Ghost Rider was created as a gimmick character. That is obvious to me now after reading his first few adventures. It is like they amalgamated the popularity of Silver Surfer The Exorcist and Easy Rider. I would have to check the timeline, for the exorcist, but you get my drift. They came up with the concept way before they had a handle on the character.

These days we think of the Ghost Rider as almost a separate character from Johnny Blaze, yet in the first two issues he is very much the same guy only with a flaming skull. This is very clear in the opening of both the last issue and this one, where because they are on Motorcycles, there has to be a motorcycle race.

So the first thing we see Ghost rider do here is turn tail and run when being chased by three bikers. This is bookended by a chase through the stunt shows obstacles later in the book. A far more ridiculous chase considering one of the bikers is riding one handed with a hundred and twenty pounds of woman squirming in the other arm. I am pretty sure you try to loop the loop in that condition you are going to wind up with your bike on top of you.

Getting past the motorcycle aspect, you still deal with the satanism. I have to admit, I love it. I am not a satanist, and think it is rather silly, but holy shit am I tired of the pussification of America these days. If you released these books today, the news would be all over it about the negative influences on our children.Instead they don't dance around it here, as much as they dance with it. It becomes heavy handed, but still seems silly at the same time.

The twist at the end is hardly a dramatic one as we have not had time to understand how much weight each character has gained in the others lives. Still it is interesting to say the least. However, it does lead to the question, "If satan wants Johnny Blazes soul, why let him keep the power of the Ghost rider?
