Introduction

Stephen Strange was originally a brilliant yet arrogant neurosurgeon until one day he suffered a nearly fatal car accident that left his hands crippled and unable to perform surgery. After conventional medicine and treatments failed to cure his hands Strange embarked in a search that led him to the Ancient One and was introduced to a new world of magic. He became a student of the Ancient One, mastering the Mystic Arts and now serves as one of Earth's protectors against extradimensional forces that threaten reality.

Spells and Magic

The MCU's debut of sorcery shifts away from the invocation and patron based magic of the comic source material in favor of the harnessing of mystical energies from other dimensions in order to achieve a variety of effects including, but not limited to, the formation of mystic weapons, shields, and even channeling the energy into their bodies to overcome physical disabilities. Due to his photographic memory and latent talent for sorcery, Strange learns the Mystic Arts at a rate faster than any student prior, being granted access to spell books reserved for masters.and even managing to master spells from tomes stated too advanced but the Ancient One herself.

While trapped in a time loop in his battle against Dormammu for an indefinite amount of time, Strange would gain even further mastery of his powers. In fact, Strange's prowess is such that even the Ancient One stated he's destined to surpass every sorcerer that came before him, and since Infinity War, he's been intentionally made to be one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most powerful characters.

Eldritch Weapons:

• Can form a whip made of mystical energy - (DS)
  • Tosses a vase at a Zealot using the whip - (DS)
  • Smacks and knocks out a zealot several feet away - (DS)
  • Pulls Ebony Maw and send him flying towards himself - (IW)
  • Able to restrain Thanos with dozens of these wips when duplicated - (IW)
• Forms a sword to battle alongside Drax against Thanos - (IW)

  • Shields from a sustained energy blast from Dormammu for an extended period - (DS)

Portals:

Strange utilizes a Sling Ring which is used by practitioners of the mystic arts to create portals anywhere in the multiverse they can visualize.

  • Using a strand of Thor's hair, Strange creates a portal to Odin's location - (TR)
  • Sends Bruce Banner away to safety in a nearby park and inadvertently bisects a car - (IW)
  • Creates massive portals across Earth and several locations in space, possibly with aid/coordination from other mystics, to unite all the resurrected heroes for the final battle against Thanos - (EG)

  • Sends an existing portal forward at a charging Loki and BFRs him - (TR)
  • Uses portals alongside Wong to redirect projectiles back at Ebony Maw - (IW)
  • Creates a series of portals for Spider-Man to leap through and beat on Thanos - (IW)

• Transmutes a black hole-like vortex created by Thanos with the Space Stone into a swarm of butterflies - (IW)

Astral Form:

• Dr. Strange can enter an ethereal state known as the Astral Form - (DS)
• Uses the mirror dimensions as a medium for his Astral form to be visibly seen by someone - (DS)
• Phases his arm into his chest while surgery is being performed on him in order to illuminates his internals near the wound - (DS)
• Time moves far slower in this state to the point where lightning is perceived in slow motion- (DS)
• Is able to resist having his soul pushed out of his body by Thanos wielding the Soul Stone due to Strange's control over his astral form, though it left him briefly stunned - (IW / Script)

• Strange is shown able to teleport objects, himself, and others on the property of his Sanctum Sanctorum

Mystic Gear and Artifacts

Cloak of Levitation

The Cloak of Levitation acts in much the same way as its original comic counterpart, granting the power of flight/levitation when worn and responding to the commands of the wearer's thoughts. This incarnation of the cloak possesses its own will as it can act and move independently on its own accord. The Cloak chose Doctor Strange to be its bearer and will often protect Strange from dangers while in combat. It's also sentient and aware of its surrounding, even being able to direct Strange to things of interest in the environment.

Flight/Levitation:

• Slows Strange's descent from a great fall - (DS)
• Flies into the sky and into the rift to the Dark Dimension - (DS)
• Flies Strange's unconscious body through a city at high speeds while evading Ebony Maw before eventually being caught - (IW)

Defense/Protection:

• Prevents Strange from being stabbed multiple times - (DS)
• Pulls Strange across the room before he can be slashed - (DS)
• Pulls Strange out of the way of being slashed again - (DS)
• Smacks Kaecilius back before he can strike Strange - (DS)
• While Strange was injured and dying, the Cloak wraps itself around Strange's attacker and savagely bangs their head on the floor - (DS)
• Catches Kaecilius fist in an attempted sneak attack while Strange's back is turned - (DS)
• Frees Dr. Strange from Ebony Maw's restraints and attempts to fly away Strange's unconscious body to safety - (IW)
• Blitzes Drax and coils around his head incapacitating him, him being unable to tear it off - (IW)
  • Note: Drax is capable of tearing a metal turret drone in half with his bare hands - (GotG)

• Wraps around and restrains Thanos' Infinity Gauntlet who struggles to tear it off but eventually does after a time - (IW)

Other:

• Can either repair itself or Strange has some means to do so as it's torn by Thanos from his arm, but it's shown fully repaired some time after - (IW)

Eye of Agamotto

The Eye of Agamotto is a powerful mystic artifact created by the original Sorcerer Supreme and father of the Mystic Arts, the mighty Agamotto. One massive deviation from the comics this incarnation of the Eye has is that it possesses one of the six Infinity Stones, the Time Stone. Using the ability of sorcerers to channel and manipulate arcane energies, Doctor Strange can use the energies of the Eye to manipulate time in a myriad of ways.

