More man vs. robot action! And a nice jump in the story!

Magnus is still on the run from the sentient robot forces controlled by, The Synod! Click the link, for the last review I did for this series!

Magnus Robot Fighter continues to impress me! Each month, I am immersed in a complex world that has robots fighting for total control over the world; and seeking the complete eradication of the human species. Writer Fred Van Lente, with this fourth issue, throws another story changing curve ball by introducing Magnus' wife, Moira. Whom he [presumedly] thought was long dead. Things will certainly heat up with this big reveal, and why she doesn't necessarily remember him!

What writer Fred Van Lente did right with this issue was, building on the momentum of issue 3's story. There was a beautiful introduction to this robot city in last issue; and also its sheriff, Leeja. To summarize last issue, lots of destruction and punching; topped with an excellent story that lightly touched on the dark side behind the Synod! Lente continued down that path with this issue, with having Magnus battle the Swarm and introducing a [human] rebellion group that is looking to take down Synod and the Singularity once and for all.

From that continuation of focusing on the dark side of the Synod, I absolutely enjoyed how Fred Van Lente handled it. He established more of the robot aspect of the world, and introduced The Swarm. It was cool to see Magnus battle it, and eventually use a new power, but I really enjoyed how other characters [like Leeja] touched on how stupid it was, to unleash a weapon like that in a populated area. Having characters, like Leeja, start to question as to whether or not what she is doing is ethical or not; is an excellent job done, on Lente's part. Just through a couple of pages, he shows that his characters aren't 2-dimensional [or linear], but instead something more! I like seeing character development like this so early in a series, because it allows me to question [and assume] what will happen in later issues. Another job well done on Fred Van Lente's part!

The artwork by Cory Smith is awesome! He does a good job with making the robots characters, look, as alive as the human characters. The colors by Mauricio Wallace puts the finish on Smith's artwork. The really bright city lights, any scene where Magnus is punching The Swarm, and the Swarm itself; are all the highlights of Wallace's amazing colors. It was an excellent job done by the art team!

Overall, this series still shows a lot of promise! I'm interested in seeing what will happen next, and what secrets Magnus will find out! 5 out of 5, until the next one!
