm not saying I agree with it but there you go.
I never really know how free-speaking or reserved and conservative (Not in a bad way) Tony and Sara will be.
Whenever someone like James comes on and says the word "Blowjobs", I dive under my blanket to hide from the thick air of awkwardness that permeates the air. I'd not feel that way on any other podcast. It's kinda hilarious.
Does his bluntness sometimes make you guys uncomfortable or is that just part of the banter?
I actually think you're all brilliant. I DID feel Sara was going to Sweeney Todd James when he started speaking about intimate shaving.
@Babs I completely agree with everything you said about Carol as Captain Marvel. But I think I read a complaint some place that in her military career she is actually a Sargent and is higher ranked than a Captain. So calling her a Captain is a demotion in rank, because Steve Rogers was promoted to Captain America when he got his powers. But I can't say for sure that is their reasoning since its not my thoughts on the subject. I agree she should be Captain Marvel, and not until you said why could I put into words what Marvel had done for the character. There is also the argument that calling her Captain Marvel takes away from Mar-Vell, but again I don't understand that either.
What if DC sort of approached Wonder Woman with a similar idea as Marvel did with Miss Marvel. No name change, because the name Wonder Woman is Iconic, but maybe alter her bathing suit costume to look more like Amazon armor with a Roman armored skirt, and weapons. And define her character like you guys were saying, like they are sort of doing now I guess. Would taking the gender out of the equation, like Sara said, work for Wonder Woman too? I mean her gender is a big part of her origin, and in her name, but would how Marvel redid Carol Danvers work for Diana?
According to this documentary I saw about Comic History, Wonder Woman (and comics) became sort of anemic girl books because of the Wortham Trials, where comics were blamed for society's ills. And Wonder Woman was said to be too manly and teaching girls the wrong ideals, so she became more feminine and more love sick about Steve Trevor just as Lois Lane went from being this strong independent reporter to being love sick over Superman. I think the changes came to Batman and Superman from those trials too. Batman and Robin became campy, and became more law abiding (even became honorary cops) and worked more with female characters because they were said to be to gay, and Superman was said to be the dream of a man being able to do whatever he wanted without any consequence, or something. So Superman began working with the law more and might have led to him being more law abiding that Batman.
Happy Birthday, Comic Vine! It's always great to hear James on the podcast. He's also right about no Sherlock in Dickens era, and corsets can be nice.
SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN sounds more like a story arc. Retitling the entire series seems utterly pointless. I don't see them having a non-Peter Parker Spider-man for over a year. They're just going to have to re-title it.
As interesting as it sounds to have an attractive Cuban woman shave me. I couldn't trust any stranger to put a straight razor that close to my throat. I personally use a replaceable head razor.
The reason Hulk's pants stay on is probbaly the same technology that keeps women's breasts in their costumes while not wearing a bra.
I don't quite get while Emma is so mad at Scott for his actions while they were possessed. Doesn't she regret any of her actions while hosting the Phoenix Force? None of them were in complete control of themselves.
The hatred toward the name change for Carol Danvers just confuses me. However, I didn't like Dick Grayson as Batman. He was just the best of a lot of bad options. I would never give you hate about expressing your thoughts on something you're passionate about, Sara. You have a valid argument, and you shouldn't feel the need to hold back when you're completely justified.

That argument would sound more valid than what I normally see, but Captain is above a Sergeant. The Air Force basically goes airmen, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, major, lieutenant colonel. colonel, general, and so on. I also left out all the class of ranks such as airmen first class, master segreant etc. Still, this group of people are complaining about her being called "Captain" over "Ms.". They aren't demanding her be titled "Sergeant Marvel". "Ms." has no rank and thus sounds as if she has no authority.
@ComicAddict2814: Action is about the first years of Superman and still is. If you don't get it, its not the lack of history that's your problem. But hey, do w.e u want.
@Alch21: I heard they were bringing Action Comics to "present day" by the end of Morrison's run. Honestly, I'm enjoying Grant's work on Batman Inc, I just feel like his run on Action has been confusing. From what I've read, i'm not alone, but maybe I am. I guess Morrison is over my head on this one. Oh well.....
I love Hank Pym too, well like a great deal. He is a great psychological character. He loves everyone, but also secretly resents everyone, even his wife, even himself. He feels powerless and worthless, he thought he was the brains of the Avengers until he discovered that Tony Stark was Iron Man. So he wasn't even the brains anymore, and he wasn't the strongest, or the best fighter. Every time he switches his superhero identity, from Ant Man to Giant Man to Yellow Jacket to Goliath to Wasp to Dr. Pym and whatever, its a sign of his great mental problems and a possible large spell coming on. He has break downs, he is like the character Nash from a Beautiful Mind but as a Superhero. He is like the Watchmen before the Watchmen (maybe). A hero who isn't stable. When he invents Ultron and uses his own mind its like he creates his evil side. Its he made his evil (SECRET) thoughts real and alive, every time they face Ultron its not only his greatest failure but a reminder of his dark thoughts and embarrassing stuff most people wish would just go away. Pym is also like Ulton's father, who passed down his hatred to his son. But where Pym failed with Ultron, his son, he succeeded with his grandson, Vision. Vision rejected his father (Ultron)"s hatred and sided with his grandfather. So with Pym you get the Dr. Jekyll and Mister Hyde thing, the psychological stuff, the father and son and grandson story, and all that.
Great to see how natural Sara is about her feelings, i love Captain Marvel comics, and i like the changing on her costume and name cause that gave her alot more respect. Good James is back.
