    Fearing his confrontation with the previous Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, known as Salomé, Doctor Strange created the mystical beings Vincent Stevens and Paradox to act in his place while he built up his powers.

    Calling himself Strange, Paradox was at first confused and sought the Infinity Gems, believing he required them to survive. He was easily able to take four of the gems from the Infinity Watch. But Adam Warlock with his soul gem showed Strange the truth of his existence. Knowing that the gems would not work in unison, Strange returned the gems and retreated.
