Having had to rebuild the Metal Men 29 times, Doctor William Magnus decides to build a second team of Metal Men to serve as replacements for the first. Once completed Magnus gives the new Metal Men over to the old team for training. Gold's replacement is Silver. Iron's is Cobalt. Tin's is Zinc. Lead's is Osmium. Mercury's is Gallium. Platinum's is Iridium. Meanwhile, the disembodied intelligence of Darzz, the Dictator arrives on Earth. The new Metal Men's training is going well, save for Iridium's. Seeing Iridium as a rival for Magnus' affections, Platinum attacks her trainee. Magnus separates the two, harshly chastising Platinum for her actions. As usual, Platinum overreacts, and quits the Metal Men. Platinum encounters the prison bubble of Darzz, the Dictator. Darzz pours on the charm, convincing Platinum to release him from his "false" imprisonment.

Once released from the bubble, Darzz feeds his disembodied intelligence into a statue, animating it. Platinum is taken with the attention Darzz shows her, and decides to return to headquarters, to make Magnus jealous. Darzz moves from the statue into a sports car, then heads into the city. There, Darzz moves from the car into a skyscraper, animating it into a horrifying colossus. Alerted to the trouble, Magnus sees the crisis as the perfect opportunity to send the new Metal Men into the field. The team alloys themselves together, molding themselves into a catapult, from which to hurl the super dense Osmium, at the walking skyscraper. Osmium's impact causes the skyscraper to collapse. Magnus is so impressed with the new Metal Men's performance that he callously praises them over the old Metal Men's proven track record.

The original Metal Men abandon Magnus, in anger, deciding to make their own way in the world. Gold finds work as a Goldsmith, at a local jeweler. Iron takes on a job building bridges. Lead works in a nuclear research center. Tin and Nameless join an assembly line. Mercury uses his amazing abilities to clean out oil pipelines. Platinum finds Darzz in the rubble of the collapsed skyscraper. Darzz moves into a store mannequin, and charms his way into an invitation to visit Magnus' laboratory. There Darzz splits his consciousness a half dozen times, to commandeer the new Metal Men. Magnus and Platinum are locked away, but once alone, Platinum is easily able to effect their escape. Magnus and Platinum gather the original Metal Men back together, and return to the laboratory complex, for the showdown.

Gold destroys Silver by tackling him into a vat of concentrated nitric acid. Iron shatters the more brittle Cobalt. Lead maneuvers the heavier Osmium into crashing through the floor. Mercury leads Gallium into a frigid pipe, freezing his substitute solid. Osmium falls into Magnus' X-ray laboratory, where the strong bombardment of X-Ray's causes Osmium's head to explode. Mercury throws the section of pipe holding Gallium into Magnus' industrial smelter. Tin and Nameless crush Zinc between their harder bodies. Platinum trips Iridium into the industrial smelter. With Iridium's destruction, the disembodied intelligence of Darzz, the Dictator is completely dissipated. With the battle over, Magnus realizes there is only one, true Metal Men.
