This year's The Amazing Spider-Man showed that you could have a Spider-Man movie without Mary Jane. Last week word got out that actress Shailene Woodley was "in talks" to play Mary Jane in the sequel. While there hasn't been an official confirmation, The Hollywood Reporter has mentioned that Woodley has just booked the role.

What does this mean for Peter and Gwen?

Not too much. Apparently THR is also apparently aware of the direction of the sequel and third movie after.

But the Mary Jane role is proving to be only a very small part in Amazing Spider-Man 2 but blossoms into an integral lead for the planned third movie as the studio seeks to build to the classic "Death of Gwen Stacy" story.

We'll have to wait and see if this proves to be the case and what sort of impact Mary Jane will have in the movie and how she'll be introduced.

I know they're supposed be in high school and all, but this girl looks REALLY young. Andrew Garfield is 29, the guy playing Flash is 27, Emma Stone is 23. Shailene Woodley is 20, and she looks 12.

I heard about this a few weeks ago in an interview with Webb. They are also looking at Electro being in the movie.

Initial though before reading article: too soon. But if it's true that it will be only a minor role, to get her ready for when Gwen dies (very brave move for Marvel if they are heading in that direction, if slightly inevitable) than I think it would be great. (And a bit of a shock for everyone in the audience who isn't acquainted with comic books- as my friends were when I told them about GS's death)

Don't like her as Mary Jane.

If so, then somebody need to go ahead and photoshop Shailene Woodley with red hair!! We want to see it!!

As long as MJ isn't as annoying as she was in the Raimi triogy.

@xAnimosity: I think having Electro as a villain would be great! As much as I like Green Goblin and Doc Ock, let's explore some of these other villains.

@ChrisPartin: I am not saying I don't want to see them, I am saying they are not important enough to kill off gwen, arguably the second most important event in shaping parker after the death of uncle Ben.

Kraven would be great! Still crossing my fingers for a Rhino appearance one day.

Make it a cameo / background part.

Then give her a slightly bigger role in the third film where I'd kill off Gwen.

They'd eventually get together in the fourth.

Although Amazing Spiderman didn't grab me as much on an emotional level as Spiderman 1 and 2 did, I still thought it was cooler. If that makes any sense. I wasn't really rooting for Garfield like I was for Maguire when the goblin was beating him into a pulp at the end of Spiderman 1, you know? That's the only thing I thought was missing from ASM, that pull at my emotions.

That being said, I'm still really stoked to see the next two ASM movies The death of Gwen Stacy is a bold move, and I think the right one. Not sure about Shailene Woodley, though.

@Pwok21: If they're going to kill off Gwen in the third film then they have to give MJ a bit more than the cameo in the second film to at least establish be relationship with peter a bit before they're together. Otherwise it makes it seem like they're just introducing Mary Jane to replace gwen or just killing gwen off because Mary Jane is more well known/popular. At least it would seem this way to movie goers who don't know the story of peter. gwen and mj from the comics.

She doesn't need a huge part, but she should at least have some kind of meaningful interaction with Peter and Gwen to give some bearing to her larger roles in the next to films aside from rebound girl/more popular replacement.

They are just following the formula set up by Star Wars. 1st movie=unlikely hero is born and saves the day, 2nd movie: Hero struggles with responsibility and bad guys win, 3rd movie: Hero embraces his role and saves the day again. Im hoping for Sinister 6 in the 2nd one, but I know thats a pipe dream.

I haven't seen much from Shailene Woodley, but she doesn't really look like a party girl........

that's why these studios need to start casting age appropriate actors for the roles....they shouldn't be casting 30 year olds as high school characters

Since it reads like the Death of Gwen Stacy is the third movie, I'd speculate that Osborn will play a role in the second but doubt the Green Goblin will be the main villain (I could be wrong though). My guess is Osborn will continue to be the man behind the man and towards the end of the movie show his true colors. I'd actually like to see Kraven as the main villain. Dont really care if it fits with comicbook continuity. I'd just like to see a big screen urban adaptation of Kraven.

