In the year 2016, a Category II Kaiju codenamed "Onibaba" attacked Tokyo and killed thousands of civilians. A young Mako watched as her entire family disappeared in the blink of an eye. The Kaiju pursued her down the deserted streets of the city until Coyote Tango, a Jaeger captained by Stacker Pentecost and Tamsin Sevier, arrived on the scene and slew the monster in a brutal battle. In the aftermath of the creature's defeat, Stacker found Mako and adopted her as his own daughter, since she had no family left and no one to look after her.
