Lonar patrols the Eskimo village of his charge, Nomak, ever vigilant for some sign of Darkseid. On approach to the village, is Lucifar, a child of Apokolips. Radiating intense heat, covered in a cloud of steam, Lucifar begs for assistance, then collapses. Out of compassion, Nomak and his wife take the boy into their igloo. Lonar, though, is unsettled by this event, and ponders the proper course of action. Orion, in his guise as Anthony J. Masters, continues his protective watch over Brigadier General Maxwell Torch. In San Francisco, Lightray walks the streets with his charge, Richard Roe, and Roe's girlfriend, Debbi Drake. The surly Roe is suspicious of Lightray's presence, a suspicion likely fueled by jealousy. Roe storms off away from them, running afoul of pair of drug dealers, who begin beating him. Lightray changes into his costume, and takes the two dealers out. Lightray checks Roe for injuries. Roe tells Lightray that he once sold drugs for his two attackers, who beat him over owed money. Lightray, morally disgusted by Roe, begins to bristle at the idea of continuing to protect him from Darkseid. Receiving a summons on his Mother Box, Lightray journeys to Alaska, to meet with Lonar. Once Lonar has explained the situation with Lucifar, Lightray proposes that they seek the counsel of Izaya, on New Genesis. Opening up a Boom Tube, Lightray ushers Lonar, Lucifar, Nomak and his wife to New Genesis.

The Eskimos are terrified by the majesty of New Genesis. An enraged Izaya appears, and scolds Lightray and Lonar for their thoughtless act of bringing humans to New Genesis. Izaya speaks with Lucifar, and learns that the boy was sent in exchange for Esak, the young God abducted by Darkseid's agent. The exchange mirrors an earlier pact between New Genesis and Apokolips, when Izaya and Darkseid exchanged their first born sons, Orion and Scott Free, to forge an uneasy peace between their two worlds. Suddenly, the skies over New Genesis fill with hordes of Parademons. The war has come to New Genesis. Izaya calls Orion, Metron, Jezebelle Of The Fiery Eyes, and Forager back from Earth, to defend New Genesis, transporting them all, in an instant, via Boom Tubes. In the heat of battle, the Eskimos are forgotten, by all but Darkseid, who arrives to wrench the Anti-Life Equation from Nomak's mind. Lonar suddenly realizes the danger the Eskimos are in, and seeks them out. He arrives too late to stop Darkseid from draining all knowledge from within Nomak's mind. Lonar lunges at Darkseid, and is cut down by Darkseid's Omega Effect. Pooling all their energy into Lightray's Mother Box, the New Gods repel the invading Parademons with an epic release of their combined Godly powers. Theirs is a pyrrhic victory, however, as the battle has claimed Lonar's life. Furious, Orion threatens to kill Lucifar for bringing this curse upon them. Izaya stays Orion's hand, citing that the time for vengeance is not yet upon them.