Time Manipulation:

• Shifts between different states of time on an apple - (DS)
• Reverses time on a spell book to read its missing pages - (DS)
• Freezes time then reverses it in order to undo the destruction in a city - (DS)
  • When the time reversal spell gets momentarily disrupted after Strange is temporarily unconscious, time freezes again - (DS)
• Can spare others the effects of the Eye's time manipulation (1, 2) - (DS)
• Creates a time loop that undoes every moment Dormammu kills him - (DS)
• Reverses time to undo the rift between Earth and the Dark Dimension - (DS)
• Uses the Eye to view all 14,000,605 of the possible outcomes of the upcoming conflict between the Avengers and Thanos and finds the one instance in which they win - (IW)

Limitations:

• Use of the Eye risks breaking time's natural flow and can potentially cause disastrous temporal effects - (DS)
• Ebony Maw stops Strange from utilizing the eye by restraining his arms and preventing him from performing the proper gestures - (IW)

Other Relics:

The New York Sanctum isn't just a focal point in maintaining the mystic shields that protects earth, it's also been used by the Masters of the Mystic Arts to secure a large collection of magic artifacts from those who would abuse it. As the current Master of the New York Sanctum, Strange has access to these mystic items and will often utilize them towards his objective.

• Dark Scepter:A magic staff stated to be capable of absorbing both the light of the environment and within oneself
  • A sorceresses had used it to briefly absorb the light of part of a city and later to defeat Kaecilius by forcing him to black out
  • When imbued with energy, is capable of striking someone hard enough to send someone flying in the air
• Crimson Bands of Cyttorak: An enchanted device Strange used against Kaecilius to bind and restrain him
• Rotunda of Gateways: A trio of portals with gateways that can shift between various locations across Earth
• Scrying Mirror: Used to view events from different location

Physical Abilities

In addition to learning the Mystic Arts, Strange was instructed in the martial arts as well by the Ancient One and Mordo so that he may be prepared for any danger that threatens his reality. Strange has also demonstrated an impressive degree of endurance and willpower.

Reaction Speed:

• Deflects a Space Shard thrown at him by Kaecilius - (DS)
• Blocks a surprise assault by Mordo during training - (DS)
• Matrix dodges metal debris flying towards him with the help of his Cloak - (DS)
• Dodges a speeding car in reverse - (DS)
• Blocks a sudden barrage of sharp projectiles fired by Dormammu in all directions - (DS)
• Blocks multiple energy blasts from Dormammu - (DS)
• Creates a portal to redirect Ebony Maw's projectiles - (IW)
• Blocks daggers tossed at him by Drax - (IW)
• Erects a Mirror Dimension gateway to block an energy blast from the Power Stone just before hitting him - (IW)

Durability/Endurance:

• Immediately gets up after being hit with part of the explosion that destroyed the London Sanctum and is sent flying several feet away - (DS)
• Gets kicked and shoved several times in a row into glass display cases by Kaecilius - (DS)
• Manages to focus enough to cast a portal despite having been critically wounded - (DS)
• Endures being continuously killed in a time loop by Dormammu - (DS)
  • The director stated he died potentially thousands of times
  • One of the writers confirm he was trapped long enough to practice and advance his powers even more
• Endures Ebony Maw's torture for an extended period (1, 2) - (IW)
• Shrugs off an explosive that also sent Spider-Man and Iron Man flying - (IW)
• Has Spider-Man tossed into him by Thanos with enough force to seemingly take them both out - (IW)

Granted he was still just an apprentice in the movie but here's hoping he gets into more solid magic later on and not be so weapon focused. The cup scenario with Thor is a good start but it's just that there's so many spells and the creativity it can bring is immense, so do we really need sorcerers fighting with whips and disc shields so much?

Wow so strange has some sort of reality alteration considering what he did with thors mug in the end credits scene? Interesting

@wastelandman: I know, such as his first attempt at casting the shields, one failed. But if you look at the Ancient One, even she seemed to use magic of the same type (though better than everyone else). Perhaps she simply held back, using only what she felt necessary or maybe her power had grown weaker (this part wasn't explored much despite the subject of her age being brought up). But it seemed a bit odd.

Overall I liked it but I can see why she had issues with it. I just went in with the understanding that this would be a different universe's version with a different take. And honestly it wasn't any more off than several of the alternate versions of him. I went it with reserved expectations and little demands and thought it did enough of the things that were personally important.

Yeah, judging by the amount of books he read in the movie it's expected and implied he'd know more spells than shown in the movie. Just not necessarily combat magic, and he definitely didn't get much in the way of opportunity to work on that aspect before being thrust into the conflict. Still think Derrickson could have done better with that (besides the world bending stuff which was cool). Plus it'd naturally make sense that he'd focus on further expanding his magic after the main events of the movie.

That last Gif alone is worth the read.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Strange "transmutate" a black hole Thanos threw at him? It looked like a black hole to me but I'm not sure. And do you remember when Strange restrained Thanos and tried to take off the Infinity Gauntlet? That spell reminded me of Crimson Bands of Cyttorak. I know it didn't completely look like them, but they were red and he used them to restrain Thanos.

I don't know if it classifies as a black hole but it was definitely a vortex of some kind that was warping space around it (which makes sense since it was created by the space stone). Those metallic restraints he summoned reminded me of the Crimson Bands too but the Artbook listed the artifact he used to restrain Kaecilius as the Crimson Bands which is pretty lame but this could be a cool retcon.

It looked like it had the event horizon, so it might actually be a black hole. I don't know. I'll watch the movie again this weekend so I'll try to pay more attention to that part. Regardless, transmutating a hole in space is impressive even if it's not a black hole.

Yeah, I saw that too and it was pretty stupid. The artifact looked kinda goofy IMO and it wasn't crimson at all.
