What do Namor's ankle wings do?
And how are they part of his mutation?
Character » Namor appears in 4967 issues.
Y'know what's funny, it was only this morning that I actually noticed Namor had wings on his ankles. :D I'm not always so terribly observant
Mighty Magneto says:
"Superkitty says:"Air out his feet so they don't smell so bad?"I think he might have this one"
If the surface-men would stop polluting the oceans he would have stinky feet, and then have to invade New York every time some Mer-man pointed it out.
Buckshot says:
"Superkitty says:"Air out his feet so they don't smell so bad?"That sounds right. "
Somehow I don't think that is what Kirby intended.
Hey, it works for Hermes, right?
I just think it's hilarious that they've created this arrogant, regal, tough badass fighter/king/leader, and he has fluffy little white wings on his ankles. Does anyone else think that's a Freudian manifestation?
Megaguirus says:
"The ankle wings allow namor to fly and assist him in swimming. "
See? Because they're super super super strong teeny wee wings ;)
Prodigious Man says:
"Hey, it works for Hermes, right? I just think it's hilarious that they've created this arrogant, regal, tough badass fighter/king/leader, and he has fluffy little white wings on his ankles. Does anyone else think that's a Freudian manifestation?"
Are you saying that Namor is gay?

I think it's desperately cute :D Teeny wings with super-strength. It's a wonder he doesn't fly around upside down.
Walkingstone says:

I get a mental picture of his arms folded and looking pissed...
"What? It's how I fly, wanna make something of it?"
Satyrquaze says:

No, not that, just that the creators wanted to make him such an a-hole towards nearly everybody, but he just does it to cover up his soft, touchy-feely inside. He is really a lover rather than a fighter, but he know the only language the surface people understand is his fist. He would actually rather hug than fight, but know he can't.

If he tried to give a surface dweller a hug, he would crush the poor sap.

Sorry, I should have added a sarcastic smiley there...
heh, Namor just need a good hug and then a cry.
Despite how dubious this is in relation to newtonian physics and fluid mechanics, it looks like the current Official explanation is that they are tied to his ability to fly. This is reinforced by record of Namor losing his ability to fly whenever his wings have been seriously damaged or (on some unusually occassions) temporarily amputated. I suppose they could be said to be either a manifestation of a supernatural ability to fly, or just really, REALLY strong.
Yeah the ankle wings are an homage to the olympian Hermes or Mercury in the roman.I allways liked the wings as adesign element they were signature and unique, but as far as explanation they were'nt really explored.
My interpretation is that they are like a pair of superhumanly strong hummingbird wings. They are the biological equivalent to a jet turbine. They are capable of the versatility found in hummmingbird wings and explosive enough to propel him like a jet.
Seeing as how a hummingbird's weight and size is predominantly in it's wings Namor's ankle wings may have to be the strongest muscles on his body.
I always thought he had the ability to fly but just needed the wings to help him control where he flies.
If that were the case they should explain how he flies.
Overall I think Namor needs an indepth study of his abilities. And I don't mean "oh..well.. he uh is atlantean and uh.. superstrong.. and uh.. um.. uh he's like a mutant..."
Naw, I want a cohesive explanation like we have with the Hulk. Because I think the mechanics of their power allow for limitation to be open ended. Hulk absorbs gamma and ,through anger, can ioncrease strenght exponentially.
I think King Namor who has exhibited varying levels of juice, a diversity of abilities, albeit rarely, and has hummingbird ankle wings deserves a thourough all power inclusive explanation.
Personally I think his powers should be as hybrid as he is. A mixture of mysticism and mutation that directly ties him to the ocean as an entity. He could be considered an avatar of the ocean.

The ankle wings resemble exactly the wings that the greek god Hermes (the roman god Mercury) had, except his were attached to his shoes (called talaria) granting him flight and speed like that of any winged bird, also used as a track & and field symbol. I think namors winged feet were a classical recogntion of flight and speed, and maybe even athleticism. (Namor originally had reg. wings not finned wings on his ankles, I think the fin addition was a better way for marvel to easily explain them.)
Also it can be noted that the Winged Helmet the original Flash wore, called a petasos, was based off the helmet worn by Hermes/Mercury (Also signifies speed).

Megaguirus says:
"The wings are just as well muscled as the rest of him. Plus there are four of them."
Please drag my mind out of places it doesn't belong.
And it wasn't just that quote either evil grin

lol, you and you're dirty little mind
Well, yeah but it's Friday and I like Namor so why not? I ought to look it up in this book I saw at the store: The Physics of Superheroes

hey i'm not judging, esp. when it comes to dirty minds, but mine is geared to the female of the species, and yes you should look it up, but first you have to buy it.
Hagane Enna says:
"Namor would rock in a movie."Maybe if they gave him his panets and not the speedo.
Nobody says:
"Hagane Enna says:"Namor would rock in a movie."Maybe if they gave him his panets and not the speedo."
That black outfit would definitely do if you ask me.
"Mercury the messenger god has them to, so maybe he is the Atlantis God of Flight or something. What do Namor's ankle wings do?
And how are they part of his mutation?
"
"And the Prodigal Son returnsHey, it works for Hermes, right?
I just think it's hilarious that they've created this arrogant, regal, tough badass fighter/king/leader, and he has fluffy little white wings on his ankles. Does anyone else think that's a Freudian manifestation?
