The Mephisto saga, FF #276-277, is somewhat reminiscent of the Salem's Seven stories. However, this tale takes the horror of dark supernatural powers to a whole new level. Quite frankly, one has to wonder just how issue #277 ever got approved by the Comics Code Authority. First you have the issue of a small child, Franklin, being kidnapped by Mephisto in an attempt to exploit Franbklin's powers. Second, what happens to the Invisible Girl here is no less than physical and mental torture. Mephisto puts her in a large vise and begins to turn the handle, so that the device slowly but surely tightens it's grip on the blonde girl. Sue screams in torment. While Mephisto stops the torture for a while, things get even worse for Sue later in #277. Mephisto actually impales her on a razor sharp stone. Issue #277 is certainly not for the squeamish and brings to mind what things must have been like for victims of the infamous Inquisition of the Middle Ages. While the torment Sue has to endure in #277 is quite similiar to what Psycho-Man puts her through in #283, it would seem that Mephisto's torment rates even worse for the blonde heroine than Psycho-Man's, due to Mephisto's extensive use of physical pain. If not for the intervention of young Franklin Richards and his awesome psychic power, FF #277 might well have been the last issue for the Invisible Girl. Even if Sue could have survived Mepisto's torments, much more of the extreme torture could have made her an emotional wreck. Hence, it is because of her son, Franklin, that Sue Storm had the chance to become the Invisible Woman at the end of FF #283.
