The Circus Is In Town
Dick Grayson returns as Nightwing. He visits Haly's Circus which was in town. Later he is attacked by a new villain named Saiko.
My Thoughts:Initially I hadn't planned on picking up Nightwing when DC announced it as one if their new 52 series. I didn't much like the color change of his costume, preferring the blue over the red. When I rethought everything through, I told myself I was crazy to pass on this series. After all, Dick Grayson is one of my favorite characters. I liked him as Nightwing so why shouldn't I like this?
Kyle Higgins is quickly becoming a favorite writer of mine. I've only recently had the opportunity to read some of his work. I like what he did on Deathstroke #1 and he managed to impress me yet again on this issue. He definitely has a broad understanding of the characters he writes which is a must for any writer. The way he begins the issue was great. Readers of Dick Grayon as Batman will appreciate how Higgins mentioned recents events Grayson endured. I also like how he brought Haly's Circus into the picture. It seemed very fitting to begin this new series by taking Dick Grayson back to where it all started.
There are so many reasons to love Dick Grayson. Among them is his passion to stop crime. As can be seen in the early pages of the issue, he stops a psychotic killer who stabbed a couple of citizens. What made it more impressive was the way he did it in such poetic fashion. Seeing his acrobatic skills come in to play was a sight to see. What I also liked (and I hope people noticed) was after he defeated this killer who fell to the ground, the blood spattered on his chest was in the shape of a bat. It also resembled the design on Nightwing's chest. I'm sure that was no accident.
I like this villain named Saiko. While I know nothing about him, his appearance was pretty cool even though some will view him as a Wolverine knock-off. I will admit the blades bare a striking resemblance to that of Wolverine's and are probably not necessary. He could have been just as cool of a villain without them. Either way I look forward to finding out more about his character and why he thinks Dick Grayson is a killer. Like a lot of people have noticed, this could eventually be tied into the events that took place in Batman #1. I wouldn't mind seeing them crossover at all. Snyder and Higgins are doing great things and we've only just seen the beginning.
Eddy Barrows did a terrific job on the artwork. Together with JP Mayer (inker) and Rob Weis (colorist) they did a great job capturing the mood of the script and Gotham City, as well displaying the acrobatic skills of Nightwing. I just loved seeing the panels of Nightwing as he maneuvers throughout the city. They're so breathtaking.
This was a great beginning to this series which I definitely look forward to following each month. The only thing that lowered my score was the ending. It seemed a little sudden. I felt like there should have been another page or two before it ended with something revealed that would have got our blood pumping a little more. Either way it was a solid issue well worth the money.
