The first 48 hours of the Overground Collective on deviantART Overground Comics was founded by Jon Hughes and Michael Bornstein in January of 2013. Although recently founded, the imprint has been in development independently for over a decade. Overground Comics first became publicly recognized in 2009 as a collaborative project on the artist network deviantART. Founder Jon Hughes made a plea to anyone who was looking to collaborate on a comic book related project and who believed that doing so would help them improve their skills together, and be the end of the first week of it's inception, more than 50 artists from across the globe were involved, including Hughes, and current industry professionals Joshua Flower and Kate Finnegan. The project lasted for roughly a year before time constraints caused it's end.
Overground Comics itself did not fold though. Jon Hughes and Joshua Flower continued to work on the company's core titles, Absent Captain and Plus Ultra, in their spare time, and in the fall of 2012 caught the eye of investor Michael Bornstein. Bornstien formed a small invesment group that was able to provide the resources for a full company launch as of January, 2013.
Overground Comics released their first three titles, Absent Captain, Graduate, and Overground Comics Presents at the Space City Con in Houston, Tx, where the company operates, on August 2nd, 2013.
