    Review: Onslaught Unleashed #1

The monstrosity known as Onslaught has returned, and it'll take the combined efforts of the Secret Avengers and the Young Allies to vanquish him once again.

    The Good

Andrade's art has got fantastic style. I'm sure some readers will find it too unconventional for a story like this, but I was seriously digging its graffiti-like flourish. Though I'm not sure how appropriate Onslaught's return is (more on that below,) McKeever's definitely got a good handle on how these characters relate to these metaphysical circumstances that've grown so complex over the years.

    The Bad

Some lines get a bit forced, like Steve spelling exactly what's spreading Rikki so thin and Beast somehow figuring out immediately that the conduit was at the exact point of a rip. Beast dropping exposition about Rikki seemed especially unnecessary considering the back-up we get that details the history of Onslaught. It also doesn't really seem that fitting for such a grand foe like Onslaught to return through machinations of a drug cartel or even an evil corporation.

    The Verdict - 3/5

I was around for the first Onslaught x-over and I've always been a bit ambivalent about whether the monster should become a recurring villain. It's a question of whether subsequent appearances would diminish his threat. However, even though this got off to an oddly low-key start, I'm intrigued to see how this reinterpretation of the villain as boogeyman for super-people develops.

Maybe this would be better if the villain was not such a big character as Onslaught. I think it's the same as Doomsday returning in the DCU. These were characters that made a HUGE impact and they are sort of downplayed in mini-series or smaller titles.

I LOVED the first Onslaught story...it was my first big crossover and it will always have a special place in my heart

    Onslaught Returns? not so much

as for this arc...so far it seems alright...but I just think that if Onslaught is going to be used then he should be used as an X-men villain...he's the combination of Xavier's negative feelings and Magneto's evil...he's like the perfect X-men villain....the only personal ties he has to anyone in the Young Allies or Secret Avengers is to Beast, Nomad, and Captain America and the personal ties to Nomad and Captain America are superficial at best...but if he were used as an X-men villain then there would be a personal stake for nearly everyone involved

I would have put the art in "The Bad" section, I'm not liking that style at all.

I'm trying to think of some redeeming features of this comic. I'm glad it was in colour. Writing was like a kindergarten collage of sayings taped to the pages, images weren't much better. Was the art style supposed to be a simplified version of Aeon Flux? Lots of convenient plot devices, hardly any character, slow reactions, no real decision making, surprisingly dull for the amount of stuff crammed onto a page. I have the next three in the set, but think I'll pass the series along instead....

So this is the first time I read a comics about  Onslaught, never heard of him before, pretty exciting, eh?   The Good I have to say that I just LOVED the drawings and the coloring, kind of graffiti - amazing. I can finally get attached to a comics, don't know whay, but I really like it that way, it's makes the plot more living, more interesing and thrilling. Also great that everything is understandable here. It's the first issue and there are a lot of new characters to expose the reader in some...
