meteorite's New Warriors Classic #1 - Volume 1 review

A very good series to reprint

The New Warriors was a popular team back in the nineties, (and if you ask me, the original volume is the only one so far that actually looks like it had decent characters and plots), and so that was what led me to buying this TPB, as well as the fact that the team was made up pretty much entirely of teenagers.

I can happily say that the team doesn't disappoint. Each member of the New Warriors is well-fleshed out, and being a new character, Night Thrasher has enough of his character and origin explained without clogging up the issues too much. We also get an insight into the team's personal lives, and the contrasts can easily be seen between the characters' personalities. The powers are pretty diverse, and the very way the team is formed and how they operate is a realistic and creative take on the super-hero team format.

However, obviously it can't all be perfect, as otherwise I would have given this TPB five stars. The TPB starts off with New Warriors #1 (the issue where the team is formed), and then has the Thor issues in between #1 and #2, which is when the team first appeared. I can see continuity-wise why this choice was made, but in terms of the order in which the issues originally came out, it does make for some slight confusion.

Whilst I like the characters (whether they be good, bad, or simply supporting characters), the actual stories for this don't always thrill me. I can make an exception for the Thor issues being more about Thor than the Warriors, but issues #3 and #5-#6 felt somewhat boring to me. Issue #3 is just about the Mad Thinker getting information about all of the Warriors (the notes at the back of the issue said it was supposed to take a look at each member and their motives and such, but I didn't feel like it did so very well), whilst issues #5-#6 are a two-part story arc involving an anti-hero named Star Thief and the Warriors alternating between fighting and helping him. Star Thief wasn't that great a character, and it feels like he was in the spotlight too much during this arc.

Despite these flaws though, the team is still a pretty good one, especially if you're a teenager and can relate to at least one of the characters (like me). As I said above, the characters and team are varied enough that all of them feel like individuals, which is always an important factor to be included in a team. If you like the characters enough, you can forgive some of the less brilliant issues, but if you care more about a decent plot than character development, you probably wouldn't like this.
