Surtur is technically a "planet buster", but I don't know if anyone realized how small Asgard actually was. There is a short scene when Thor comes out of the Devil's Anus in the Grandmaster's ship, and it shows all of Asgard as seen from space. It's just the one small city, with a small body of water surrounding it. Call it maybe 40 square miles, and maybe a mile or two thick (the planet is flat, not round).

Here's an artist's rendition that is not taken from the movie, but it seems pretty comparable based on my memory of the scene:

So could Surtur actually destroy a city the size of something like New York, knowing that Asgard is actually a planet much smaller then most major cities?

@tparks: where are you getting your information?

In Thor two it showed numerous mountain ranges, in Ragnarok on it showed whole other cites

But on topic this is an incredibly pointless question, to destroy a landmass that large would mean an extinction level event if it happened on earth

I don't think people realise how much power you need to generate the force to destroy land masses

Over 1 million nukes wouldn't be able to do that even if they simultaneously exploded

@tparks: Even if this were true, Asgard is definitely harder to destroy than a city. More firepower, better defenses, and extremely powerful denizens. What is New York gonna do about Surtur? Call the cops?

I wouldn't consider this small. Mountains and water spread out as far as the eye can see in this scene:

There's a view of the planet from space in Ragnarok. It's the one city surrounding the palace, and water surrounding that, and that's it. No other cities. The mountains aren't adding much and seem to be built into the city.

Lol. I know that. I'm not talking about if New York would win a battle with him, only if Surtur could destroy it by plunging his sword into it.

We see the edge of the water though in Ragnarok. It's not very far out from the city. Maybe a 1-2 miles, maybe a little more. It's surprisingly small.

I honestly think multiple Asgards could fit inside New York City. Like upwards of 10.

@tparks: false New York would look like a spec in space while Asgard is visible by eye even from a distance. Asgard is bigger that most mega city’s considering it has multiple small towns, rivers, lakes, giant mountain ranges.

@comickidd77: I don't know what to say other then to watch for the scene in the movie. And when has Asgard been viewed from space? The scene in the movie had us viewing Asgard from space, but it's not like it was from thousands of miles away, only a few miles away.

@wastelandman: What makes you say that though? We get to see the entire planet of Asgard in Ragnarok in a single shot. And we got to see how close the edge of the water is from the land in the movie too. It wasn't very far. Even if it's more then 2 miles, the entire planet is still much smaller then a city like New York City.

And the video you posted doesn't show any distance more then maybe half a mile of water at best. Although it doesn't show the edge in that video, like we get to see in Ragnarok.

Asgard seemed to be like a super city if not small country in size. He vaporized it not just destroyed it.He might be able to destroy a large portion of the Earth's surface with his power.

I've walked about 2 miles regularly and I know with absolute certainty that there's no way what was shown in the video stretches anywhere close to 2 miles.

We get to see the entire planet of Asgard in Ragnarok in a single shot. And we got to see how close the edge of the water is from the land in the movie too. It wasn't very far. Even if it's more then 2 miles, it's still much smaller then a city like New York City.

I see people speculate the size of MCU Asgard and it varies wildly. There really isn't any point unless we get confirmation in like a guidebook or something.

@wastelandman: Heimdall's Observatory sits on the very edge of the planet. It looks like about 2 miles to the city in every scene they show.

    No Caption Provided

Maybe a little more. But you shouldn't need an official source book to know that the planet is extremely small. And with aerial views of the city showing it as very small for a city, and now in Ragnarok, a shot of the entire planet itself (even though it seems like everyone missed that scene but me lol), you get to see the entirety of it, and it's not big enough to really need any more then rough estimation to compare to a real life city, for the purposes of a thread like this at least.

It's definitely below los Angeles size.

If we scale by comparing the palace height and radius of of asgard.

A nuke can't be compared to Surtur's strike. Radiation is mostly what would kill people.

That said, Surtur could roughly obliterate a large island. Wipe it off the face of the earth and leave a crater at the bottom of the ocean in his wake. Even without that, he could walk around swinging his sword and probably wreck a city in an hour or even less given his massive size.

The scene where Thor comes back to Asgard and confront the Loki disguised as Odin, Thor did called a Asgardian guard out to take the Head of Surtur and lock it at the Vault. He did mentioned that Surtur could destroy a planet. So Surtur is a planet destroyer and Asgard is recognized a small planet.

Asgard is about the size of the main part of a city, the outskirts, suburb like areas make cities larger

but he absolutely destroyed Asgard, so the explosion would extend to a full cities worth
