Director Joe Carnahan's name has been linked to comics quite a bit over the last week or so. First we discovered that his plans for a Daredevil film at FOX Studios was squashed due to the character's rights reverting back to Marvel. The director was so disappointed over the fact that he wouldn't have a chance to make his "Man Without Fear" movie that he showed the sizzle reel he created and showed it off via his Youtube channel. Needless to say, the clip got a lot of attention -- mostly because of the direction Carnahan had for the film: a darker, edgier Daredevil set in gritty 1970's New York City.
While that project doesn't look like it will be happening, it seems Carnahan's name has been linked to yet another comic book property. Writer Mark Millar revealed in a post he recently made in his MillarWorld forums that Carnahan will be the man behind NEMESIS, Millar's ultimate anti-hero.
Millar's Nemesis character was created to be a cross between both the Batman and the Joker: he is the world's smartest man and world's most psychotic super-villain all rolled into one. The character was first created back in 2010 and received his own, self titled 4-issue series published by ICON, a division of Marvel as well as in CLiNT, Millar's magazine. According to the series' writer, Carnahan will act as both writer and director for the film.
Shot straight from a wedding in Manchester last week to the City of Angels and plunged straight into some studio biz on the Nemesis movie. Mighty Joe Carnahan is directing (from a script by he and his brother Matthew), but this much you already know. Fox wanted us to get in the same room for the first time and really hash this out, which was exciting. Joe has a really brilliant take on this and Matt and he are going to take things from here so I'm really happy. Absolutely no casting has been done formally although you can google the MTV interview from last January where he and Sir Liam Neeson are chatting about it. More news as it happens.
Perhaps that edgy, dark, gritty vision Carnahan had for Daredevil can be applied to Nemesis? Considering the type of character and the level of violence and darkness he exudes in his self-titled series, perhaps Carnahan's the right man for the job?
The thought of a film about a super-villain is kind of interesting though, isn't it? When he feature them as your central character, who do you get your audience to root for? Millar certainly did a good job making Nemesis a success in comics, but can he do the same on the big screen? Particularly when it isn't often that a film follows the story of the main antagonist. That should definitely be interesting.
What do you think of the news? Would you like to see Director Joe Carnahan make a Nemesis movie? What kind of a direction do you think a film like that should have?
