Portia was from the planet Aquaterra where she was an intergalatic space hunter who traveled in her Interplantary Ark collecting animal species on other worlds. While exploring an uncharted planet she was severely injuried by a trap set for humans by an Intelligent Canine species. Portia lost her left eye and left leg in the incident in which she had to amputate herself. Some of the Intelligent Canines had pity on Portia while others did not. This climatically resulted in Portia and the Intelligent Canines loyal to her being exiled in Portia's Interplanetary Ark which she renamed the Cosmic Hound in honor of her loyal companions. During her time in exile Portia took the pirate motiff and the name "Peg-Leg" because she wore a patch over her left eye and she had a wooden leg. Superman finds out that Portia was kept alive and controlled by the Intelligent Canines so she can control the Ark because the dog's paws cannot. Superman returns Portia to her homeworld only to find out that it is desolate and that Portia aged immediately. Portia mentions that she is 347 years old and had a contagious disease and the Intelligent Canines wouldn't allow her to die. The original Intelligent Canines died, multiplied and grew more intelligent as time went on but they always knew that they must keep Portia alive by regenerating her cells. The Intelligent Canines realized after battling Superman that they had telekinetic powers allowng them to control the Interplanetary Ark. The Interplanetary Canines followed Superman and Portia to Aquaterra in an attempt to fulfill Portia's wish in dying. Superman's code of life wouldn't allow a person to die. He had a flashback experience in which his foster father Jonathan Kent said to him about he is only a man and not the Almighty God. You can choose life and death but life may not always be the correct choice. The ultimate decision is not yours to make. Portia desire for death has finally been answered. Superman leaves Aquaterra for home and the Intelligent Canines howl at the buried body of Portia.
