    New Britain is the largest island in the Bismarck Archipelago of Papua New Guinea. The island was the centre of one of the first conflicts of the Great War that resulted in the forming of German New Guinea. In World War II the Japanese Imperial army spent much of the early 1940s occupying New Britain, following their bombardment of Rabaul in 1942.
