Very entertaining!!
Let's admit it. I'm a bit of a nerd. I like Greek mythology. I used to look up Greek mythology in high school for fun. For fun. It's sad I know, but I liked the premise of the movie (with the Greek gods alive and their offspring still among us). I haven't read any of the Percy Jackson books, though after this movie I think I might. Let's get on with the review:
The Good:
- Casting: Logan Lerman did a great job as the title character. He's charismatic and pretty funny. Brandon T. Jackson as Grover also was pretty comedic. Of course the adults were great as well. Catherine Keener, Pierce Brosnan, Sean Bean, Rosario Dawson, Steve Coogan, etc. There were a few unfortunate few, but I'll get to them.
- Greek myth: As previously mentioned, I like mythology (Greek especially), so any chance to have that highlighted is always fine by me.
- Story: Good enough. Granted, there's some huge concerns, but overall, it was nicely paced and fun.
- Special effects: Pretty good. I like the look of the Underworld, especially.
The Bad:
- Dead weight: I wasn't a big fan of Alexandra Daddario who played Annabeth. She felt a little too wooden and unlikable. And then there's Uma Thurman. I've never been a big fan as I always feel like she overacts. This movie doesn't change my view of that. This movie would've been better without them
- Plot holes: I kept thinking. Don't they need one more pearl? Of course, if they had another, it would've been a longer movie and less dramatic. Oh well.
The Verdict:
- Well, I wasn't expecting a blockbuster like Harry Potter, but I was still pleasantly surprised by the movie. It's not award-winning, but it's a fun and entertaining movie. Not necessarily sure if it's worth a movie ticket price, but definitely worth the 118 minutes it takes to watch it. I wouldn't even mind if they continued to make the sequels. I like the characters enough to see where this goes. A good movie, overall.
