    Martian Manhunter

Character » Martian Manhunter appears in 3582 issues.

Sole survivor of the Martian people, J'onn J'onzz was teleported to Earth decades ago by Dr. Saul Erdel. Since then, he has adopted Earth as his new home, playing many roles over his time with humanity: detective, secret agent, explorer, and even a founding member of the Justice League.

Is MM the strongest character on DC Earth (New 52)?

    cause he seems pretty unbeatable

His fire weakness doesn't seem to be as crippling. Not even sure if it still exists.

His telepathy is very powerful. He can seemingly listen to everyone on earth and shows up whenever someone thinks about him or talks about him. He even appeared on Oa in the Green Lantern Corps to help the Green Lanterns. Than erased there memories.

Holds his own against the Justice League Big 7.

    spoiler:

Justice League #20 Martian Manhunter takes Despero on one on one and owns him. He matches him physically and than breaks his mind with his psychic powers

My guess is Captain Atom is still the most powerful. On the magic side, Spectre is probably still the most powerful.

Seeing how he's Superman with telekinesis, telepathy, and shape-shifting, he should be, but writers will always underplay his strengths.

    Agreed.

Though have made MM to be very powerful, Taking on a team buster in Despero. He is definatley more powerful than Superman IMO.

Jonn seems to have all of Superman's powers plus mental powers, chameleon power, invisibility, density changing like Vision, so Jonn should be able to beat Superman. But I am not sure if Jonn can beat Wonder Woman since WW has better fighting skills.

    1. I just said that.

    2. Superman can beat Wonder Woman, so theoretically he should be able to beat Wonder Woman too.

wait your saying hypothetically MM should beat Superman without Kryptonite or magic, but he can't take WW?

Superman will always be the strongest. It's just a fact of DC Comics life. If it came down to it, Superman would defeat the Martian Manhunter. Personally, I think J'onn beating Despero like that was PIS. I do like his characterization so far in the DCNU though. However, I do miss the pre-52 Manhunter who was powerful, but had a huge heart as well as the love and admiration of all of his friends and peers. I miss the J'onn who was "the heart of the league," and couldn't eat enough chocos....

Its been a trend for years. Some writers (looking at you Geoff) think that a character has to be deadly serious and somehow twisted or damaged to be taken seriously. That certainly isn't the case....

Sorry I should fix that: MM wont get an ongoing because DC can't decided what to do with characters that powerful. I mean look at Captain Atom.

But Captain Atom got an ongoing? It just got cancelled due to low sales. And Matt Kindt has said to be interested of writing a MM ongoing and there's a good chance of it happening after Trinity War.

Yea the reason it had low sales is because DC didn't promote it and the writers didn't know what to do with him

@onemoreposter: Agreed, especially the last part about being serious/twisted.

I like his new design & being a bit more bad-ass, but overall N52 has ruined MM IMO. Especially with JLoA #4 back-up where apparently now John's fire weakness is unique to him, because he witnesses his whole world ablaze and felt guilty for not being there to save it.........WTF?! Sure, let's just re-write the whole history of the martian race. I'm hoping it's revealed the whole new 52 is a giant Elseworlds.

That's actually not something new. For a long time the fire weakness was a psychological problem that applied only to him because he saw his family burn to death. It was only later retconned

(well that sort of makes my spoilers for-naught :p lol). Was that pre-crisis? (If so, that makes sense that Johns would resurrect something pre-crisis). I don't think there's many changes made post-crisis that people wish were undone**. John's history as described in his late 90's title was perfect IMO.

**(although personally I like that Silver Age brainiac was a machine, because it's closer to DCAU Brainiac & DCAU was what introduced me to super-heroes).

@dernman: @lightsout: Actually isn't implied that fire is a weakness, because after all he was able to get in while the planet Mars and the atmosphere was on fire and wasn't affected, without saying that he declared himself invulnerable against fire and then questioned why the fire was able to hurt him in that moment. It's possible to be a psychic weakness again or Shaggy Man has been modified to be able to hurt him, after all the Secret Society knew that the JLA, was behind chase them. As they watch the heroes for years, it is expected to have some form of counter attack and the contingency plans

@matchesmalone21: Well I would say it's always (at least new 52 & pre-52 since his solo series (I don't know older than that)) been psychological, not that he's physically harmed by it (well, he is, but only after the psychological effect causes him to not be able to alter his physiology to resist the damaging effects of it). So new52 is saying that after he was down on the planet, it planted some sort of psychological seed that makes him now weak to it (which I do not care for, compared to the old reason that the whole race had it planted in them in their early days to prevent them from being too powerful).

I hate how absurdly powerful Martian Manhunter is for absolutely no reason other than he's not human and writers could give him any powers they want by just saying "It's 'cus he's an alien." He's like a 5 year old's wish fulfillment. "I'm a 7 foot muscular alien with advanced intelligence, Superman-level strength, super speed, super stamina, invulnerability, rapid healing, longevity, flight, heat vision, x-ray vision, ice breath, sonic scream, telepathy, psionic blasts, telekinesis, shapeshifting, intangibility, invisibility, and 9 senses."

There's also the implication that ALL martians have the same innate abilities as he does. How were they wiped out?

He should just have telepathy, shapeshifting, intangibility, and flight. He could have a limited form of super-strength and endurance depending on his transformations. He could also perhaps have a form of invisibility, either as a chameleon camouflage-type ability utilizing his shapeshifting, or perhaps as a telepathic trick so others just aren't able to perceive him.

@deadpool: I've always thought of his array of powers being due to his shape-shifting; he can 'copy' the powers of many races, Kryptonians included. I rather like him as a thinking man's Superman.

I've thought of his intangibility, invisibility/camouflage, flight, and stretching, and shapeshifting to be related to his telepathy since martians are able to mentally control their bodies. I could also see him having low-level superhuman strength in part to his shapeshifting by adding some mass and controlling his musculature he could gain bestial strength... but closer to someone like Hawkman, not Superman, which actually seems to be his normal martian strength.

But if what you're saying is true, then he has another hax superpower.

    A "thinking man's Superman"?

They got wiped out because there was a virus specifically made to wipe them out.

    Isn't that the new story?

There's also still the problem of how absurdly powerful he is.
