Too Overloaded For Its Own Good
After the fun and goofy AvX Babies issue, I was ready for this issue to be loads of fun. However, instead of the clever art and ideas of Skottie Young taking over the page, he only book ends the experience, with the middle consisting of a number of skits that hit or miss (mostly miss for me), and generally prolong me seeing Skottie once again. With the cover more or less promoting him, I felt somewhat cheated out of another over-the-top fun issue.
However, this issue isn't all bad, as there are some clever ideas presented, namely some of the parodying in Marvelpocalypse Now!, the silliness of Ladies Who Brunch, and the concept behind Intervention, as well as, if you haven't already guessed, Skottie's contributions. This very much feels like the Marvel talent show, except publicly presented; this issue is more or less a chance for a variety of writers and artists to present a few small skits for all to see, except there isn't a chance to vote for who you liked most at the end. And, as interesting a concept as this is, just like in high school, most of the participants aren't very good, and only a few earnestly shine.
This issue is very misleading in some ways, but, if this concept seems really cool or clever to you, feel free to pick this one up, as who knows how long it will be until another appears in the distant future. However, perhaps with Skottie on board we'll be seeing it more frequently than one would expect.
