    Pre-Crisis:

Grant Haskill was an athlete and an award winning researcher working in the laboratory at the Shady Point Nuclear Generating Station. He was working with a Nuclear Radiation Generator-Experimental (N.R.G.-X) suit. He wore an exo-skeleton suit and was controlling the N.R.G.-X suit on the other side of a glass-lead enclosure. While performing his duties an explosion occurred in the laboratory he was workng in. His girlfriend Laurel Kenyon was on hand when the bomb went off. The explosion caused the essence of Grant to enter the N.R.G.-X suit. Superman was on hand to help recover any casualities and encountered N.R.G.-X. As N.R.G.-X, Grant was unable to communicate with anyone. And, when he tried he ended up attacking Superman with energy beams which ended up enraging the Man of Steel. As their initial encounter continued N.R.G.-X once again hit Superman with an energy beam which turned the Man of Steel "literally into a Man of Steel." Superman was able to break out of the steel casing and resume his search for N.R.G.-X. The body of Grant Haskill was taken to the Metropolis General Hospital. Grant's vital signs were in excellent condtion, however he had no signs of brain activity which categorized him as clinically dead. N.R.G.-X made its way into Metropolis and took revenge on Committee for the Unconditional Regulation of Energy (C.U.R.E.) which was responsible for the bombing at the research laboratory Grant Haskill was working in. N.R.G.-X destroyed C.U.R.E.'s headquarters but Superman was on hand to stop N.R.G.-X and quickly rebuilt the destroyed headquarters. N.R.G.-X next went after Ray Ryker the friend of Grant Haskill. Ray admitted to planting the bomb and was saved by Superman. N.R.G.-X began to shoot Carbon Damping Rods at Superman. The Carbon Damping Rods are needed to "control the nuclear power core" without them the suit will become a nuclear bomb. The climatic battle ended with Superman flying the N.R.G.-X suit into space where it destroyed itself. At the Metropolis General Hospital, Laurel Kenyon wouldn't give up hope for Grant Haskill who was in bed with his eyes wide open and in a comatosed state. The final panel shows a strange glow around Grant Haskill's eyes.

    Post-Crisis:

Miguel Diaz and Ray Ryker were two physicists working an a nuclear experiment when an explosion occurred. The explosion transferred Diaz's essence into the mechanical being, known as the Nuclear Radiation Generator Experimental. The confused state of Diaz being in the suit compelled it to attack Ryker. Superman arrives and is placed in a steel shell, while the suit continues its pursuit of Ryker. Superman breaks free from his encased state, with the N.R.G.-X suit self destructs and a comatose Diaz is laying on the floor.

A new N.R.G.-X attacks Superman and Batman.
