The seal to the machine was broken during the artillery fire and countless mutants flood the battlefield. Only Hunter and Bauhaus Liutenant Maximillian von Steiner manage to reach the escape ship.

Mitch informs his Captain's family that he is MIA. While Mitch drinks in the bar, he is approached by Brother Samuel who offers him a deal to destroy the machine in exchange of evacuation passes. Mitch gives the passes to his captain's family and joins the Brother Samuel's ragtag group. While on the transport flying to the machine, a mutant controlled airship shots them down and the group is forced to use the escape pod. Which also meant that now they need to make a trek on foot to the machine through a city. While in the city, Hunter noticed some soldiers trying to make a profit from refugees, and took a detour to sort them out. In the old city ruins they used buried skyscraper to descend into the tunnels. While going through the tunnels, Hunter notices his Captain being dragged by the mutants and once again takes a detour to save him. The Captain while still alive, it too hurt to move, and orders Hunter to continue his mission. By the time Hunter catches up with the team the battle is over and only the Chronicles' guardian Severian is left. They manage to save Duval and Steiner before they are thrown into the machine. Hunter and Steiner lower the women into the hole, but the mutants are overwhelming them and Hunter is left to hold the rope alone. Hunter is not strong enough to hold the rope and falls into the machine, and is partially mutated. He manages to release himself and reach the center of the machine as Duval and Severian do. They activate what they think is a bomb, but it turned out to be engine of the spaceship, which then blasted from Earth. Hunter managed to escape the ship before it took off.