Eh, they should just have Redhead Emma Stone play Mary Jane and blonde Emma Stone play Gwen Stacey. I'd be okay with that.

I'm sure that Gwen will die in the 3rd movie so that MJ can comfort Peter and they will end up together. Shes not going to die in the 2nd. And Electro will br in the 2nd, not the Goblin.

I like that they are going to be bringing in the Death of Gwen Stacey story, and than bringing in Mary Jane. I hope they do these stories well. Shailene Woodly is a pretty good actress. I think she can hold her own as MJ

I think Norman Osborn should be a behind the scenes villain until the 3rd movie. Go ahead and introduce MJ in the second film for a classic love triangle. The villain in the 2nd movie should be the Jackal. Have Peter and Gwen in college and Miles has a crush on Gwen but she doesn't reciprocate because of Peter. So he gets DNA samples of Gwen and he clones her for a clone for himself. The shadowy figure from the end of the first movie (probably Norman) confronts Miles for help to get to Peter and the knowledge of Peter being bitten by the spider and being Spider-Man and he wants Spider-Man for himself (like in the Ultimate universe). An experiment goes wrong turning Miles into the Jackal. Later in the movie Jackal gets a sample of blood of Peter from an earlier fight and keeps it. Later, SM and Jackal fight and Jackal dies. Movie ends with the shadowy figure (Norman) finding the sample of Peter's blood in Miles's lab. End credit scene shows a naked man looking like Peter on a bed and the eyes open and the scene ends. Yes the clone is going to be Ben Reilly but be Norman's creation from using Miles's research. Then in the 3rd movie have Norman become Green Goblin and use the clone to get to Peter, MJ and Gwen and the final scene will have the classic Gwen Stacy death. Idk what MJ's, Ben Reilly's or Gwen's clone will be. I know my idea is out of place of the comics but why see the same thing again and again? I like different takes on things.

Honestly. I would kind of want Gwen Stacey to die in the second movie just because it'd be a big shock for it to happen so soon. Then we could have the third movie of Peter coping with her death and eventually getting together with MJ.

i'm glad they are bring mj into the sequel. give me good villian with a great story and character development and its just might be better than the sequel.

Come on, Death of Gwen Stacy. That's an arc I've been dying to see since her character was announced to be in the first one.

This MJ thing is making that a reality :)

Then have her support Peter after Gwen's death in the third film throughout the fourth film or something, and then bump them up to a relationship.

She does look a little young, However, she has the model look and you can add a year or two before she will make the appearance in the movie, so it looks to be a good decision. As Mary Jane was a model, she fills the part. I like Gwen Stacey, and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacey even more. The one thing I have loved this spider-man go around is that the casting seems to be very good this time. All right, I felt the first movie was passable, and could lead to better things. Even if it has to lead to sad moments, give me good stories.

@davelecave: I googled images of her, and for being a child star, many are from when she was very young, but I could tell the from more current ones she would make a good fit for MJ in a year or two.

Woodley will do a good job, after seeing her stellar performance in The Descendants, I have complete faith.

@Pwok21: Yes but in movies you have less time than in the comics and there's no guarantee that they'll make it past 4 movies or even 3, so if they're going to have her do something they have to do it more quickly meaning that in 3 films they'll have to establish her, build her relationships with peter and gwen, build peter and gwen's relationship with each other more, kill gwen, and bring in Mary Jane in a way that doesn't feel forced. They can't do that if they waste too much time with her in the background away from the Peter and Gwen, and they can't rely on later films to expand on it cause there's no guarantee that those films will even come to fruition.

I feel like the first set of films had the right idea by not bringing in Gwen until the final film because they knew they would never really have to deal with Peter having to make a transition between love interests. I love Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and it's going to suck if they are planning on removing her from the story within a film or two.
