    Two Stories in One

The two stories from last issue continue as we see the formation of the Avengers in 1959 along with the current battle of the New Avengers (plus, what will be the fate of the wounded member?).

    The Good

I was against the idea that the Avengers actually first formed in 1959 rather than in Avengers #1. I have to admit that this group gathered has promise and (depending on if they can complete their mission) deserve their own mini series. The fact that most of them don't get along and are all deadly in their own light would guarantee loads of fun shenanigans.

The battle in current day is handled nicely as we see the team in different locations, unaware that one of their member is down. I loved that we see they're not always in constant contact and take it for granted that they are not all indestructible. Deodato does some amazing things when showing the characters in different fighting positions. There was one page towards the end where we see the aftermath of their fight and you see a bunch of guys webbed up all over the place. It gives a sense of how the battle played out overall rather than just from what we saw in the individual panels.

    The Bad

Mike Deodato and Howard Chaykin have such different styles. I'm loving the two stories but the different styles in one issue is jarring. The stories don't have a connection we can see so far and switching back and forth was almost too much. I'm not the biggest Chaykin fan but I can appreciate his style for certain stories. It just didn't feel right with the story or characters involved.

    The Verdict

I was concerned about the Avengers formed in 1959 but seeing how much these guys hate each other makes me want to see more. We also see the continuation of the battle the New Avengers are in the middle of (in current time) where one of their members was gravely injured last issue. The two stories flip back and forth and at this point, there doesn't seem to be a connection between them. I would assume that Bendis will tie these together in the next issue or so. Mike Deodato has such a distinct style and does uses a nice variety of different perspective shots. When the story and art switches back and forth, it becomes distracting. But both stories have me glued. Bendis clearly is building up the suspense and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Still Not Interested In The '59 Avengers 0

New Avengers continues with its awkward story split between the New Avengers in the present day and Nick Fury back in the late fifties. It is no worse than last issue, but it is not much improved either.  In the present day, the New Avengers continue their raid on Superia's new operation, but now the action focuses on the the gunshot injury Mockingbird suffered in the previous issue. It makes for an exciting sequence, because you do not get to see team members getting hurt treated in such a real...

Hello, I’m an Avengers comic and I seem to have lost my plot. 0

Story Something is missing from this story. At first I thought I was the only one, but after reading other reactions online I felt better. The two stories are not very connected. At least, at this stage its not connected. Bendis has shown that he can do big things, epic stories that span years. However, I can’t see the lines that go from point A to point B here. Retcons are commonplace in the comic book world. Re-writing the Avengers history though, feels wrong. So the President had a program...
