    Cyclops and Wolverine rescue a mutant (Ugly John) from a Sentinel. Ms. Nova shows Donald Trask how homo sapiens slaughtered the neandertals thirty thousand years ago and then tells him that mutants will do the same to humans within a few generations. Xavier is trying out the new cerebra when a large spike of the mutant genes is spotted in South America. He asks Cyclops and Wolverine to investigate. Xavier hears a voice inside his head that tries to take control of him, but is saved by Jean. Ms. Nova takes Mr. Trask to a Master Mold facility in South America and introduces him to Wild Sentinels.

    The amazing detailed, idiosyncratic artwork of Frank Quitely. That's all you need to know really, isn't it? But there are things going on here that really help this cover stand out from the crowd. Group shots are ten a penny, we've said it before. Morrison, though, was doing something new and brave with one of the oldest teams on the block. First he dispensed with costumes and replaced them with uniforms - the big yellow 'x's are what really stand out here. He bared down the team to its bare ess...

    Love him or loath him forever, Grant Morrison will always be GRANT MORRISON! If anyone wants to begin to write a love/hate letter to this Scottish extraordinaire, refer some of his earlier opuses-Batman: Arkham Asylum, The Invisibles, Doom Patrol, and most importantly-New X-Men! The former X-Men title suffered terribly in both sales and fan-reception due partly on the mismanaged editorial decisions in the late 90s. New blood, new life, new direction.
