When the all-new INVINCIBLE IRON MAN title was announced, there was a bit of information that was teased.

There will also be a new surprising supporting cast member who is a major Marvel character who hasn't been in Tony's life before.

Now Marvel has revealed who this major character is--Mary Jane Watson.

Beginning with INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #4, Mary Jane Watson is becoming part of the title's supporting cast.

“We were at one of our glorious Marvel publishing retreats and certain characters got brought up, sometimes almost accidentally, and I found out that nobody had anything going on with Mary Jane,” recalls Bendis. “I sat with that for a while and I always go to this place in my head where I [wonder] what the most interesting thing I would like to see that character do now and it fell right into the ideas I was already cooking for Tony Stark.”

It makes sense that they know each other. She did live at Avengers Tower when Peter was part of the team. But that was before things...changed in Brand New Day. So who knows how much they remember? This will definitely make things interesting.

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN begins in October written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by David Marquez. Mary Jane comes on board in December.

I like Bendis on solo books so this should be fine.

Knowing Bendis it's more likely that MJ and Pepper would become lovers. No matter what though it will probably sell. He has the ability to generate high sales from bad stories and character butchery.

I get the feeling Tony is about to lose millions on sexual harassment lawsuits, and I get the feeling he'd say it's worth it :)

I also don't get the backlash, seems like an interesting twist, and I really like MJ as a character (which is funny since I'm not really a Spider-Man fan).

Well Marvel is off to a great start with the relaunch, people are not even mad about the changes or random all around silly couples ( Looking at you Johnny and Medusa) its just a big meh or this looks dumb. As a comic book fan I'm tired of the big two looking down on me or going out of there way to say no your wrong to like or want something.

I swear to comicbook god this better be a red herring....

@dark_guyver: Because they're cool books about Superheroes that share a huge expanded universe and have decades of history. They're fun and interesting comics that appeal to people's inner child. I don't see how MJ getting a job with Stark Tech suddenly makes it awful.

I understand where @dark_guyver is coming from, though. The big 2 really try to shift the needle with characters when it's not necessary. What you said actually makes this worse too. One gets invested with the characters who have a rich history and personality so when they shift that character to a completely different direction just because, it makes it sting alot more for the fans in general.

But that's just my take on it :)

For the love of God, please tell me Stark is not still inverted from Axis. I mean, he's obviously going to try and bang Mary Jane either way (why the hell else is he hiring a supermodel to work at a tech firm), but at least a non-inverted Stark is less likely to videotape it and put it on PornHub.

I don't mind, so long as a writer gets the core of a character and who they are I'm fine with varying interpretations. I think limiting yourself to one and only one version/interpretation of a character is very anal and keeps a reader from allowing themselves to enjoy a new story.

That's just me though.
