Later Alligator
I have really been looking forward to this book each week it comes out. Ms. Marvel has a lot of good qualities going for it, but what I think pushes it over the edge is just the sheer fun this book has. It really reminds me of those first Spider-Man comics, back when Peter Parker was in high school, dealing with real issues, but also just having fun being Spider-Man. Ms. Marvel uses that same spirit to create a new character in Kamala Khan, a Muslim girl living in New Jersey. I know what some of you may be thinking: that this book will be very preachy about tolerance and boy bands, but it's really not. No one, not the writer, the artist, or the other characters make a big deal out of who Kamala is. The one thing we do get forced is her first Marvel style team up with Wolverine, and as you can tell by the cover, he's totally excited! They grow up so fast.
That's right, I remember now! We last left our hero's facing off against a gigantic mutant Alligator... Thanks pictures! Kamala is still new to her powers and it's fun to see Wolverine talk her through her first big villain encounter. This series has been very heartfelt and character driven, but this issue is a flat out action scene from start to finish, which is a good change of pace for the book. If you just pick up this issue, you may not care about the character involved, but if you check out the first six issues, Kamala is developed very well. The art also matches the tone, is very colorful, and also borrows from the anime style to give it a unique touch.
The only thing that does not fit in this art style is Wolverine. I love the team up, and the banter between the two is charming, but they should have made Wolverine fit into the style of this book more, instead of drawing him more classic. He just sticks out, and being all yellow doesn't help the cause at all. I am sure this series will continue to be great, and it will be very cool to have a character readers can grow up with, like I did with Peter Parker. We also get to see a broader story start to form as Kamala's origin is discovered by the rest of the Inhumans,so this high school girl from Jersey is about to be thrown into a whole new world... with no one to tell us no ... or were to go .. or say we're only dreaming.
No, that's not the song from Aladdin .... shut up!
